Where is the longest and shortest jetway?

Mon Feb 27, 2017 12:41 am

I am sure it's not the longest but I remember in the 1980s and 90s RDU Terminal 1 had a very long jetway that was one of Piedmont then US Air's gates, it is probably still there and being used by Southwest. It was twice as long as the other ones and I am not really sure what the purpose was.

The shortest one I have ever seen was at the previous JAX airport terminal. Not all of them but the ones for CO for sure.

AUS currently has some very long jetways as they expand the east side of the terminal building.

The gates designed for Saabs and CRJs at MSP's A and B concourses gotta be on the running for the shortest jetbridge.

this was somewhat discussed a while ago (the longest side anyway)

LGA has the shortest jetbridges used for mainline planes that I have ever used. Parking is extremely tight at that airport

LHR T2B & T5 have some unusually long jetbridges.

The Virgin pier at Terminal 2 in Sydney has some particularly short ones:

I don't think they're still used but they are still installed, the gates with multiple jetways at LAX T6, the jetways nearest the terminal (For L1 if both are in use) are very short.

Shortest jetway is probably in a place like EUG. Those bridges are really short.

Longest ones probably are at LHR or perhaps SZX. DEN has some long ones at the end of A too.

ORD B24 is ~410 feet (main bridge is shared with several other gates however)
DEN's longest is A25 at ~300 feet.
SEA S15 is ~295 feet
ATL F9 is ~275 feet
DFW D30 is ~280 feet

You aren't going to get exact numbers because bridges can be retracted and extended depending on the aircraft type and parking location. So a total walking length of 280 feet one day might be 275 the next if a different plane requires different positioning.

Most of the old Terminal 1 has been demolished including the old Terminal B and late addons to Terminal A at the other end.

It is still showing on Google Maps, it is gate A8.

JFK T3 (Pan Am Worldport) had some very short jetways on the 1970s extension for their 747s.

I think that the bridges at gates 2,4,6 and 9 of DCA are among the shortest in the world.

The over-wing jetways at AMS have got to be up there for longest.

The old F concourse (in the background) at DTW had some really short jet bridges. No wheel assemblies, and the a/c's nose was literally under the building canopy:

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

DCA Terminal A has some of the shortest gates I have seen. Gates 2,4,6,and 9 only move forward and are used by southwest.

ELM has a (that means one) long jetway for the type of planes used there, they use them for Dash-8's as well as A320's.

ALB also has a dual-jetway!?
Anybody know why an airport like ALB has one?

Does that really count as a jetway? I mean, i think of the movable part as the jetway. The passageway would be a sort of exception? Maybe, but then again it could be part of the jetway.
Well uh, I obviously decided to refine this but i dont know how.

are those "telescoping" connectors on the banjo at DCA still in use? I remember them the first time I flew into DCA on a Northwest Orient flight from BOS. They were 8 feet long at most.

The gates on the rotundas in the told National Sundrome/TWA Terminal B/Terminal 6 were similarly short.

There used to be a set of USAir gates on the B pier at Port Columbus (CMH) that had get bridges that connected with other jet bridges--felt like you were a hamster in a set of tube mazes.

A few of the gates at JFK Terminal 7 go forever as they snake around 747 parking positions. Similarly there are a few jetways at the end of the F and G concourses at ORD that crazy long.

Then there are the gates that have pre-jetway mazes inside the building that are essentially extensions of the jetway: A few of these exist at CDG 2F; all the gates at JFK Terminal 4 force you to walk at least 200 feet in a mini-pier before you get to the jetway and several gates at Boston's Terminal A (gates 1, 2, 3, 13, 14, 21 and 22...although especially gate 13) all have very long walkways before you get to the jetway.

Those were built for National.

When Piedmont was
using them in the 80s, they decided to get newer, longer ones....but yes that lone CO one...yes, I remember it.

MIA had some of that size too

MIA was one of the first airports to use them in the late 60's and they where fixed cabs with only horizontal travel to reach airplane..

MCI, for quite some time, had similar jet bridges in Terminal B, at least, and used by Delta.Gates numbered in the high 50s and Gate 60, as I recall.
