How easy is it for an airline to add a new route?

Wed Mar 29, 2017 2:04 am

I've always wondered how much effort/labor it takes for an airline to add a new route, both seasonally and year round. How long is the process? What is the application process like? Do they have to apply for landing/takeoff rights? gates? I'm guessing it would take some coordination with airport, staffing the airport, organizing the fleet/crew, etc. Do airlines add new routes for competition, add revenue, better hub access? I think this whole process is fascinating. It looks like the airlines just announce a new route overnight, but I bet the behind the scene work must be astounding.
