Most B 747's Upper Decks are actually Business Class Seats. However, why don't they move their First Class on the Top Floor, and have the Business Class on the First Floor? I understand that some of the Business Class Seats are actually between First and Economy Class.
Upper decks are usually quieter. And by putting the First Class up there, it can provide the First Class Travellors a much quieter environment. But why don't they do that?

The nose section is much roomier than the upper deck. There is more room for overhead storage, and generally there is a large open area in the middle of the cabin providing even more space. The galley is also more spacious than those I have seen at the back of most upper decks.
You also have at least a small amount of traffic into and out of the cockpit on the upper deck. On the main level, the F cabin is accessed only by the F passengers and the f/a's that are working there.
Additionally, keep in mind that a handicapped passenger would have trouble going up the stairs (most airlines with Biz on the upper deck usually have a few rows on the main deck too). I worked for a medical assistance company and we frequently purchased F class seats for people with broken legs, back injuries, etc.

AFAIK, the U/D galley on the 744 is 28 carts while the A zone galley is only 16 carts.

plus, the windows taper forward in zone a, so passengers can see (kind of) forward out of the plane.

The nose section of the 747 is really the nicest place to sit. There is less traffic, one does not have to climb a stairway, one can disembark first, and it feels more exclusive. That said, the upper deck is also a nice area.

My answer: the upperdeck is cramped, lacks head room, lacks storage space, has narrow aisle.

IMHO the upper deck is far better than the pointy end. Up there, you get the feeling of being in a small exclusive airplane rather than lumped at one end of a large airplane. Albeit that the walls taper, I also like the space and surface between the side of the seat and the wall on the upper deck. Last flew, and will next fly, SQ bus class and always ask for the upper deck.

I've flown in First class on Lufthansa which was on the upper deck. All the rest that I've seen were Business class upstairs and First downstairs.
One nice thing I like about the upper deck is the shelf you have below the windows.

The FC in the nose section has door 1 (most of the times) for embarkment and disembarkment so the FC passengers dont have to walk through business class or economy.

Man.. i have to thank FlyVirgin744 cause i didnt relaize what the upper deck on a 747 looks like... Major claustophoiba if u ask me... Downstairs forward cabin is definitely first class material.

I have flown F on several airlines including the picture LH and SQ. NO COMPARIOSN when F is on the main deck. LH is nice on the upper, but much more cramped feeling then the rest on the main deck.

In the old days when Pan Am dominated international air travel, the upper desk was used as a first class lounge. During meals, seats would be swiveled and card tables would be extended to create several (think it was 4) dining tables that sat 4 persons and gourmet meals would be served, course by course. No PTVs, no flat beds, but it sure was a wonderful experience.

It depends on the config. and airline. Some airlines have First on the UD. Others have Business on the U.D. and second deck.

First class in the 747 nose is the nicest and quietest place to be on the plane.
Upper deck is a lot noiser and the 747 cockpit is very noisy from all the wind noise.
I've been in all these places and I really like the nose section.

EL AL has first class on the upper deck and my grandparents flew first while we flew business in the nose section on the lower deck. I went to visit them on the upper deck and the lowerdeck had a hell of a lot more room. The nose section on the lowerdeck is also kind of comfy. Unlike the upperdeck, you have more space to put a beverage table.

When Pan Am was flying no PTVs or flat beds even existed. They didn't have the technology at the time for thoses things. Therefore you cannot blame them for not having thoses things. Luft Hansa uses their upper deck for first class.

another problem wiht the upper deck is that because its further from the center of motion (a line that runs thru the cabin lengthwise) you feel motions much more. People with inner ear problems can get very very motion sick on the upper deck of 747s.
Also whats been said about the nose and sapce is completly true, and you cant even hear the engines up there dugin cruise, the A/C mutes it out

In those days, the idea of Commerical Airliines is to fasten everyone on their seats and take them from one place to another. Besides, thy didn't have the technology at that time for things like PTVs, Flat Beds etc.

I'm glad they have biz on the 2nd floor in most cases, I like the upper cabin (especially in a --300 or -400 where it is larger). It does feel like a smaller more private plane. The slope of the windows is a pain when on the ground, but doesn't bother me in the air. Also the bins next to the windows are great for people who want to have a window seat, and have access to storage. (Oviously I normaly fly biz on long flights, not first.)

Well they dont have any of that now either, as far as coach goes!! Of course there are exceptions for PTVs, like Jetblue or SQ. Besides, how do you back up your statement that they had no idea of what personal service was back then ?

I suppose they have the technology to provide flat beds, PTVs etc. Though not as nice and advanced as today's maybe.
