Who The Heck Ordered 57(!) Airbus'

Tue Jun 01, 1999 12:48 am

Today Airbus Ind. announced they have recieved an order of 57 Airbus.
The Company which ordered remains a secret until the Aero Salon at LeBourget starting at 13.June!
Who do you guess ordered?!
I' d say it was Northwest. I know they always say they'll fly their (antique?) DC9 fleet into the next Century...but do you believe this is economical?!
I do not!

My guesses would be as follows:

> Northwest for A319s to replace their DC-9s (I agree with you),
> US Airways may have converted some of their options on additional A319s and A320s to help speed their route expansion, or
> United for A319s and A320s to expand their fleet and build up IAD

Are we sure it's not New Air? That's the JFK based start-up (soon, not yet) who are buying a big fleet of A320s. They may have already made a formal announcement. It's going to be a low-cost airline using the SWA template. "New Air" may not be the operating name (it started out as just a working title) but it seems to be sticking. They are apparently the highest-capitalised start up since the deregulation - they've got BILLIONS and even if they never make a profit, we should be hearing a lot about them in the coming years. Who said a big domestic carrier could never launch with enough critical mass to take on the majors after all those mergers? If New Air haven't formally announced their order, then my guess is the 57 planes are for them.

I am guessing its Alitalia. Can't be New Air since there is already an Airbus news release on that order. I am also guessing its one airline.

I'm with you, A330. It seems likely that ILFC, or another leasing company, is the purchaser. There are many, many, world airlines that can't afford to buy planes outright so they lease. Makes sense to me.

Airbus Order

Tue Jun 01, 1999 7:32 pm

I agree to some of the messages posted here, Northwest or ILFC are the possible customers.
An argument for Northwest is that they only have four or five A320s left on order, which seems to be quite less, as they are very satisfied with the type. So I could imagine that they ordered some more A320s. A319s are already on order but there could also be an update. And Northwest has always been interested in the A318, which could replace several DC-9s.
ILFC is possible too, to lease the aircraft to many different carriers.
New Air doesn't seem to be the carrier, as I don't think that they will start up with three different aircraft sizes (A320, A319, A318). As a low cost carrier they will concentrate on one size only.

Nevertheless I can't wait till Airbus comes out with the customer!

I agree, it would most likely be a leasing company rather then an airline. But if it was an airline, I would guess Alitalia too......going into new partnerships, Alitalia has an ageing fleet. European routes are mostly flown by Md-80s with a few Airbus A321, so I think Alitalia is a good guess.

Air France ?

Wed Jun 02, 1999 5:18 am

Air France has big projects in CDG, so why not ?

It could be 20 A330, 30 A320, 7 A340 ?

Ansett? Hhmmmmm

Wed Jun 02, 1999 5:49 am

If the order is 57 aircrafts, I don't think it's Ansett because they will order 35 Airbuses.
10 A320's to replace its 767's and 25 A318's and A319's to replace 737's and Bae 146's.

I really hope it was NWA or another airline. Not a leasing company. How boring!

Well I Know Who It Ain't

It wasn't me, Really!, I know you have heard rumors but I assure you I have not ordered these aircraft......After some confering I can also say that It was not the Alamo, The USS Roosevelt, My PEPSI can, Chris Dudly or Latrell Spreewell or my Colgate tooth paste either. I hope eliminating these helps narrow it down.

Everyone forgot TWA. TWA does have options on Airbus aircraft. Also, they are planning a major expansion. Refer to the "TWA's Death Wish" post for further info.

I would like to say it was Canadian Airlines, but realistically, Lance's Colgate tube is a surer bet :-)
