Help/Advice: American Airlines (PHX-OGG) - Phoenix to Maui

Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:05 pm

I am looking for help and/or advice from you fellow A.netters.

My wife and I will be traveling from Phoenix to Maui at the end of March, and I wanted some advice for anyone familiar with American Airlines 757 fleet.

In my rush to secure this booking, i meant to opt for the DFW-OGG flight (777), but hastily booked the PHX-OGG flight on their 757.

My questions are these:
1.) Which model (based on SeatGuru) has typically flown this route? Do they have a "hawaii" version of the 757 versus what they use on Transcon or International?
2.) Is it worth the extra money to upgrade to coach plus?
3.) Is there any meal service on the flight?
4.) Is there any IFE or just the old screens every few rows?
5.) Has anyone ever paid for a "day of travel" upgrade to first class from coach, or are these usually booked by frequent flyers in advance?

Thanks for any advice!

From what I’ve heard, they are the old US Airways planes. I’ve also heard no meal service. I’ve never flown this route so all this is hearsay. If you’re still in the 24 hour cancellation period, cancel and book the DFW flight.

I'm pretty sure none of the AA 757s have any IFE unless you're flying biz.

I also personally wouldn't upgrade to Main Cabin Extra. You do get an extra 4-6 in of space, but that's the only benefit. Unlike DL or AS, you don't get the other Y+ perks like free alcohol and premium snacks. I'm a very average sized person and I get very little value out of the MCE experience, which could cost ~$100/pp.

Thanks for the advice so far. I am really dreading the 757 flight. Does anyone know if the on-board WiFi is free or paid?

No idea on whether the wifi is charged or not, but check AA's site to see if it functions out over the ocean. A lot of Hawaii-bound airlines claim to have wifi, but it often only operates near land. If you buy it and it only works for a brief period of time, then its not such a bargain. UA certainly has this issue, and from talking with friends who have flown AA there, they may also. Best to check to be sure.

Hi, you can compare the seat map on AA with the seat map on seatguru - normally it should be the "Boeing 757-200 (752) Domestic MCE".

Unfortunately, according to AA "Meals, beer and wine Free on flights from Dallas / Fort Worth to all Hawaiian cities that take off during normal breakfast, lunch and dinner times." So no such luck from PHX!

No PTV, just LCD monitors above the seats and no 110v power ports in Economy...

Yikes! My worst nightmare come true... It's the same product as my flight on Ukraine International, except that I atleast got free food from JFK-KBP. lol.

I'll have to mark this up in my book of bad decisions made i guess. haha.

Good grief your going to Hawaii so don't complain. Bring a good book, plenty of snacks and catch up on your sleep - you will survive.

Listen to dfwjim1's wisdom - he's right. It won't be that bad. I don't mind not having wifi or IFE. A book and/or a laptop or tablet loaded with movies will do nicely, or take a nap for awhile. Just make sure that your technology is fully charged up before the plane departs, turning off any unnecessary services to increase your battery life if there aren't charging ports on-board. Then have fun in paradise!
