Re: Out of this world upgrades and downgrades!

A few years ago I flew Biman Bangladesh CCU-DAC-KTM. When booking the first sector was showing as an A310, and the second as a DC10.

At check in in CCU I was told it was an Airbus (and free seating), but when we boarded it was actually a DC10! On the next sector, an A310 turned up! So I got what I wanted (and some long delays), although neither aircraft was planned on that sector. Sadly just a few short years later it's 737/777/787 :(

My Northwest Airlines flight segment MSP-DTW on a scheduled 757 was subbed by a DC-10. My flight to Tampa from Newark with Continental Airlines was subbed by an A300 instead of the planned 727. Just those two!

The AS website showed 737-900, got to the gate and a 737-800 was waiting for us.

Air Canada upgauging an A320 on YYZ-LGA to a B763 (sometimes Rouge) to clear up delays. Also, when AC548/9 went from an A319 to a B788 and then a B789. Between May 2016 and December 2016, that represented a 148 percent increase in capacity, from 120 seats/day to 298 seats/day (the initial upgauge was an increase of 109 seas/day); the route is currently a B789 in S18 although it was a B788 for S17 and W17. This was to add premium seats to the route, which went from 12 daily to 51 daily.

Going the other way, Aerolineas Argentinas decreased EZE-PUJ from an A332 to a B38M in May, but the route also went from 4x weekly to daily as a result, resulting in a slight increase in weekly seats.

One that was also a change in operator was TLV-JFK several times during S16, when, because of labor disputes, an LY B744 with 403 seats was downgraded to a 5K A345 with just 237 seats, or a 5K/5M A343 with 267 seats. Keep in mind that the O&D on this route is huge and there is rarely an empty seat on this route, which (combined with TLV-EWR) accounts for 1/3 of LY's business all by itself. Imagine having to deal with not only the huge number of bumps, but issues dealing with the change in operator and needing to reroute passengers. (Sectors with TLV-BCN, TLV-CDG, and TLV-LHR were also affected with this change.)

I had a DL NRT-SFO swap from a 763 to a 744. Got a row to myself.

Once in 2011: getting the 747-400 instead of the scheduled 777-200 on BKK-CGK on TG
The experience didn't differ much, since both types aren't fitted with PTV style AVOD back then.

Got an upgrade from a 737-800 to Royal Air Maroc sole 747-400 on CMN-ORY. Also got 787-8 instead of 738.

UA would often sub a 747-400 on the SFO-LAX route following multiple wx cancellations. Usually the flights were 737's.

You are lucky. This is the only AN 140 in regular service in the world currently.

On December 2007, (or was it January 2008, I didn't remember exactly) my Qantas flight from MEL to SYD was scheduled using 767 but used 747-300 instead. It was my last 747 flight ever.

Two years ago I took the trip of a lifetime to east Africa. I flew home from ZNZ (Zanzibar, Tanzania) on Ethiopian Airlines. When I booked the flight the aircraft was scheduled as a 787-8. Then a few weeks later they changed the schedule to a 767. That was mildly disappointing since I'd never been on a 787 before, but oh well. But then when we actually got to the airport, and they bused us out to the aircraft, there was a 737-800 there waiting for us. That was a major disappointment, to be expecting a widebody and ending up on a 737.

Really? Well, I guess it wasn't so bad after all. But I was really looking forward to flying the AN 24. To add insult to the injury, we were parked right next to an active on upon arrival in Kiev. :D

At least they didn't take the final step and change the 737 to a Dash8. ZNZ-ADD is quite a long flight on a prop...

I've gotten a few rando' upgrades, but the one that stands out was for simply filling out a frequent flier membership application for Etihad. The leg was AUH-CGK, so it was quite the treat.

Notable upgrades or downgrades I've encountered:
AA 763 to 738 on DFW-LAX (my first "First" class flight)
DL 717 to E175 on AUS-LAX
AA 763 to 772 on DFW-CDG-DFW (scored an op-up J to F on CDG-DFW)
