The above article states that 777 routing MEL-JNB took over two hours longer than a 744. Virgin soon worked out it was uneconomic.

I often observe the LAX and SFO flights to and from Singapore. They do look pretty remote. At times on FR24, it even looked as though the 2 or 3 United 787-9s flying were ganging up against a lone Singapore Airlines A350-900! :rotfl:
