If I wanted to take a trip from CLE to mojave, what airport would I fly into? LAX? PHX? Which is closest? Is it worth it?

Try for BUR, it's closest.

Take CO out to LAX, rent a car and drive out to MHV. Its about 90 minutes down the Antelope Valley Freeway. I suggest you call in advance and arrange a tour of the facility - they run $10 per person.

How about hotels? Anything (nice) near MHV? What advantages does a tour have?

If you can't do BUR, LAX is your best bet. But if you are caught in rush hour I don't envy you either way. BUR and LAX are 1.5 hrs from Mojave under the best conditions. You might consider Las Vegas. LAS is more like three hours, but you won't have to worry about the L.A. traffic.

Try Bakersfield. It's probably the closest mid-size airport there. Motels are plentiful in & around Mojave. Triple A can give you a run-down on them. Regards.

Heck, if you are doing Bakersfield you might as well try for Palmdale!  Smile

Call their office at 661-824-2433 to set up a tour. The airport manager's name is Dan Sabovich and he is a walking encyclopedia of the airport history.

I took the tour a couple weeks ago and you just go up to the front desk ask for the tour and they show you to the tour guide, who said that he usually only gets about 1 person per day to give a tour to, he drives you around the majority of the field and you also drive right in front of, and can see inside, Burt Rutans hanger where he keeps all his expiremental aircraft, but your not allowed to take photos of them. But i thiught it was pretty good.

That must be a new rule. I have a whole stack of pics of his weird contraptions from back in February.

If you go through IAH or PHX to ONT you would still only be 1 1/2 hours from Mojave but would not have to deal with any traffic. Also you would only be 15 minutes from the great Chino museum and only 30 min. from March AFB museum. March is great with its KC-97(? B-29 tanker), B-47, B-17, SR-71 and many more cool planes. While Ontario itself has much to be desired. There are many nice hotels, many good places to eat and the largest mall in Southern California less than a mile away from the airport.
I can drive faster than you
