Airport special services for Chinese Passengers

Mon May 28, 2018 12:57 pm

Hi all,

I am doing a benchmark on what airports do for Chinese passengers and I need your help. I know from my home airport Munich that we have specially trained, Chinese speaking shopping assistance people as well as Alipay-service, a Chinese wifi-site and so on, since the Chinese spend so much more money in shops than other nationalities. Do some airports already have Chinese signage? I only know of apps that translate signage (AMS I think). What other services do you know of?

As far as I know, in Frankfurt they put certain shops at places within the terminal where the Chinese pass by to get to their typical gate. In Munich we try not to have the China-bound flights in the satellite terminal since we would lose shopping time with the train-ride. Are there other examples like this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Some major International and tourist heavy airport in Indonesia already some Chinese letter in the signage. DPS might have some assitance service, since there's a boom of Chinese tourist in Bali recently. I think GA also have a Chinese speaking FA (either native or not) for their flights to China.

Not related, but this is funny. I have a Chinese friend here in Sweden that is doing an exchange program. She told me that the Chinese embassy in Sweden (or vice versa) have a reminder in huge Chinese letters that said 'SWEDEN IS NOT SWITZERLAND!'. Apparently there's a lot of individual Chinese tourist that were confused when they can't find the Alps in Sweden. Many of her dad's friend is asking for her bank account so she could buy them some Rolex, Patek, or Audemars. She spent some good hours trying to explain that those are a completely different country :D

Very few foreign countries, much less individual foreign cities, have historically had their own widely recognized unique Chinese names. Most countries have to make do with something using Chinese characters that vaguely sound like what the country name sounds like to Chinese ears. There are only 430 syllables in the Chinese syllabary (English has around 22,000) so many, many words are homophones. To differentiate the sounds being "heard" you really need to see the written form. Swaziland, Switzerland, Sweden all sound pretty much the same in Mandarin. And there are many other similar clusters of similar sounding names. Mass confusion for everyone.

Plus, they also sell baijiu and Chunghwa (中華) cigarettes for the Chinese market.

Can't recall if there is signage, but Addis Ababa (ADD) had a help desk for Chinese passengers, a hot water dispenser, and free noodles for those with boarding passes for/originating from China the last time I was there. There is a lot of traffic to/from China through Addis

MSQ has every sign in Chinese. AMS is getting there slowly with some shopping flyers and tax-return services being available in Chinese.

DXB is doing a lot to cater to Chinese customers. The Dubai Duty Free has on hand 560 Chinese staff to assist customers. During Chinese New Year, there are loads of banners, promotions, and Chinese-themed products being sold to commemorate the holiday. Like, a special Chinese corner with Chinese motifs (lanterns, dragons, lots of red etc.). Bear in mind that Chinese flyers can be big spenders, buying fragrances, luxury products, jewelry etc.
Last year, the UAE announced that Chinese (mainland PRC) passport holders would get a free entry stamp on arrival. This is in my opinion a big move, as very few countries have this facility for Chinese visitors. Chinese passengers transiting DXB can exit the airport and go into the city. No one else-not MUC, or LHR, or NRT have this.
EK flies double-daily to PEK, PVG, and daily to CAN (all A380) plus flights to Yinchuan and Zhengzhou. HKG is I think up to 4x daily (3x nonstop, 1x via BKK). On the Chinese side, you have even more options, with direct flights from more obscure Chinese cities (refer to Wikipedia for more info) so bottom line, DXB is important as a transfer point, as well as an O&D destination in its own right.

Also Google "Chinese" and "Dubai Airport" and you'll find more stuff.
