Everyone has a "currently flying" retro jet with the exception of Delta.

Sat Aug 04, 2018 4:03 am

It's more of a statement than a question. I've noticed every single airline has a retro jet even JetBlue lol I've always wondered why Delta does not have a retro jet currently flying? I know back in the day they have the 767-200 that was a retro jet the flew for like a month before becoming a museum piece. I know they have the 757 parked out at the museum with the old widget. I just always wondered why Delta has not done what the others have done. I'm not going to lie I 737-900 would look pretty amazing in the old widget Livery. Or even a A320 with the Northwest bowling shoe livery.

Delta is all about having a cohesive brand across the board. I don't see it happening.

Has a current Delta employee I completely understand that they enjoy their brand. Even if most of us employees do not. But it would be a nice top for them to join the rest of the airline world and show a little bit of pride in their heritage.

I think Delta did end up keeping a couple aircraft with the "Northwest Airlines" livery for quite awhile...

Though we'd probably get some pre-1960s retro thing, if they ever did..... I'd love NOTHING more than to see an A350 delivered in 1980s "Widget" colors. :hearts: :hearts:

There are a huge number of airlines in this world, I would say most, that don't have a retro jet.

Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have painted some heritage schemes. BNSF is still wearing multiple schemes but has painted some freight cars with heritage logos. Perhaps DL could adorn a plane or five with heritage logos by the boarding door or the cockpit?

I am thankful DL doesn't have a retro-color jet. The concept has since become cheap/hackneyed since many other airlines started doing it. The original retro concept was to honor milestones in the airline's history (a major anniversary); or to publicize an event or occasion (i.e. the marketing partnership between the Alaska salmon fisheries industry and Alaska Airlines). But many airlines now do it just because they feel they cannot afford not to. But retro colors tend to muddle the product. So it's great that DL isn't doing much of it. I am pleased, for one, that they are focusing on their customer product rather than how they look to airplane spotters - after all, their customer product is their primary business.

Delta painted a 757 in the “widget” scheme and has it displayed in the Delta museum. Although on display, I would supppse you call it a “retro jet.”

It's kind of upsetting, even at the Delta Museum the 747 and DC-9 wear the current livery. While the current Delta livery is clean and well known I wish they would add some "color" to it. Way too white for my liking, at least American has grey paint covering most of their aircraft.

For Delta, my pick would be the Convair 880 livery.

Prior to the 1960s Widget livery, the blue was extremely dark — similar to Lufthansa “premium” blue, lol — and the red was an orange red. I actually think DL should have kept these colors for future liveries vs the overused, ubiquitous blue, red and white.

IIRC, the AS retro jet has been repainted in house colors. It world be kind of neat to see the retro livery in the front with the blue and green swoops leading to Chester on the tail.

If you think about it, the early 2000s old blue/white/red widget does represent some tumulous times at Delta. The 2001+ curved "Leo era" widget was worse until employees voted for the old widget again.

The current Onward and Upward red widget scheme is the best.

Oh, my bad, I forgot that everywhere outside the US either doesn't matter or is filled with drugs and crimes and rapists or terrorists and therefore doesn't matter. Im so sorry, I was terribly mistaken.

Delta has a retro jet from 31 years ago, it's N904DL.

And yet, it wears the current livery, which means it isn't a retro jet in the context intended by the OP.

Some airlines define "retro" as taking a new plane and painting it as if it was 30+ years old. Other airlines define "retro" as taking a 30+ year old plane and painting it as if it was new. Either way provides passengers with a sense of nostalgia.

What's funny is that jetBlue even has one and they're not even 20 years old.

I really wish BNSF would do a retro fleet...I was at the NS Family Portrait event in Spencer NC in July 2012 so I could see all the NS units at once.

In my opinion, it is pretty obvious what the OP meant. It seemed clear to me. But ... I see he is new here and he hasn't yet learned that the Anal Alices on this site are laying in wait to pounce on anyone that says, "always", "never" or in this case "every". He'll learn. :D

I recently saw that aircraft in AUA, love it! I find it interesting because, let's face it, it would only appeal to airline geeks like us ... the rest of the world wouldn't even look twice.
