Ethiopian To HKG

According to justplanes, Ethiopian will be shotrtly launching flights to Hong Kong.
Boeing 767s will fly twice a week from Addis Ababa to Hong Kong via Bangkok, with the outbound leg via Djibouti.

This seems a really bizarre route, I mean, I am not aware of any real demand out of HKG to that part of the world. And the stop in Djibouti is it necessary?
The stop is one way only so surely there wouldnt be any traffic rights, which leads me to ask, could it be a technical stop? The 767 can definetly handle a greater range than that.

Ideas anyone?

I think Ethiopian is a very good Airline (for an african Airline). But i can`t think, that Ethiopian can earn mutch Money on this Route. 90% of the ethiopian People are poor, they have no the Money to buy a Ticket.....and in Djibouti the People are happy when they can buy a bread, so this Flight is SHIT !!!! They can not earn Money on this Flight !!!!!! ( my Opinion)

You all are wrong. I have seen Ehtiopians very rich. Sure most are poor but some are rich. In Djibouti, it is a poor but a rapidly developing country. Besides, when they stop in Bangkok, they will get their seats full.

Ethiopian Airlines will operates 2x weekly Addis Ababa-Djibouti-Bangkok-Hong Kong.

I believe that Djibouti is a technical stop flight, like Anchorage.

Ethiopian don't rely on O&D traffic. They carry a large number of 6th freedom passengers - so ET would be bringing HKG and BKK traffic thru Addis to other East and West African cities. There are real limited options from the Far East to this part of Africa and ET will be one of the fastest ways of getting from Lagos to Bangkok or Hong Kong to Nairobi. Currently ET already fly 3x weekly to BKK so an extension of the route to HKG doesn't seem surprising.

So because a lot of people in Ethiopia and Djibouti are poor and all the flights out of these airport are "SHIT"- The country of Ethiopia should not bother with an airline at all? Perhaps not even airport? ( And how come you still see many European airlines operating 747s into these African countries )And why bother importing other necessities into the country since most of the people will be happy if they can buy a bread? Yeah sure

ET's enjoying a reasonable load for their ADD - BKK flights, being 1 of the only 3 African carriers operating into the airport. Thailand welcomes a great amount of African tourist every year and most of them use ET via ADD. As Airpearl said, ET is one of the quickest way ( other than SA and MS ) to travel from Africa into the far east without connecting through a European airport. In my opinion, the airline will be better off with better schedules ( I have heard that the flight will depart to HKG after midnight ) and more frequency on the BKK - HKG sector as this is one of the busiest international route out of BKK - and they can definately fill the plane up if they're given the rights to sell seats on this sector.

I think ET have one of the most extensive connection to Africa, therfore, attracting 'backpacking' passengers from Hong Kong. A similar compariso, who would really want to fly to Muscat from Hong Kong? Most Gulf Air passengers were backpackers to europe and use Muscat/Bahrain for transit only.
