If you consider Treviso to be a Venice airport, you should not only look at the population of Venice, but of the PaTreVe region, and that is well above 750,000.

And Venice is still a lot larger than Narvik…

There are winners here? What are the criteria for that? :D

If one looks at the size of the city or metropolitan area and two operating commercial airports, Reykjavik beats out Venice.

Population of Reykjavik: 123,246 Metropolitan area ca. 235,000 two commercial airports KEF and RKV. KEF only international and RKV domestic with a few international flights.

The city of Glasgow (UK) has an official population of under 600,000 and is served by Glasgow International (GLA) and Glasgow-Prestwick (PIK). Somewhat dwindling services from PIK though, with just a few remaining Ryanair services and you might also say Edinburgh (EDI) some 45 miles to the east has a greater influence on the Greater Glasgow area as a third airport in terms of air traveller choice.

Thing is, Belfast International has 6 million passengers per year, Belftast City 3 million in a city with 335k population, or 550k in the surrounding area.....

That's nothing uncommon. Amsterdam airport handles 63 million passengers per year whilst there are only 1,3 million people living in Amsterdam, 2,4 million in the Amsterdam metro region and 17,1 million in the whole of the Netherlands. In other words, Amsterdam airport serves roughly 48 times the population of Amsterdam or 26 times the population of the metro area or 3,7 times the population of the Netherlands on a yearly basis. More or less the same numbers apply to other airports.

However, Milan can hardly be called a small city. It has about 1,3 million inhabitants in the city alone, 3,2 million in the metropolitan city, 4,2 million in the commuting area and 5,2 million in the built-up area. It's the second-largest city in Italy.

Cities with multiple airports are not hard to find, but most of them are big cities like Milan. We're talking about small cities here and Milan certainly isn't small.

Columbus has John Glenn International (CMH) for predominately passenger traffic and Rickenbacker (LCK) for cargo although Allegiant is doing nicely passenger wise out of LCK.

Allegiant is kind of known for using alternative airports wherever they're available. They're using Phoenix Mesa instead of Phoenix Sky Harbour to serve Phoenix, Concord instead of Charlotte, St. Petersburg-Clearwater instead of Tampa and no doubt there are more examples like that. I like that approach, it suits them. Shame on all cities that think they don't need a secondary airport for airlines like Allegiant that prefer lower costs (secondary airports are mostly cheaper) over convenience.

That's a good one. US actually served INT until 2000.

Fayetteville, AR briefly had service at both Drake Field (FYV) and the new Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA) in 1998-1999. US was the last airline to leave FYV in 1999.

Washington, D.C. has a population of only 681,170. Three airports, all out of town.

Of course, the metropolitan area has a population of several millions, depending upon where you draw the borders.

Deer Valley is a GA airport and PHX is hardly a small metro area.

The Rio Grande Valley area of Texas has 3 airport for only around 1 million inhabitants, for 3 main cities none with over 200k people. From HRL, it is 30 minutes east to BRO or 30 minutes west to MFE, so they are very close to each other. McAllen (MFE) has AA, UA, G4, and Aeromar (to Mexico City). Harlingen (HRL) has UA (Express), DL (seasonal, Connection), WN, and Sun Country (seasonal). BRO has UA (Connection) and AA (Eagle). United serves all 3!!!

Dubai, an emirate with a population of 2.7 million, has two airports-DXB and DWC with scheduled airline service. Given that DXB is such a high profile hub, it's easy to forget that the city isn't a huge metropolis by any stretch of the imagination.
Of course both airports have larger catchement areas-basically the rest of the country (population around 10 million).

I'm just waiting for somebody to suggest that the "small town" of New York has at least 5 or 6 airports, with just 16 million catchment area or whatever.

Seriously, I have rarely seen a thread where posters seem unable to grasp the OP's question or intent as gravely as in this one. This thread has therefore lost its relevance.

Mods, please consider changing the title to a more suitable one, alternatively locking the thread.

Dubai is far too big to be a small city. The title clearly says less than 750.000 people. Dubai has 3,6 times that much inhabitants and therefor doesn't count.

Even Panama City is too big, although not by far. 880.000 people living in the city, excluding the metro area. However, Panama does have two airports (Tocumen and Marcos A. Gelabert). Both of them handle commercial airline service.

Aren't there quite a few cities worldwide, large and small, that have an airport with commercial service and another that serves only general aviation?

Bratislava has a relatively small population (450 000 people city, 600 000 people metro area), and is served by BTS (Bratislava Airport); however VIE is so close and so major, one is bound to say Bratislava is literally served by two airports. Obviously, it's not the major user of the second one.
