L1011 vs MD11 vs DC10

Fri Jul 15, 2016 10:35 am

Which of these is your favorite and why? I figured they would be a fair comparison since they are all 3 engined widebodies
I love the L1011, I Have vague memories of when i was a child going plane spotting with my dad in the 90s and seeing one take off ( Caledonian airlines i think ) and was amazed by the roar those engines make ( RB211, Same as the 757? ) never got to fly in one though, born too late

I have a soft spot fop winglets, so the MD-11 has my heart. She's just so nice to look at. I flew on a L-1011 a couple times on ATA's LAS-HNL route. It was about 15 or so years ago. Their interior wasn't too terrible. The flight was miserable, only because it was a 7ish hour flight on a full economy layout so we were smashed in the plane. But other than that, the aircraft itself was nice.

I preferred the DC-10 and MD-11 due to their much larger windows than on the L-1011. L-1011 windows also seemed to be positioned slightly too high.

There's something nice about the S-duct the L1011 tail has... But sadly I never got to fly in any of the trijets :x

I always fondly remember the early versions of the DC-10 and L1011, as they had the 8 abreast economy seating as designed by the manufacturer. Like the 9 abreast economy seating of the B747 ... it was a wonderful era where airlines competed with service. By the time the MD-11 came along, 9 abreast was the standard for economy and it made the aircraft "just another wide body plane".

The DC-10 was much quieter inside than the L1011, as the RB211s on the L1011 had a very distinctive rumble. I remember sitting in the aft cabin of the L1011 once and the vibration on startup being so close to the centre engine was almost like sitting in a Super Connie!

But in my opinion, the original L1011 had a much more attractive interior making the original DC-10 rather bland by comparison.

Yes, when the L1011 first came out it was something to behold. The interiors were very graceful, the windows were still polarized and the center seats had their own closet. Lines like "On the L1011 you are never more than one seat away from an aisle", and "The most advanced airliner in the sky!"

And they did shake. We had a saying about them. In the summertime shimmy time is take off time.
When taking off, the ceiling panels were shaking one way, the wall panels another, it was quite noisy all that plastic rubbing together. But as soon as you lifted off, it all stopped.

yeah and there was no overhead bins in the aisle/middle of the aircraft. Oxygen masks were placed behind the seats.

Yeah... I remember I flew on DC-10, it was an odd one - shaking all the time and I could not sleep and there was no turbulence outside. I have flown with lots of airliners but DC10 is an odd one - shaking all the time,

I spent a lot of time on NW DC-10s and they were nice. The DC-10 was an attractive airplane and the MD-11 more so, but there was something about the L-1011 that was just special. The S-duct was part of it, but the nose was just a little lower, a little flatter than the DC-10 and it had a very characteristic look to it. Never got to fly aboard one, though.
