Which Airports Have The Best Takeoffs?

Thu Jun 21, 2001 2:09 pm

I have already asked a similar "?" to this one. My personal one is the takeoff at Santa Ana, CA (steep, then engineless). I would also like to experience the takeoff from 17L (am I correct?). What are your favorites?

MIA has a nice right over Miami Beach and alongside downtown Miami. ATH is another nice one. The best, IMO, of the ones I've been to is that of MPB.

SNA is the best takeoff in the world. The left side of the plane on takeoff from HNL is a great sight.

yeah, I like the Miami takeoffs also. You could be sitting downtown at Bayside or in one of the parks and a 747 will look like it is just grazing the buildings.

Jackson Hole Wyoming in a jet. Because you're heading toward a mountain on takeoff, they have to turn immediately after takeoff. It's amazing.

I agree, LGA. Manhattan is an amazing sight. GEG (Spokane) was really pretty too with all the mountains around.

I agree with LGA and SNA. But I have an Insider Tip >>>THF (Berlin-Tempelhof) this Airport is located in the Heart of Berlin. Check it out !!!

Greetings from Germany

I think it is Seattle. The scenery is beautiful with all the mountains and the city.

Definitely SFO, especially if you get to see both bridges (Golden Gate and Oakland Bay) at the same time headed north or northwest. Alcatraz from up in the air looks awesome too.

Santa Ana is always a good one.....a 30 degree angle of climb or higher and a last view of Newport Beach/Pier before banking to the left to head east. DEN also has good take-offs.

Myrtal Beach was an exciting one; it was a while and I don't remember exact RWY direction, it was east to toward the Ocean, and once across the watter, the aircraft made 180 degree turn in climb. It was excellent.

Chicago Midway is allways exciting in ATA's 757!

JFK during international Rush hour. Its like a drug. You will never see a concentration of different airlines and aircraft on the ground at once.

KUGN,

What is so exciting about ATA's 757 takeoff from Midway? I am not trying to be funny, it's just that I've flown them 3 times this year to LGA and I really didn't see anything special about it. Unless you are talking about the plane leveling off temporarily immediately right after the steep initial climb (when the engines all of a sudden become silent) and then resumes its climb again a few minutes later.

Cuz I wanna know what I'm missing!!!  Smile

I've only seen a couple pictures of this, but when there was an opposite wind at Kai Tak where the jets had to take off towards the checkerboard and mountains over the city instead of the usual take off over the bay. I think this is the most impressive take off of all.

Another impressive take off is the one from St. Martin Princess Julianna. You get sandblasted on the beach by 747s trying to get on full power to make that takeoff over the mountains. I seen a video of a Convair 440 take off and it had to turn left instead of right because it couldn't get the height it needed to get over the mountains that the jets usually do.

Trickijedi, I might be wrong, but for me ATA's 757 steep takeoff in sunset, with eastbound turn was very exciting. It is short runway, and the city lights are immediately all around. I also find 757's takeoffs impressive.

Granted, this might not be a big deal compared to other listed takeoffs. But its worth experiancing  Wink/being sarcastic

OK, that is what I thought you meant with the 757's. I agree they do have impressive take-offs. And shorter runways DO make them more exciting.

Any night departure over large cities (London,Paris,NYC,LAX,etc.) are great!Gee,I wish I had a monopoly on the sales of lightbulbs!  Smokin cool
All take-off's in the northern part of Norway are fabulous in nice weather, especially in winter with mountains very close to the runways and icy fjords with icefloes floating about.
If you have an engine failure on take-off from RWY 11 at ALF (ENAT),you have to perform a left hand turn immediately,at 50 feet RH,to clear the mountains!

MDW is fun, climb, level off and a hard right, but the most scenic one I've experienced is leaving CUN and turning left and following the hotel zone a mile or two off-shore.

Juneau, Alaska (JNU) on the southbound "sling-shot" take off. I went on this once in a 737-200 and want to do it again. The pilot changes the engine power many times and banks at what seems like the last second so as not to hit the cliff.

I like the takeoff from Oakland. The plane usually takes off in a northerly direction (forgot the runway number) and if you are flying to Southern California , the plane turns near the Bay Bridge and you get an amazing view of San Francisco, including the Embarcadero, Transamerica building, and often times you fly directly over SFO and can see the activity there. The takeoff is especially nice at night. SFO takeoffs are awesome too.

how about a west takeoff on a flight headed east from LAS at night. You takeoff and have to make a big right turn and wind up circling the vegas strip. It looks awesome how tiny all those lit up hotels look from the air.
