I think most were firm and cancelled. They even built an aircaft with intent of delivering to Pan Am.

Northwest had a rumoured A340 order? Was too young back then...

Orders that didn’t happen

Tue Jul 03, 2018 1:08 pm

I am interested in discussing the rumors of airlines ordering some type of aircraft, which did not come into fruition (not even LOI, let alone firm order or actual delivery), or at most confirmed information about negotiations that lead to nothing. So no cancelled orders please.

How about TWA' s A300s for the re-launch of transatlantic operations?
I believe the order got changed into 319s picked up by some other airline.

Does anyone have any hard detail over this deal?

More recently, Arik Air alleged order for 2 748i's and / or 2 77W's.

Republic in the early 80's was looking at the DC-10 or the 747 for service to Europe. The 757 was acquired, and shortly after that the NW merger happened so that kind of ended the chance to see a Republic widebody.

QF with the 777 maybe? They were one of the airlines that Boeing consulted with during its development, but famously were the only one of those airlines to never order it.

Ended up becoming two B789s right as Nigeria's bad bank seized them. (Bad bank - bank holding distressed assets) With the VAT elimination, perhaps Arik can make a comeback or Air Peace could assume that.

Northwest did have a few A343 NTUs that eventually went to VS.

IIRC Iran Air was pretty far along the order process, certainly farther than the other 13 wannabees.

One of the biggest was Ryanair and the A320. Airbus were ready to sign the firm order and Boeing stole it on literally the last day with an infamous deal for the 738. Remember O'Leary's comment about "raping" Boeing?

It also started off the longrunning animosity between John Leahy and O'Leary. Airbus had run a full campaign at great expense.

That is an infinite set. Rumors get discussed here every day - and it's not like this is the only place.

If that's a topic that really interests you invest your own time in research.

Malaysia Airlines was strongly rumored to have been one of the launch customers for the Boeing 777-300/ER and 777-200/LR. Rumors were for an order of about 20-25 aircraft but never happened.

The AirAsia flirt with the C-Series at Farnborough 2012 comes to mind, Bombardier even had a a CSeries aircraft demonstrator with the AirAsia logo on it.

The GE back pitch towards Emirates for a large 747-8I order, but that wasn't initiated by the airline, just a pitch from the manufacturer.

Recent never firmed LoI = Garuda 787 & A350 from 2015

AZ's 744s, built, never taken, buyed by Virgin, should be G-VROS, VGAL, VLIP, VROM, VROY.

If anyone can confirm... I did remember something, but source's reliable so and so...

I don't recall if they were actually ordered or not, but didn't Continental look into A340s in the early 90's, and 767-300s later on? I remember reading that somewhere.

Yes, EK had an order for 20 but cancelled them in favor of the 77W. They also had a MOU for 30 A333s that they never firmed.

Cubana 707. Order cancelled as a result of trade sanctions. WA leased the planes for a while.
HA A358>A338 then cancelled for the 789.
NW/DL 787.
Westair and Comair ordered the original version of the EMB-145. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_E ... Amazon.jpg Both airlines cancelled their orders.

They were also going to buy 757s and A300s, but also never happened.

They didn't really want the A345 either...although two were already built. They were leased to TAM before long and then one was broken up in Rio de Janeiro and the fate of the other is unknown. The A343 was also an interim solution.

Another NTU order was Continental for B763s (although they did take the B762s and B764s they ordered). While being built, Continental sold the slots to GECAS.

In the late 1980s before eventually becoming launch customer for the 777 - didn't UA have plans to order the MD-11?

MD-11's:
Aero-LLoyd - 2+2 before abandoning long haul plans
Air Europe - 6+12 with RB211 engines. Air Europe went bust
AOM - had upto 7 on order but fizzled after merger with Minerve
Air Zaire - 2 but went bust
B. Cal - 3, but these were not taken up by BA after the merger (built and went to AA)
China Southern - MOU for 6 not taken up
JAT 3+3 but the balkan war ensured JAT's demise
Nigeria Airways - 1. Guess what happened!
SAS - 12 but never formally converted
SIA - 5+15. We all know about this one and it pretty much killed the MD's reputation
Viasa - 2+1. Boy that would have looked good if it wasnt for the fact VIASA became a basket case
Zambia Airways - 1. See Nigeria Airways!
ZAS - 1+1, including a combi, but never taken up

Kenya Airways had the 767-400ER on order but converted the order to 777.
Delta had over 100 MD-90 on order at one point, but only took 12 iirc from the factory.
I believe Delta's 10 77L were originally orders for additional 777-200ER, but they were converted to 77L.
Air Europe ordered the MD-11.

When JetBlue was starting up, they had every intention of ordering the 737 and even spoke to Boeing. Boeing however did not give them the deal they were looking for so off to Airbus they went.

Also Pan Am had 50 A320's on order but weren't taken up/went bankrupt before delivery. TWA also had 50 A318's on order but those were cancelled by AA when they merged with them.

It was said on a.net that Boeing offered the 77L to DL at the same price they paid for the 772ER. At the time, the US3 were in bad shape after 9/11 and they were not in a position to purchase new expensive widebody aircraft. The 777 NG was new and Boeing wanted a US customer for it so the deal was an incentive for DL. UA and AA didn't purchase the 77W until years later.

Libyan Arab Airlines had 747-200s on order and even one (at least) was fully painted. However, they were not taken up due to political issues in Libya (IIRC) and Boeing sold them to Varig for a nice price.

Swissair had some A340-600 on order and was deeply involved in the Embraer E-Jet development, but SR collapsed before they could have been delivered.

Transaero had A320neo, A330ceo and neo, A380, B747-8i, B787 and some Superjets on order but they also ceased operation before delivery. Aeroflot/Rossiya did not adopt the orders after they took over their fleet. Two of the ordered B747-8i, which have already been in final assembly, have been bought by US government to become the next Air Force One aircraft.

AirAsia X had 10 A350-900 ordered, but cancelled that in April 2018.
