DL to offer one off DTW-LAX on A350 July 1st

Sun May 06, 2018 7:59 pm

The source is from RoutesOnline.com

Delta adds one-way A350 Detroit – Los Angeles flight on 01JUL18
Posted 6 May 2018 13:50

Delta Airlines in the weekend of 05MAY18’s schedule update filed one-way Airbus A350-900XWB service on Detroit – Los Angeles route, scheduled for one-time basis only. The A350 will be operating as DL8803 on 01JUL18.

DL8803 DTW1920 – 2059LAX 359

I imagine this is a repositioning flight of some sorts but it is bookable through delta.com
Seems like a fun way to catch a domestic ride on this bird. I like that Delta makes these types of flights bookable instead of just deadheading the aircraft to where it needs to be. I'm trying to see if I can find a way to make it work for me and try out their new premium economy product.

I'd be all over this if not on a Sunday, bummer. It's listed as "Flagship" on the app too, with $281 coach fares, and $894 DeltaOne 1 way
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list!

Trying to work this out. Someone convince me not to spend $600 to fly this thing.
Careful, doors are closing, will not reopen. Please wait for the next train.

Nevermind. I booked myself on the flight. If you find yourself near seat 34A, come by and say hi

Wow! looks like I won't have to go to Amsterdam after all for the A350 experience! Just booked my flight to LAX! I hope to see some of you guys on board July1.

Just snagged it in first with $769.00 from FLL with connection at DTW. Would have been like $1500 one way from DTW only!

Did the 747 LAX-DTW last year. Only fitting to grab this one too

Too late now (and I booked in peasantville), but I saved about $50 booking a one way from ATL and a one way from DTW rather than booking ATL-LAX with a connection in DTW (and I scored a 757 instead of an MD-90)!

Edit: I totally misread what you wrote. Pretend I didn’t say anything.

So whose seat is the one where we have the party?

This is indeed a positioning flight for the LAX-PVG flight.

Also as this is a longer than 24 hour turnaround what A350 will operate the flight the next day or are they going back to a B77L?? If it’s daily A350 surely they will need another positioning flight the next day from somewhere as this daily flight needs more than one frame?

Looks like we’re gonna be on N504DN tomorrow. I’m jacked for this flight.

I'm at DTW for this flight as well. Been tracking 504 since it was over Barrow, Alaska.

As of early July on FR24 it appears the A350 is every other day rotated with the 77L.

I was on this flight, and was tracking it inbound also. Delta did a lousy job updating the departure time. I was planning to fly back home from LAX Sunday night, but missed my connection.

I did enjoy the A350, nice plane, very quiet. I did have a hard time finding the reading light button. It is tiny, and difficult to find (for me, anyway) in the dark. I like the new Boeing air vents, and reading light buttons better, but loved the IFE, the folding tray table was neat as well. These are small details from a passenger prospective, it is a great plane, looking forward to another flight on it already!

Overall, a great experience, well worth the extra night in LAX. You always have to plan for the unforeseen, so I did have a back up plan for the delay. I just wish I had received better information from Delta. If I can track the flight, and know it's an hour behind schedule, you would think the Delta agents could provide this information as well. Oh well, a memorable experience, and just part of life in the airline industry.

Could be worse. I saw on the monitor in the gate area after I got off that someone had a connection to Sydney and missed it :wideeyed:

Yeah, the whole situation with the delay was strange. I knew we would be late just with how late the inbound flight was. I had been tracking since early in the morning before I left ATL, and they spent over an hour taxiing to takeoff in Beijing.

I saw the missed connection to SYD also, so yeah, I feel for that person. My back up plan was much simpler.

I flew into DTW from ATL too. I was on DL1502, the 737-900. I had nearly 5 hours in DTW to find a hotel at LAX, and book another flight home on Monday. Not that big of a deal, I hope you fared much better.

Thankfully yes. All it really did was extend my already long layover in Detroit. I came in at 10am on flight 629, and I was booked home on Southwest Monday evening, so nothing really lost.

Looking around here and other places online I'm wondering how many people were actually on that flight to get someplace as opposed to snagging the rare domestic opportunity.

Was a great experience to catch the A350 domestically
Don't think Delta was being entirely truthful in the delay reason though, when I had to get my connecting flight rebooked for Monday the agent saw the delay reason was entered as mechanical rather than the "security check" or "cleaning" we were initially told in Detroit.

Interesting. I know N504DN hasn't had the problems in the past, but maybe some of those recurring hydraulic problems that have happened with other aircraft? It does seem suspicious it would take 2.5 hours to do a security sweep and clean with a decent-sized crew.

You didn't happen to be the one that missed the Sydney connection, did you?

Delta did send me an email apologizing about the delay, I assume you guys received one as well?

They did attach a survey, I filled it out truthfully. The in flight service was good, communication on the ground was bad. I did miss my flight home (to ATL). I actually saw it push back from the gate in terminal 3 as we parked at our gate in terminal 2. Thankfully I did have a back up plan, which worked out in the end.

No hard feelings towards Delta, but communication could have been better, maybe they will give me a few bonus skymiles?

They did and I took the survey as well. I think I left them a small dissertation at the very end with the good and bad. I threw in the bit of the delay being mechanical and not security related. No problem if it was a mechanical issue, but I would like to know that.

Once arrived LAX, I had to make a mad dash to T6 to catch my AS connection to SFO. I made it thankfully...and AS upgraded me to F on N926VA More To Love for the short flight up the coast. I really enjoyed the A350 on Delta...thanks to spinkid for originally posting this flight...I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

You are welcome aeromoe!

I'm so glad you guys all caught on to this and took advantage! It was a shame I couldn't join you all. Perhaps in the future. I'll keep my eyes open for unique flights.

I paid for an Emirates 380 business class one way from BKK-HKG once just to get the experience I figured I'd never be able to get on a long haul. .
