What FF program should I use? (AC, LH, or UA)

Wed Mar 14, 2018 9:01 am

I am flying LAX-YVR-LAX next month on a K class Tango fare. I am trying to decide which FF program I want to use. For reference, my home airport is LAX.

I am trying to decide between Air Canada, Lufthansa, and United for the account I want to apply my miles to.

With AC, I will receive miles equivalent to 50% of distance flown. I have no points with AC and I've never had points on this account.
With UA, I will also receive miles equivalent to 50% of distance flown. I have no miles with UA now, the ones I used to have expired a couple years ago.
With LH, I will receive miles equivalent to 25% of distance flown. Right now I have about 1,300 award miles with LH.

Advice?

Unless you are a frequent flyer don't overthink it. Redeeming miles/points for flights has become harder the past few years with devaluation and fuller planes with paying pax.
I doubt that the miles you will get on a LAX-YVR round trip will make a huge difference to you unless you have more upcoming Star flights that you can pool into one account. In case of more flights on Star carriers, depending on which airlines and fare classes some FF programs will be better than others. However, if you are only asking for this trip with no more Star flights coming up I wouldnt even bother to credit them to a FF program!

I’m hoping to head to France in September so there’s a chance I’ll have another Star flight coming up.

Go with UA. You'll have the most redemption options with them (based on where you live) in the event you ever get to a level at which you have enough to redeem.
