it looks like there are two Air France flights that are currently underway from Athens to Paris Charles de Gaulle! How weird! https://www.flightradar24.com/AFR31LZ/1132316f AF1833 https://www.flightradar24.com/AFR96MP/1132349a AF1133
both operated by A319. why would they do that?? wouldn't it be better to have a bigger plane like an A321 operate the flight or at lest operate the two flights at different times?? thanks!

Air France 1133 is a Saturday service it appears. They theoretically could upgauge the aircraft just for Saturday, but it's easier to probably have the daily flight operate as planned and tack on a second departure 15 minutes later just on the weekend

2x 319 =284 vs 1 A321 = 200 seats maybe they just need these 84 seats more

It looks like AF1833 is daily and AF1133 is Saturday only. The extra seats on Saturday might be extra demand for cruise ship traffic. Why two smaller planes instead of one larger one, who knows? It might have something to do with aircraft availability.

Looking at flight history it appears both of these flights get cancelled pretty frequently.

There are wonky schedules like this all around the world. Take the Ottawa-Iqaluit route for example. There are two daily flights on this route - 1x each on First Air and Canadian North respectively. Both airlines schedule their departure out of Ottawa at the exact same time each morning at 0915.

Icelandair do this on select routes too with the only two departures out of one airport for KEF within 15 minutes of each other.

AV has a similar situation on the SAL-SJO route. They have two flights (AV627/AV637) operating with in 5 minutes of each other on most days of the week.

Double schedules are not that uncommon.

Take Icelandair with its KEF hub.
FI operates double schedules to many of its largest hubs:

KEF - AMS:
- KEF 07:40 - AMS 12:40 FI500 B763 daily
- KEF 07:50 - AMS 13:00 FI506 B757 daily

- AMS 14:00 - KEF 15:05 FI501 B763 daily
- AMS 14:00 - KEF 15:10 FI507 B757 daily

KEF - CPH:
- KEF 07:45 - CPH 12:55 FI204 B757 daily
- KEF 08:30 - CPH 13:25 FI206 B757 Thu, Sun

WOW operates similarly on KEF-CDG-KEF:

- KEF 12:00 - CDG 17:25 WW406 A321 daily
- KEF 12:05 - CDG 17:30 WW410 A321 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun

- CDG 18:30 - KEF 20:00 WW407 A321 daily
- CDG 18:35 - KEF 20:05 WW411 A321 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun

Sometimes, it seems that AF is ashamed of using wide bodies on European flights

These flights were common on HP/US during the PHX/LAS hub days, particularly to the US West Coast. Two flights PHX-LAX leaving within 5 minutes of each other. The scheduling at the PHX hub is more rationalized now as AA.

I was buying the other day a ticket from Brussels to Budapest for next month and noticed Ryanair flies on Thursdays two flights with 5 minutes' difference. Anyone can check on Ryanair.com

Daily 17:55 Brussels S. Charleroi (CRL) 19:55 Budapest (BUD) 2B
FR 8416 Non-stop Boeing 737-800 (73H) 2:00 Effective from 2018-03-25

Thu 18:00 Brussels S. Charleroi (CRL) 20:00 Budapest (BUD) 2B
FR 8424 Non-stop Boeing 737-800 (73H) 2:00 Effective from 2018-03-29

So basically on Thursdays there is a flight at 5:55 PM and a 2nd one at 6:00 PM between CRL and BUD.

It really doesn't make any sense to me. A Thursday on summer between Charleroi and Budapest (?). Any idea on why?

Could be to do with the repositioning of an aircraft? Just an idea...

Unless the DEN schedule for UA gets spread out with the upcoming rebanking I think UA will need some wingtip flights on DEN-LAS/LAX/SAN/LGA/MCO, etc, they constrict themselves if they don't have enough capacity departing at the right time for connections.
