Is It Just Me That Is Facinated By Overflights?

Tue Jul 03, 2001 5:43 am

Hi,
I was watching the overflights which where passing over my house this evening and just wondered, am I the only person who loves to watch overflights? Work out the airline/aircraft which will probably be something I dont see normally.

I live in phoenix and what I love is that I live just below an approach path for PHX and the aircraft are at 4-5000 ft. THis allows me to see numerous aircraft without going to the airport!!!
Even though i still love to g there too...

Well, as i live on the flight path from Heathrow and the rest of europe to the US of A i see upwards of 3 or 4 aircraft in the air at any one time. I like having a look at what type of aircraft and what airline it is, although it doesn't compete with actually being at an airport.

Being the quiet weirdo that i am i often wonder what is going on in the aircraft and where people are going and what for. Cool huh?

Sometimes i see aircraft approaching Filton low over my house, most of them A300's going in for Cargo conversion but also a while ago we had Concorde directly flying over the houses quite regularly.

I think our old house in Holland was good too. Noordwijk is directly on the flightpath for the main runway (Kaagbaan) and aircraft are visible over the houses and what airline etc (many NW DC-10's!) its alot of fun watching them.

One time while visiting old friends in Lisse, i was outside when i saw an aircraft approaching Schiphol. As it was directly above the houses the undercarriage was deployed and there was a very distinct hissing sound. Is this caused by the drag the undercarriage creates?

Regards, Dan

Hey,
No you are not the only one, i also do it!! I love watching them come over my house!! As i live on the Flight path to NZAA....Auckland, New Zealand for the people that dont know it.
It is really cool when i see them. I was just wondering, how can you tell how high they are??
I also wonder..What are those passengers doing, are the FA's still out of there seats or are they out of there seats after takeoff..etc...

Have a great day,
Mikey

I enjoy watching overflights too, but I don't do it lots and lots. Most of the aircraft I see are clearly not at full altitude and are usually Delta aircraft. I see all kinds, but usually MD88s, 727s, and 767s.

I also love to watch overflights, and the range of airliners flying at cruising altitude over my house (I live one hour northeast of Nuremberg, near the Czech border) is quite large. Most are CSA Czech Airlines (on the way to and from Prague) and Lufthansa, but there are also better ones, such as Qantas (I saw Wunala Dreaming once!), Singapore Airlines, Malaysia, PIA, Iran Air, Gulf Air and many others on the way to or from Asia/Gulf.
I have also seen many BA planes in new colours and it is still fun to find out the tail color!

Anyone ever been to EWR? That airport has runway 22 parallel to the New Jersey Turnpike. As you're on your way to New York at 75 miles an hour you see CO aircraft landing only 75 kts faster than you're going.

It's SO COOL to see the planes streak overhead through the moonroof. It's kind of like that scene in Top Gun where Tom Cruise's character is riding his motorcycle near NAS Miramar for Top Gun school, looking at the Tomcats. Very cool.

EWR has been getting better and better.

I used to live in my parents house about 15 miles from EWR in Northern NJ. I would take my daily bike ride at 4pm. Some days no AC; but on the days that they were in my area there were huge numbers. I was bored of all the CO 737s, but just waited for the big boys; 747s of ElAl, L'thansa, AF, BA, Virgin (usually two Virgin 747s). It was great. I bought a little pair of binos and took them with me so I could stop and get a real close look. I made it like a game; seeing how many rare ones I could see like the CSA airbus or the LOT 767. The last one I was able to see before I moved, to cross off my list, was Alitalia.

On Sundays I had to head out befor 10am to get a good open opision so that I could see the SIN 744 come over. On a clear day it was just a thrill.

I moved to my own house about a year ago, much farther out. I miss those bike rides!

Heathrow is great for overflights, if you get bored of watching the stuff in and out of LHR.

I live in a small city in central IL, we have a pathetically small airport here, all flights go to either ORD, MDW, or STL and are all commuter flights, so I never see any big jets.

But the skies over Illinois are crowded with overflights, in the mornings and evenings, I can usually spot 10 vapor trails at once, it's quite a site watching 5 aircraft running parallel going north and south (most are headed for ORD), and watching another 5 vapor trails heading east-west (transcons). There's never a clear day here, because even if there aren't any clouds, there's plenty of white lines criss-crossing the sky from jets, it's really cool. Sometimes I can make out what type of aircraft it is, but usually they're going too high and too fast to observe anything.
