Airports with One Room Terminals that have Jet Service?

Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:04 pm

Hello,

 I was watching a trip report of some airport in northern canada that was serviced by a Nolinor 737-200, and it had a one room terminal only accessible by bus. Looked miserable. Out of sheer curiosity, which airports around the world have commercial jet service but only have one room, or tiny and uncomfortable terminals?

I guess you could count all those small US regional airports that get embraers and CRJs

Yakutat, Cordova, and many of the other Alaska outstations up north that see AS 737 service consist of one building/room

Not quite sure what you mean by one “room” ... rooms can be big and small. There are large, warehouse-style single “room” terminals that serve a good amount of passengers, many converted from hangars or other buildings.

But chances are any airport with fewer than 10 flights is served by a single “room,” terminal, so the number of such terminals will be in the hundreds.

Or a couple of European LCC terminals depending on how you define "tiny and uncomfortable terminals"...

HPN - White Plains, New York - pretty much qualifies. Check-in, baggage claim and car rentals are all in the same single room. It certainly has jet service. If you want to get technical it has a second room through security for waiting - but really it's all one big room.

At SBN we did have a terminal with two holding pens but that is all gone now and we have a nice spacious concourse.

I was going to say pretty much any Greek island. Santorini has 20+ flights/day just to ATH alone during peak season. It’s a one-room show more or less.

Just in Alaska, WRG, PSG, GST, YAK, CDV, ADQ. ADK, BET, OME, OTZ, BRW, and SCC are all one room shows served by AS 737’s.

What’s a little bit different about rural Alaska, though, is that typically each airline or air taxi at those airports has their own “terminal” where they own the building. It’s one of the reasons why AS airfares within Alaska are so high...they have a ton of overhead to cover.

Could you share this trip report with us? Now I'm curious as to what this one room terminal looks like.

But one that I've been to that used to meet your "tiny and uncomfortable" criteria was LSE (La Crosse, Wisconsin). The way the terminal used to be laid out was: A couple of ticket counters on the right, a baggage carousel on the left, security checkpoint in the middle. Beyond the checkpoint, the sterile area was simply a small walled-off area on the ground floor with two ground-level gates and just barely enough seating for two CRJ's worth of passengers. If AA and DL both had a flight leaving at around the same time it got pretty crowded in there.

However, looking at the terminal map on their website, it looks like they've extensively remodeled the terminal since the last time I was there, so most of what I just said no longer applies. They appear to have relocated the checkpoint and gates upstairs. That area used to only contain a restaurant and offices, but it's now been opened up in to one big concourse, with the restaurant still there but now behind security.

I would say that a large number of Allegiant destinations operate with very small terminals that are only used for Allegiant flights. Airports like GRI or USA come to mind as airports that receive large aircraft (A320's and MD 80's) but have terminals that would make regional airlines run. Even Austin with the south terminal is technically a one-room operation that was designed for Allegiant and other ULCC's

Toss STC, St. Cloud MN into the small group. After going through TSA its a big holding area. the only airlines serving there are G4 to IWA, and FLA during the winter. SY has the casino flights to IFP maybe once or twice a month.

United/SkyWest used to fly a CR2 into Palmdale. The terminal was 1 room and didn't even have 50 seats in the waiting room. Guess they didn't have high hopes of the plane being full.

How does this work when you have like Ravn Alaska, and Everts Air Charters, if there isn’t space for them to have their own area for check in, etc?

FCA. (Glacier Park International, Kalispell, MT) 1 room terminal with 4 gates, 2 ground level and 2 jet bridge. Gets quite crowded when numerous E175's are leaving at the same time.

AS and 7H co-habitate at ADQ and CDV. Other than that, each has their own building they use.

Two of my favorite airports: West Yellowstone (WYS) and Cedar City (CDC). Both airports get OO CRJ service, and the post-security area is about the size of a CRJ cabin. The nice part is that you only need to arrive at boarding time. :)

Rishiri Airport (RIS) sees a seasonal NH B735 during the summer and a year round Saab 340B service by JL (HAC). The terminal's restricted area can be seen from the outside, only separated by a glass door.

Dumaguete Airport (DGT) is also 1 room and sees multiple PR and 5J A320 series aircraft on a daily basis.

You can now add Hilton Head Island to the mix. American Eagle now flies E175s to the island as of July 5 this month and its Terminal is one room.

ITH (Ithaca) - three operational gates, one room. Though will expanded shortly. Seems to work ok and getting through TSA is rarely an issue.

It's not an airport but I believe Terminal A (MAT) at LGA is one large room with 5 or 6 gates. I arrived on B6 one afternoon and it looked like a club it was so crowded.

Was going to say that, lol! Also Tweed New Haven Airport, with a tiny little TSA section, little gate area, little check in/car rental area, and vending machines.

ZSA (San Salvador, Bahamas), and GGT (Georgetown, Exuma) are two examples of airports in the Bahamas that consist of a single building with one room for departures and arrivals. Both boast jet service (ZSA even sees weekly A330 traffic from France to feed Club Med with guests). GGT sees regular DL connection service, upgauged to 717s seasonally, along with AC E190 (again, seasonally) and Envoy service from MIA.

From what I remember (it's been a while since I've last been there) Groningen (GRQ) has one room as well, except for the shops and restaurant and toilets of course. But other than that everything is in the same room. Granted, it's a big room and not a very busy airport so it doesn't feel cramped or anything. And of course it's devided by a security line, but from landside you can see straight through it and you can see the gates behind it. There are no walls and doors inbetween.

Butte, MT has, I think, two gates in one room. Rental cars, ticketing, and baggage claim are just outside that one room. There is at least CRJ service there.

The smaller Greek island airports with international service do look like this from June to September at certain times of the day and on certain days of the week. For the rest of the year they're pretty much deserted for most of the time, with maybe 3 flights a day (all domestic) in winter. The problem is Northern European package holiday/vacation operators with in-house airlines (Yes, Thomas Cook and TUI groups, I'm looking at you). They schedule almost all their flights to a given island on one or two days a week so there are no blank days in the room occupancy in the hotels/apartments they've contracted. And then they arrange all the flights within a short time window to save on transfer buses and in-resort staff. The result is that passengers are dumped at the airport long before check-in opens for their flight so they line up outside, and if flights are delayed (which they often are as planes are in use 24 hours) conditions after security are unacceptable. Use the same airport on normal scheduled flights, even LCC ones, and things tend to be much more pleasant.

The Greek government, perennially cash-strapped, lacked the funds to extend the airports. Now they have leased most of the island airports with international service to Fraport and a 3-year plan of expansion and reconstruction has just started. But even for Fraport, raising commercial finance when the peaks and troughs are so extreme isn't easy.

A notable one in Southeast Asia is Yogyarkarta (YOG), Indonesia, which has lots of flights but can't handle anything larger than a 737/A320 and it is overcapacity
