Airliners.net Meeting In Europe

Fri Jul 20, 2001 11:43 pm

I've noticed that there are Airliners.net Member-meetings in the USA.
Are there any meetings in Europe, too? (London. Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, etc.)

Should be fun to keep an A.net meeting in Europe. But as see the number of replies to this topic I doubt it would become a success. However, if there is an A.net meeting in Amsterdam sometime I will try to be there.

Hee, it's early in the morning in Europe. That's why there haven't been much replies (OK, it's 12.00 ....  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

Why not at ZRH?

I would be interested....I think it should be in a major city and airport like LHR CDG FRA or AMS though. Which of these airports has the best observation deck ?

I think a meeting would be great. Especially on weekends the airlines have pretty good fares to many Airports.

That would be great.  Smile
I live in Brussels but I could easily come to Paris, Amsterdam or London. If you ever come to Brussels, please let me know. You've got my e mail address. Brussels National has quite a bit of international traffic.
I know Amsterdam Schipol is a nice airport to spot, so is Zurich Kloten but that's a bit too far from where I live if I come just for the week end. Fares to Switzerland are not that cheap.
The two major European airports I know well, excluding Brussels of course, are Paris Charles de Gaulle and London Heathrow.

American 767 is right, when there is a meeting in Europe, it should be in Brussels, IN THE HEART OF EUROPE  Smile
But I wouldn't mind making a trip to Heathrow or Amsterdam or...

Frankfurt would be nice. But I can go practically everywhere. It would be nice. I hate the airport in Athens. Very crappy locations and not so many good photos possible.  Pissed

Why don´t you just come to the International Trading Fair at FRA - it´s every year on the first November weekend. I bet quite a lot of the collectors going there are airliners.net members.

Pitty this post didn't show up a few weeks earlier. The Aerosalon at Le Bourget would have been a great opportunity. Lot's of spotters are around Paris at that time. Ah well, let's keep it in mind for the next airshow

I'm within an hour of AMS. Must have missed the post because it was swamped between all those Merkin posts while I was shooting last night (got home around 11PM) Big grin

It's a shame that Poland is not the center of the aviation world. I won't be able to make it, but I'd recommend Amsterdam as your meeting point. Nice airport and great city!

I could almost definetely make it to LHR.

Also AMS would be a possibility but from memory there are so many runways that sometimes there is alot of running around needed!

LHR would be my choice, as i have never visited as a spotter (only a passenger) and there is such a rich variety of traffic (plus the fact most people can get here)

Cheers

Enough people with cars around AMS who can take visitors  Smile Just arrange to share the parking fees for the terminal parking which are kinda steep.

Frankfurt has great observation decks.
I highly recommend FRA.

Airsicknessbag, I'll probably be near FRA the first weekend in November. Or at least the days until friday before that weekend.
So that'd be a good idea for me.  Smokin cool

sounds like everyone agrees that FRA has the best spotting deck....
what about organized tours of the airport ? I read somewhere that Brisbane Airport in Australia has tours for enthusiasts...what about in Europe ?
My preferences would be LHR, FRA and CDG (terminal 1 is pretty interesting but not so easy to move around to find a good spot). LHR in terms of variety !

Yes, there are bus tours on the apron at FRA. I did one, but that was about 15 years ago. Such a tour of 45 minutes costs € 2.50 (observation decks) + € 3.50 (the actual bus tour).
I just researched FRA´s website and found out that they have a kind of open house day on August 11/12: free entrance to the observation decks AND free bus tours on the apron (duration 45 minutes [!]), plus other activities and festivities.
I guess I´ll be there that weekend.

Yeah but how many photographers here actually visit the observation decks? I normally sit under the approach or parallel to the runway, like most photographers here.

If it is close enough to the runway to shoot with a 300mm lense on rotation/touchdown i will be ok.

Cheers

I'd prefer BRU, just because it's the closest airport...

Or how about ZRH? (I still have a free ticket ZRH I think, if it's still valid)

I can afford AMS on Easyjet, for a day return (arrive early leave late) costs about £35 and there are places to spot all around the airport

I think this is typical european, nobody knows where, in this case where we should meet each other. Instead everyone tolds where they can go or where they will be on different dates.  Laugh out loud

Now, I think we should choose one of these three airports where we should meet each other.

London Heathrow (LHR)
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
Frankfurt Main (FRA)

Do not ever mention any 4th or 5th airport, please choose one of these, thank you.

My first choice is LHR, but i could quite reasonably go to AMS if everyone agree's with that

Frankfurt is very good, there is the possibility to join a tour through the Lufthansa maintenance area, including trips into a B744 and A340, without extra costs.
The two observation decks are great  Big thumbs up

Someone asked about photographers at FRA:

The times I've been to FRA, I've seen quite a few. Some are casual, and some are serious. Yesterday (22 July) I would say there were about 15-20 serious photographers. I define serious is someone who has more than $1000 worth of equipment with him/her.

Most of them were at the Terminal 1 observation desk, which was fairly crowded. I saw a few at Terminal 2 as well.

With a 300MM lense, you can get great shots of landings at the terminal 1 observation deck it is closer to the runway than terminal 2. You can do fairly decent at terminal 2 as well.

Oh and the "free weekends" at Frankfurt. If the weather is nice, the deck will be packed at Termianl 1. (Terminal 2's observation deck was not free). The free days are to help the airport sell the fact that the airport needs to expand more.

20/21/22 august AMS. The terrace at AMS is according to me one of the largest in Europe and it is free. It is easy to reach by public transport and by car.

I'd prefer AMS above FRA and LHR.

I could go to AMS by train, from Brussels. I'm not sure how much this costs, but I bet it's cheaper than having to fly to AMS.

FRA is great, but as already mentioned, I think it would be too expensive for me, being just a 'poor' student...

If someone decides that it will take place in AMS, then count me in...

Why all this talk about going on the observation decks?

At almost every airport you get better oppertunities from somewhere around the airport grounds, and proffesionals very rarely use Observation decks.

Just look at AMS, the observation deck is huge, but you need a 600mm+ lense to see 1 Runway, out of the 5, so there is really not much point. I beleive it is the same at LHR.

FRA maybe different but i am sure there are better places around the airport.

If i would go too one of these meetings then i would be at the end of a runway somewhere, not on the observation deck (obviously we'd meet in the airport Big grin)

London is the BEST place where we can meet cause it's easy and cheap to get there from all over Europe thanks to the low-fares carrier like Ryanair, GO, Easyjet and Buzz.
Thanks to FR maybe for 1 pound!!!!
