Hello I was wondering will America West ever get a wide body jet and start international service from PHX and LAS or are the doing that bad now that they cant afford a new plane now.

They tried that with 4 747s in the early 90s PHX-HNL-(OSA ?). I was a very bad choice for them. The Japan service was never even close to profitable and was quickle dropped. They were then stuck with 4 aircraft not suited to the route structure. I very much doubt they'll try that again.
BTW America West is an international airline. They operate a fair number of flights into seveal Mexican cities. I don't know about Canada. I think they operated into YYC and YEG at one time. I just can't dig up my timetables from 10-15 years ago easily.

At one time they had orders for 747-400s, 25 Airbus 300-600ERS and 25 767-300ERS. That was back in the late 80s and quickly got dropped. Ultimately some day they may have a small fleet of 767s or A300s.

America West never ordered the 767-300 nor any A300s. However, I own that very book which gave you that false information. "Modern Commercial Aircraft" was published in 1987 and shows America West ordering those aircraft. It was a misprint and those were actually orders for American Airlines. If you look carefully at American's orders, you'll find that their 767-300 and A300 orders are missing, even though they were truly on order for deliveries to begin in 1988. America West was, however, an unsuccessful operator of four 747-200s and even had four 747-400s on order prior to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1991.

They did operate some flights to London didn't they? Until 1991 right? I can't remember the airport that AmericaWest flew into though, Heathrow or Gatwick, but i did remember that i saw an advertisement on a bill board for a few months then, featuring their 747.

Don't forget PHX-YYZ, which will be switched to CMH-YYZ.

Yeah, America West began daily nonstop PHX-YYZ on October 31. I flew on the inaugural flight back to Phoenix and there was very little fanfare at YYZ. This fall, America West Express will begin 3x daily flights from Columbus to YYZ, replacing the one daily flight to Phoenix. Also this fall, America West will begin service to Raleigh/Durham from Phoenix...it's not yet officially announced, but trust me on this.

JMC1975:

Thanks for the clarification on what I said about HP ordering the 25 767-300s and Airbuses. You are right: My source is Modern Commercial Aviation. I have kept every piece of airliners crap I have ever gathered over the years because of the ever changing environment. Even back then I thought that was so whacko but the fact that they had the 747-200s and 4 747-400s on order I just believed the rest. I could never figure out what happened to those orders, I just assumed they got dumped in the early 90s reorganization. But now the truth comes out, a misprint and what a big one at that! At the time they had such an aggressive growth plan that it would seem plausible that they were that dumb to go for that type of order.  Smile

A few years ago, there was a big rumor that America West was going to purchase 14 or so A330 aircraft. It was discussed pretty heavily in this forum. This was in the late summer of 1999, so it obviously never happened. I personally do not see America West ordering any widebody jets in the near future. They tried about a decade ago, and it proved to be a complete failure. America West has found their niche as a low-fare, full service airline serving the United States, Canada, and Mexico. I would like to see the airline expand to more international destinations in Canada, Mexico, and possibly Central America and the Carribean, but it most likely will not happen for a long time. PHX-HNL would probably do well for America West as long as they operated a medium sized aircraft with the capability to fly the distance between the two cities nonstop.

A link the the topic concerning the possibility of America West A330's can be found at:
