DUB-IAD EI or UA?

Tue Jun 26, 2018 1:20 am

Hi I will be flying dub-iad and was wondering which I should use EI or UA. UA is roughly $100 more.

Meh, as the flight is pretty short so service-wise, pretty much the same with both (cabin/tariff depending). If you intend to fly more on Star Alliance carriers then UA would be a good choice (for points/mileage accrual). Otherwise, I'd reckon that if you're not too keen/focussed on airline loyalty, why not choose the carrier that is least expensive. :)

EI staff are generally more obliging than UA, if you get an A330 the seating is better configured but EI also charge for alcohol on transatlantic flights.

In this time and day, those $100 saved is an instant and by far more valuable benefit then any chimaera of "free" tickets or "status". Especially if he's paying out of his own pocket.

I would easily go for $100 saved since both products are a roughly equal match-up. Also, since I can't tell if you're going round-trip or one-way, if you're going one-way only I would go a 100% with EI since you're leaving their main hub and if anything is wrong with the plane, they'll have a spare one far quicker or can reaccomodate you easily on any other TATL flight they have that day.

Are you planning to bring a musical instrument, e.g. a guitar? If you are, you definitely have to choose EI.

I'd book Aer Lingus then turn around and spend the $50 or whatever it is to get the better meal experience.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

IAD-DUB is flown on a non-standard EI A330 with inferior seating compared to the rest of the fleet, just a heads up.

Plenty of people who think they're clever have, and will continue to comment.
The reality is you're buying transportation from DUB-IAD for a few hours; you're not buying a house or choosing a spouse. So there's not much need to worry about which airlines gives 3 vs. 4 ice cubes in a drink or have green vs. blue upholstery, the experience will be pretty much the same on either airline. I'd suggest buying based on your FF alliance or preferred departure or arrival time assuming the price difference is negligible.

I really wish people would post more info in their questions:

1) what class of service?
2) is mileage earning important?
3) would you consider other, interesting ailrines (like Ethiopian) via NY?

BA777300er, it's surprising you turn to a social media forum like Airliners.net to make a simple decision on which airline to choose for a flight.

As zrs70 stated above, you didn't provide much information, such as date of travel, class of service, etc. However, from a purely generic point of view, I would choose Aer Lingus for the following two reasons.

1. If you are looking simply at air transportation from Point A to Point B, why would you pay $100 more to get the same result? Considering the cabin product is probably similar, I would fly Aer Lingus and save the money for something else.

2. You didn't specify date of travel, but it looks like currently Aer Lingus is operating an Airbus A330-200 on the DUB-IAD route while United is flying the Boeing 757-200. While this is not an especially long flight, personally I would be more comfortable traveling in a 2-4-2 widebody configuration instead of a 3-3 narrowbody configuration, for less money as well.

just my opinion. Hope you have a good trip.

I am flying roundtrip dub-iad
Outbound. 10/7/2018
rerun 26/7/2018
I will be flying economy
You said that the a330 on this route is inferior to the rest of the fleet, how does inflight entertainment compare between the two carriers on this route and how does EI’s entertainment on this route compare with the rest of its fleet?
