Which Carrier to Asia?

Thu Aug 25, 2016 3:57 pm

Hey Guys,

Simple question here. I will be flying to Manila next May to see a friend and I am not sure which carrier to take since fares are similar. I am considering coach between American, United, ANA, or Korean. Which airline should I choose?

Thanks!

From ORD and connecting in either NRT or HKG.

Earlier this year, I flew Y to NRT using ANA going and UA coming. NH was many degrees better in terms of service and catering. UA made 1 meal run shortly after takeoff and then the FA's hid in the galley for the next 7 hours. NH served a dinner, mid flight snack, and breakfast, plus had snacks out in the galley the whole way. Just be aware that NH seats tend to be rather narrow ( but with 34" pitch), though judging by your profile pic, you seem to be fairly skinny.
Can't comment on Korean, but AA's 777 seats in coach tend to have very little room and are going towards 10 abreast.

If I were you, I would take the UA-NH route ORD-NRT-MNL or ANA all the way.
I have heard good reviews from them.

Either ANA or spend a little more and fly CX through HKG. Both carriers offer substantially better service in Y than UA or AA.

NH, CX, SQ would be my top 3. Probably in the world as well.

SQ doesn't fly to ORD.

Not a big deviation? Using SQ means three stops instead of one and more than 3000 nm longer distance. Moreover, more stops mean more transit time between flights. Thus quite much more travel time.

Just fly as far as NRT and pick up NH to MNL or fly SFO-ICN and pick up OZ. Even if you did go through SIN it's no big deal. I have flown way bigger deviations than that. It wouldn't worry me if it meant fI flew a preferred carrier.

A quick search shows there are some connections available using SQ to fly ORD-MNL. Using them adds 10-13 hours to the travel time compared to using more logical flights. Not a realistic option for people unless they consider their time to be completely worthless.

Getting a slightly better onboard service is not worth adding several hours of travel time (and possibly several hundred dollars of ticket price).

And several more opportunities for your bags to go astray and for delays due to weather etc. The fewer stops the better.

Find a cheap deal on Frontier, Southwest etc. and fly to SFO or LAX and take the non-stop Philippines Airlines B777 service...

Kinda late answer....sorry.

If I may suggest, fly to either Toronto or Vancouver and use the Philippines flight direct to Manila (I think Toronto still routes through Vancouver?). I would normally suggest Cathay as well, but they use Terminal 3 in Manila now, so might not be so great. Could use them via Cebu if you want CX service!

My pick would be KE or NH as an alternative.
