The first one that ever caught my eye (I guess my ears) was Jetblue 619, departing from Boston to San Diego (I was on the clearance frequency on FS2004 and overheard it, realizing 619 was one of San Diego's area codes).

The second one was Austin's flight to FLL, this one is 512 (one of the area codes here), so clearly it's no coincidence.

Me and my friend found several others, although this makes me wonder if the rest of the flight numbers are arbitrary or if they're determined based on something special?

315 involves SYR (SYR-JFK), 585 involves ROC (ROC-JFK), but 716 does not involve BUF (it's routed JAX-DCA). Weird.

Spirit does this as well.

One example I know quite well

NK 913 MCI-LAS 913 is an area code for Kansas (yes I know MCI is in Missouri but just barely)
NK 816 LAS-MCI 816 is a Missouri area code.

Not area code related but JetBlue also runs B6 500, from DAB to JFK in reference to the Daytona 500.

A lot of Spirit flights are numbered for the area code of the destination or departure airport.

JetBlue flight 801 is MCO-SLC, and 801 is the main SLC area code.

Here is a conspiracy theory for you: This forum has been anxiously waiting for many years to see B6 finally launch service to MSP. The central Minneapolis area code is 612, and according to flightaware, B6 has not used flight number 612 in over four years! It last appeared on a JAX-JFK routing. Perhaps they have it reserved for future MSP service, whenever it finally happens?

Not an area code, but jetBlue's DAB-JFK flight is numbered 500 for the Daytona 500. JFK-DAB is 393, but the area code for DAB is 386.

When I worked for Delta the SLC-PHL flight was 1776 and Las Vegas was 777.

When UA still served JFK I remember JFK-SFO being 415 which is SF's area code (well, one of them anyway, the other being 650), and SFO-JFK would use a NYC area code, although which one specifically escapes me. Nowadays 415 is used on LAX-EWR.

AA had a PHX - LAS flight as flight 777 with 7 being a "lucky" number for slot machines.

IIRC, DL ran several flights into SEA (usually from CVG I think) that were numbered 727, 747, 737, etc. They don't seem to be used anymore, but then, CVG-SEA frequencies have been heavily cut in the last decade or so.
