Current Airlines with Cities in their Title

Wed Apr 26, 2017 5:08 am

I was skimming photos and wondered, how many airlines currently flying have cities in their title?

I am sure the list will be extensive based on geography, but I was looking at the following:

Brussels Airlines
Bangkok Air
Cebu Pacific
Miami Air

Who else can add to the list?

I know there were a bunch that used to fly, but was curious about current operators.

Denver Air Connection (part 135 operator but they do scheduled flights between Denvers reliever airports and Grand Junction).

Until recently Seaport existed which was a portmanteau of Seattle and Portland.

There once was Dan Air London.

Amsterdam Airlines was an airline too, not anymore.

Another one not yet mentioned here but still active is People's Viennaline named after the city of Vienna.

Singapore Airlines is an anomaly since Singapore is a city-state.
Singapore, the city usually refers to the main island.
It could be argued that that airline's name is in reference to the state, not the city, since it is the successor of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines, which was the national airline of both states.

It's a joke about Atlanta being to Delta as London is to BA (a joke made earlier in the thread).

On topic, Tunisair is ambiguously named after the country and its capital/hub, although the original name of the carrier was pretty clearly to the country. That said, the name of the city is in the name of the airline, and the name of the country isn't, so it probably counts here. Similar idea for Luxair although it lacks the full name of the city (or the country) in the casual name of the company. One could, I suppose, say something similar about AM, although that is more clearly the entire country.

Delta may not be a city, but it's a region that most people wouldn't think of when they mention the airline. The Mississippi Delta, which is where Delta Air Lines began service.

China wins this game easily due to the number of subsidiary airlines setup by the Big 4 with local subsidies. The list is twice as long if you include airlines with province or region names, instead of just limited to cities.

Under CA
(NX) (majority owned by CNAC, which is the holding company that owns CA)
(CA) (exists in name only, entire fleet is CA wetlease)

Under CZ
(CZ) (exists in name only, doesn't have its own fleet)
(CZ) (exists in name only, doesn't have its own fleet)

Under MU
(F4 - defunct)
(JM - defunct/never received authorization to begin service)
(WU - defunct)

Under HU

Under CX

There may very well be a Delta Louisiana, but the airline isn't named for it. From The Delta Museum archives:

"As Woolman recalled, “When we got into the passenger business and decided to change the company name, we looked for a short name, preferably with five letters. It was ‘Delta.’” The new name fit the crop-dusting company, formerly known as Huff Daland Dusters, based in the delta region of the Mississippi River."

It seems that Hamburg is not a good city to name an airline after. At least, Hamburg Airline, Hamburg International and Hamburg Airways all don't exist anymore. Well, Air Hamburg still does...
Hahn Air is not located at that airport anymore, but was founded there.

Then there are quite some others in Germany, most defunct. Better known might be Augsburg Airways and Nürnberger Flugdienst, others are Bremenfly, Berline, Bremerhaven Airline, and Transaer Cologne.

The was once the "Nürnberger Flug Dienst" (NFD) from Nuremberg (Nürnberg in German). Actually it still existing, just with a new name after they merged with RFG in 1993: Eurowings.

In Russia there have been quite a few airlines with cities, districts or rivers in their names: Air Volga (Volgograd), Belgorod Air (Belgorod), Bryansk Air (Bryansk), Domodedovo Airlines (Domodedovo), Donavia (Rostov on Don), Krasair (Krasnoyarsk), Kirov Air (Kirov), Moscow Airlines, Moscovia, Moskva (all Moscow), Novosibirsk Air (Novosibirsk), Omskavia (Omsk), Orenair (Orenburg), Perm Airlines (Perm), Pulkov Air (Pulkovo), Samara Airlines (Samara), Tambov Air (Tambov), Vladivostok Avia (Vladivostok), Vnukovo Airlines (Vnukovo District), Voronezhavia (Voronezh).

Many of them were former divisions of the Soviet Aeroflot and have been using former Aeroflot aircraft after the Soviet airline collapsed.

Locally we have Van City Seaplanes, Vancouver often being shortened to Van.

There is also Kelowna Flightcraft Air Charter, named after the BC town of Kelowna, airport code YLW. Sort of rebranded KF Aerospace these days, buts thats what the KF is.

There is Grand Canyon Airlines too, there is a town with airport GCN named after the canyon. Various helicopters too, I think Grand Canyon Helicopters merged with Papillon but not sure what the new name is, official trading name is Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters I believe.

Seattle area floatplane operator Kenmore Air is officially based in Kenmore at the top end of Lake Washington.

Also Sydney Seaplanes in Australia.

Malta doesn't count, Malta is a country, or more specifically the biggest of a group of islands comprising the nation of Malta, the capital is Valletta and the airport is not even there, its at Luqa.

Very few entries from the Balkans... at this moment there is Air Bucharest (capital city of Romania) with only one active B737-300.
And two carriers that have ceased operations years ago:
Air Sofia- a big operator of Antonov 12
Air Prishtina, which operated a A320 for few months in 2004 .
Also there is a rumor that VIA in Air VIA/VIA Airways comes from Varna International Airways.

In Ukraine, a current airline is Z6 -- Dniproavia, from Dnipro city.

Plenty of defunct ones: Lviv Airlines, Odessa Airlines, Luhansk Airlines, Rivne Universal Avia, Aeromost Kharkiv and Aviatrans Kiev, among others.

I'm pretty sure the allusion to Delta, Lousiana, was a joke (as in, who the hell knows that city, and it sure as hell ain't named after it)
