No more free newspapers for Lufthansa passengers?

Sat Jan 07, 2017 9:11 am

I have noted that Lufthansa disposed of all its newspaper racks and that passengers can no longer get newspapers (and magazines) for free. Only the lounges still have some. The free coffee and tea from machines at the hub gates was also dropped.
While it may not seem to be a major thing, I do think that it is very bad, since reading free newspapers when having to wait is nice and it further shows Lufthansa's willingness to participate in the "race to the bottom". It is also very bad for the newspapers, which are suffering badly already. Their role in society is not fulfilled by online-media, once the newspapers are too weak/dead.

They are switching to e-journals

I have seen they have installed Nespresso Pro machines in Frankfurt at some gates, but of course the coffee is no longer for free

Airlines rarely paid for the newspapers - normally they were supplied free of charge by the publishers as a promotional tool, and because they could count copies distributed this way as circulation for attracting advertisers. With the major decline in newspaper circulation and advertising revenue, the publishers simply can't afford it any more. For once this isn't airlines cutting costs, there was no cost to begin with.

I guess they're following the American business model. Save money wherever and however you can and screw the client

There is also the weight saving of not carrying said newspapers.

I have noticed in HK that most people don't pick up a newspaper when boarding anymore.

With SAS you can download lots of newspapers for free in the app. I guess Lufthansa Will di the same.

Less to clean up after a flight, too.

If printed newspapers were so terrible, why would airlines still offer them in their lounges for their premium passengers?
Because they aren't! Fact is that most passengers do NOT fly with tabletts at hand and that if they would they weight onboard would increase more! You can read a paper in the gate lounge to kill time and don't have to bring it onboard. Plus, reading a newspaper on a screen is just awful!

I only read newspapers in planes when free.

I have even forgotten how to read a newspaper. I remember when I was a kid or teenager and I would read El País or Le Monde for maybe one hour or even more with the weekend specials. Now I take a printed newspaper and I have a 10-second attention span. Most stuff is outdated (hours old), biased (political interests of the company owning that particular newspaper) or completely irrelevant to my interests.

Internet killed the newspaper.

Not true, LH handed out the newspapers at the gate area and NOT onboard! Unfortunately, most newspapers were snagged up by passengers flying not with LH - so in some airports, like HAM, you can collect your newspaper only AFTER boarding in the jet bridge.

Those paper newspapers (is that redundant?) are valuable! Seems I get my copy of the INYT or FT stolen once or twice a year onboard a flight or another. I travel with a tablet and/or a laptop but to date nothing beats the convenience of paper when tossing around while trying to sleep, to read during a meal, or on those airlines that do require all electronic devices to be off for ascent and descent.
