JNB: Widest commercial range?

Tue Dec 19, 2017 1:14 am

I'm curious ... does any airport have a wider range of commercial aircraft flying in and out of it (in terms of seat count) than JNB?

A couple of weeks ago, I was flying CX back to HKG, and we had to wait behind a Jetstream belonging to SA Airlink. At the same time, there were A380 from BA and AF parked at the airport. That is a fairly impressive range of seats from 29 to over 500!

Do other airports served by the A380 such as JFK, LHR, LAX also have anything smaller than the Jetstream flying into/out of the airport on scheduled commercial flights?

Not happening yet, but from May 2018, ORD will get the BA A380 next to 3E (Air Choice One) Cessna 208's with 8 seats.

Actually, it goes smaller. Mokulele flies the Cessna 200s into LAX at 9 seats

Not sure how many seats Boutique Air PC-12s have but they fly quite a few places served by heavy metal. The PC-12s are likely in the same category as the Mokulele Caravans. Boutique Air also have some Beech King Air 300s.

JNB also has Beech1900D services by CemAir and Federal Air.
Also smaller Cessna Caravans services to some lodges closer by.
JNB pretty much have all that variety of seat ranges:
12-19 seats: Cessna Caravas, Beech1900D (CemAir, Federal, Lodges)
29 seats: Jetstream 41 (Airlink)
37 seats: ERJ135 (Airlink, Air Namibia), DH1 (CemAir)
42-44 seats: ERJ140 (Airlink), ATR42 (Air Botswana, Federal, Solenta)
50 seats: ERJ145 (Airlink, FastJet, LAM), CRJ200 (SA Express), DH3 (CemAir)
66-74 seats: CRJ700 (SAX), DH4 (SAX, LAM, CemAir) ATR72 (Air Botswana, Solenta) E170 (Airlink), F70 (SAX,on lease)
83 seats: AvroRJ85 (Airlink)
88-98 seats: E190 (Airlink, LAM), CRJ900 (CemAir, Rwandair)
110-120 seats: 737-300, 737-500 (both mostly by ACMI specialists like StarAir, Africa Charter on behalf of other airlines, LAM), A319 (SAA, Air Namibia, Air Mauritius), 737-700 (Malawian, KQ)
140-160 seat: 737-800 (various), A320 (SAA, Air Seychelles, Global), 737-400 (various)
180-189 seats: 737-800 (various, mostly LowCost)

Then moving up into the widebodies with airlines varying capacity on types:
767-200 (Air Zimbabwe)
767-300 (LATAM, El Al)
A330-200 (SAA, MK, IB, EY, HM, MS)
A330-300 (SAA, TK, SV, MS, IB)
A340-300 (SAA, MK, LX)
787-8 (KQ, ET, QR)
787-9 (VS)
A350-900 (SQ, MK, ET)
A340-600 (SAA)
777-200 (DL (LR), KL, DT (ER))
777-300ER (KL, DT, QR, EK, CX)
747-400 (BA seasonal, QF)
747-8i (LH)
A380 (BA, AF, EK)

Think the only segment not really well represented is around the 200 seats mark, not really services with 757, A321 or 737-900

Then there's also the cargo variety, also from Beech1900 to 747-8F and the odd Russian in between

I have flown on a Cape Air C402 into BOS and I was considering this when I answered earlier but do any A380s currently serve Boston?

I have to agree, JNB is probably the most cosmopolitan with the widest variety of airlines.

OR Tambo International Airport Central Terminal Building OR Tambo Airport International Terminal Pier
Johannesburg - OR Tambo International Airport was formerly known as Johannesburg International Airport and prior to that was called Jan Smuts Airport.

The airport was renamed in 2006 to honour the memory of one of South Africa's national heroes and icons, Oliver Reginald Tambo. An anti-apartheid politician and central figure in the African National Congress (ANC).
Johannesburg - OR Tambo International Airport, IATA Code: JNB and often shortened to ORTIA, lies 5,558 ft / 1,694 m above sea level in the suburb of Kempton Park, 23 km east of Johannesburg city centre and 46km south of Pretoria.

Situated in Gauteng, the airport is ideally situated in the heart of South Africa's commercial and industrial hub and has excellent road infrastructure linking it to Johannesburg, Pretoria and the national road network. The Gautrain rapid rail system has had its first section opened, linking the airport with Sandton, and this will be extended in the next year to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Johannesburg - OR Tambo International Airport is South Africa's principal airport, with more than 50 percent of the country's air passengers passing through the airport.

OR Tambo Airport services airlines from all five continents and plays a vital role in serving the local. regional, intra- and inter-continental air transport needs of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. It is the biggest and busiest airport in Africa.
Major upgrades and expansion have been recently completed at the airport, enabling it to handle 19 million passengers a year. The motor car plays an important role in the lives of many South Africans and OR Tambo Airport now boasts a total of 11,500 parking bays. These range from on-airport, multi-storey parkades and shaded parking to long-term off-airport facilities, with free shuttle services offered to the terminals.
The 2 runways at the airport have been built longer then most airports due the altitude being 1,700 metres above sea level, making them some of the longest runways in the world. The air is more rarified and provides less air friction to assist deceleration on approach and landing and less lift on take-off.

It as one of only 4 airports in the world that fly scheduled non-stop services to all 6 inhabited continents, the others being Abu-Dhabi, Doha and Dubai.
