Aircraft you have NOT been on

Fri Aug 17, 2018 2:32 am

I saw some threads of rare airline aircraft that people have flown on, but what about aircraft you missed flying on? I am considering aircraft that are retired or very rare.

My thoughts: you are old enough to remember these aircraft in service, but never got to fly on one, without considering things like money.

For me:
Airbus A340-500
BAe-146
Boeing 707 (saw an AA one pull in at DFW once)
Boeing 737-600 (been on all from -100s to 900s, but not the -600!)
Boeing 747SP
Convair 580s (used to see these at Fort Smith, AR)
Douglas DC-8-60/70
DeHavland Dash-7
Embraer ERJ-135
Embraer 110
Lockheed L1011 (my biggest regret!)
Lockheed Electra (was common at SNA)
Fokker F27/Fairchild 227
Fokker F28
Fokker F100
McDonnel Douglas MD-11
SAAB 340/2000
Shorts 330/360
YS-11 (used to see these at Fort Smith, AR)

Boeing 737-MAX, 737-600
Boeing 747-8, 747-SP
Boeing 777-200LR
Boeing 787-9

Does this count? I have been on a 747-SP but not actually flown it. Some years ago I was part of an Institute of Materials Management tour of PER, during which we boarded the QF 747-SP, viewing the cabin, galleys, flight deck and cargo hold (held together with Blu Tack and sticky-tape :wink2: )

I wish it did! If that was the case, I have been on a Concorde and a couple of Air Force 1s!

Didn't get on a Mercure, dammit. I was stationed in England 85-88 and easily could've gone to Paris and tried to fly aboard one. I did do a coach tour from LHR to the '85 Paris Air Show so at least I got to see many of the Air Inter Mercure frames at ORY during our visit there.

I wonder if the correct plural is "Air Forces 1" - like passers-by or attorneys general... :scratchchin:

Strictly meeting the criteria that (a) I personally remember seeing said aircraft in pax service, (b) they are now retired/rare, and (c) impossible/not likely to fly in the future.

Airbus A300/A310 (All variants)
Airbus A340-200/500
Avro RJ70/RJ85/RJ100
Boeing 737-200
Boeing 747-200/SP. (Technically I have been on a 742 as a museum piece but not flown)
Boeing 757-200
Boeing 767-200/200ER
Boeing 777-200/300 (non ER models only)
British Aeropace 146-100/200/300
Embraer 120
Fairchild Metro
Fokker 50
Fokker 70
Fokker F28 Mk. 1000/3000/4000
Mc Donnell Douglas MD-11
Mc Donnell Douglas MD-80 (All variants)
Shorts 360

Rare types I haven't flown but have booked for 2018:

Airbus A318-100
Boeing 737-600
Boeing 737-800 (sans winglets)
Boeing 757-300
De Havilland Canada DHC6-300

I'm glad I managed to log a 727-200 as a child.

I forgot about that A318, although I can't say I have ever seen one. Also forgot about the Metro (the sewer pipe with wings!).

Sadly, I won't be able to go on a DC-10 or (better) an MD-11 unless I can buy one from FedEx or UPS when they get retired.

Only "cool" plane I've ever been on is the 744.

Won't be able to get on an L-1011 either. Or a Trident.

Sticking to common passenger types flown after 1998 (you can imply the full list from my signature)
A300 - all variants
A310 - all variants
A318 (no A32X neo yet)(BA1/2 is a bucket list item)
A332
A342, A345, A346
A350 - all variants
B727 - all variants
B731, B732? (not sure, may have flown on one before I knew what it was), B735, B736, B3M8, B3M9
B747 - all variants (for sure my biggest bucket list item, partially due to urgency. Should I start a gofundme?)
B763, B764 (vaguely remember a widebody flight from 2003 when I was 4 or 5, almost positive it was a US Airways 767-200 from SJU-CLT)
B772, B77E, B77L, B773
B787 - all variants (these will be around for a while, so I'm not in a rush)
DC10, MD11
Any turboprop
Any CRJ
E120, E135, E140, E145, E170, E175

So yeah, I have some work to do!

There are plenty I have not been on. The ones that I wish I can/would have/could get on that are fairly popular or were fairly common are:

A340
MD-11
Fokker 70/100
CRJ-900
A220
A318
BAE 146
Fokker 50
Dash-8-100/200/300
737-600
737-900
767-400
777-200LR
Any 787
A380
A350
B1900
EMB-120

I was suppose to get both the A350 and A340 last year, but Finair's pilot shortage issued made my LHR-HEL-MIA trip change to just LHR-MIA.

My list includes some massive gaping holes.

Until last month I'd never scheduled a flight on an Airbus widebody! (I flew a GA A333 twice). I did fly an AA A300 but it was a change of flight on the day, was moved to an earlier flight after my 757 had a rolling delay.

So I have no flights on A380, A350, A340...also not flown a 787. Quite ridiculous really considering the 1000 or so flights under my belt.

I just fly the wrong airlines on a regular basis! I do have about a trillion 737, 747, 767 and 777 flights plus Airbus A320 family flights to make up for it. Not very exciting!

This is a very difficult question, because I honestly don't know where to start. I usually fly less than twice a year on average. My list below is far from comprehensive, as I'm sure that there are thousands of types that have been in service in the time that I started taking an interest in aviation, but I personally don't pay much attention to smaller/regional aircraft. It's the big, long haul widebodies that I remember. They are the planes that I long to fly on.

My list of rare or recently retired aircraft that I remember being in service, but never got to fly on, are as follows. If I don't include any sub-variant below, it means that I haven't been on any variant.

Concorde
L-1011
DC-10
MD-11
747SP, -8 (not sure if the -8 counts - it's rare, but still very new)

I'm going to limit my list to planes that are gone or I'm otherwise very unlikely to fly on, but were in service during my lifetime.

MD-11
DC-10
DC-9
DC-8
747-100,200,300
737-100,200
727
707 (Sort of a grey area using the criteria of being in service during my lifetime since most were retired from the big US airlines when I was very young, but some foreign airlines had them longer, IIRC. I can claim I remember the Iranian ones being in service, at least).
A300
A310
A340-200,500 (Also never been on the -600, but there are still some of those in service so there's still a chance I might get to fly on one)
L-1011
Fokker, all models
Dash 8-100,200,300
Saab 2000
Dornier 328. Actually all Dornier models
All Russian models
Probably a lot of others that I can't think of at the moment, but the are the common ones.

All Fokkers

McDonnel Douglas

Unfortunately, I've never flown on a 4-engined narrowbody. In fact, the only 4-engined airliner I've ever flown on was a PanAm 747 TPA-IAD in 1982ish. If I had my wish and could fly on any aircraft of my choosing, I'd pick a Convair 990. A Denver Ports of Call example was parked at the FBO ramp in FMY back in the mid 70's. My friend and I walked right up to it late one evening; no one stopped us...we just took a leisurely stroll around it. I loved the look of the fairings on the wings. If I'm not mistaken, it was the same aircraft that was scheduled to be flown by an African airline later in its life, but that never materialized. I'm also thinking it is/was the last 990 to exist, and that there was some interest in refurbishing it in Texas somewhere...

I once missed the chance to fly on a Varig MD-11 from LHR to GRU because I've had to change my plans and postpone my travel by a week - by then, BAs flight was cheaper and I went with them instead.

Missed on a trip on TU154 between DME and GDX because they swapped the plane and a B763 (ex-Singapore Airlines actually) was used instead.
