Do you say "SAS" or "S-A-S" and "ANA" or "A-N-A"?

Thu Jun 29, 2017 5:40 am

The airlines "Scandinavian" and "All Nippon" could be pronounced "SAS" or "S-A-S" and "ANA" or "A-N-A" respectively. The airlines themselves refer to themselves as "SAS" and "Ey-N-Ey" as far as I know?

S-A-S & A-N-A. Don't forget E-V-A Air as the company has stated many times it's not pronounced eva.

ANA is usually pronounced A-N-A.

Interestingly, their competitor JAL is usually pronounced "Jal" or "Jaru"

I think it depends on language.

In Finland and in Finnish most people says "SAS", "ANA" etc.

In English I personally would say "S-A-S" and "A-N-A".

Actually, not in my experience.
On the PA, the flight attendants pronounced it "sauce," which really took me by surprise.

Similarly, I know that E.V.A. is not "eeevah," but I still say it that way.

I say S-A-S or Sassynavian or Scandy, ANA or All Nippon. K-L-M or "Klum". I often refer to airlines in their slang form
I refer to THY as "Thigh" though.. T-H-Y sounds strange to me

Basically in the Scandinavian languages SAS is pronounced "sass", but assume it just become this throughout the years as it is easier to say "sass", than S-A-S ("es-ai-es"), although S-A-S if formally the correct way

When we hosted Japanese exchange students several years ago, they pronounced them "Anna" and "Jahl". I was surprised since I assumed A-N-A and J-A-L. Of course, I say "EVA" so.....

In German, I use ANA, S-A-S, K-L-M, J-A-L and EVA

Funnily enough the two in the title, I and people I know don't use any form suggested, but it's "Nippon" and "S-K"! For the others I say "Jal" as a word, and regrettably "Eva" as a word, are we sure that's an acronym? What's the V stand for? Also, I say "T-H-Y".

E-V-A confuse people already and called themselves eva with their call sign , , ee--wa-- it's hard to get people change to say E - V - A.
where in asia where people says S-A-S , and A - N - A , where in americas most people just pronounce sas and ana

It is E-V-A. EVA Airways is a part of the Evergreen Group. My understanding is the owners wanted to call the carrier Evergreen Airlines. However, it already existed in the US. So, they took the EV from Evergreen and the A from Airlines and came up with E-V-A. Not really an acronym. Why it is Airways over Airlines I have never heard.

ANA is officially pronounced "A-N-A". Back in the days, they additionally pronounced themselves "Ana", but "Ana" can also mean "hole" in Japanese, so they went with "A-N-A". Many Japanese people still say "Ana" though.
Btw, JAL is officially pronounced "Jal".

Most of Japanese say "Ana" and "Jaru".
Even call "Zen-nikkuu" for ANA and "Nikko" or "Nihon Koukuu" for JAL.

I say "Jal" and "A-N-A", but mostly because that's how the airlines themselves pronounce it in their respective commercials. (I know most actual Japanese people say "Ana", as do the airline's employees when talking amongst themselves.)

I say "S-A-S" and I used to say "E-V-A" but was surprised to hear my first EVA commercial a while back and learned that the airline pronounces it "Eva" (though with a long "E" for some reason - if it's from Evergreen you'd think it'd be "Eh-vuh"). So since then, that's how I've said it.

A-N-A as its an abbreviation of All nippon airlines
Scandi or SAS for SAS, who operate under the "SAS" brand
Never ever been E-V-A. Its EVA.

I always said S-A-S, A-N-A, J-A-L, and Eva. Not until recently did I find out it's actually E-V-A. I blame the lettering, no dashes or dots to distinguish the acronym.

At least some of the acronyms without dots have been "de-acronymed." LAN (Linea Aerea Nacional) is a great example. I think that became intentional as LAN expanded outside of Chile, but it was LAN and not L-A-N within Chile even before the expansion.

LOT can't be initials. What would it stand for? LLP would be the Polish acronym.

Most of my Japanese friends refer to ANA as "Zen-ni-ku" when speaking in Japanese to other Japanese speakers. I've never heard them say "ANA" though they do usually say "A-N-A" when speaking to non-Japanese speakers.

Strange, because all the announcements in Japanese airports refer to NH as "ay-en-ay", even in Japanese announcements.

Lol this is my kind of thread...

For me, it's "Sass" and "A-N-A".

I also say "Eva" and "Jal" like "y'all" but with a 'j'.... and used to pronounce Lufthansa "Luf-tan-sa" (I'm Texan) before I heard it pronounced the "correct" way.
