Ohio lost hubs

Fri Aug 24, 2018 4:56 pm

With so many airlines seeking a midwestern hubs in the 90s Ohio saw hubs by [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

Markets forces have swept away almost all of it today. But I can’t think of another state that had almost every population center with a hub and spoke network from it.

Of course it was also an era of much red ink

NC: CLT US (now AA), GSO with CO (Lite '93-'95) and RDU with AA (~1985-1995), then JI (~1996 until 2002).

Pennsylvania had US Air hubs in PIT and PHL, both of the state's major cities.

Florida :yuck:

NW-TPA
DL-MCO
UA-MCO
UA-MIA

In case anyone wants to argue about DL @ MCO.....in the late 90s with Delta Express and more recently....it's more of a focus city (hate that term)
In late 80s/early 90s, it was more of a hub.....with banks

Amazon's Prime Air briefly had a hub at ILN before also shifting it to CVG.

FTFY.
By the time MEM became a Delta hub, AA had long since reduced BNA to a spoke.

Northwest did not have a hub at Tampa. They had a flight to the Cayman Islands, and I think you could connect to that flight from Northwest's hubs over Tampa, but that's not a hub.

I think they flew from LCK to LAS, ABE, PIE, and SFB, but nothing beyond that.

At this point I wouldn't even classify MCO as a lost DL hub. Even if it's not a hub, they're connecting people to GRU and AMS, the connectivity is what classifies MCO as a contra hub or focus city.

NW had a hub @ TPA. It had 4 banks 2-northbouund, 2 southbound. SRQ, RSW, MIA, FLL, PBI, MCO flew into TPA within about a 20 minute period....they would be on the ground for about 30-45 minutes, then they would all leave within 20 minutes and go northbound. I'd like to point out that they added 2 gates to make this operation work. Gate area would be empty except for 1 or 2 flights, then all of a sudden, there would be a swarm of aircraft would show up. Then they'd all leave to their Florida points. Then those same aircraft would show up @ TPA about 90 minutes later----repeat process....and then in the evening, one more southbound bank would come in. The northern cities were I believe BOS, DTW, ORD, MKE. MSP...ATL also IIRC

I was witness to this with my own eyes.
Planes timed for connections with banks?....THAT'S A HUB

After the NW/RC merger....the TPA hub ended

PI and US also had a hub by definition in Tampa that included service coast-to-coast. It was not developed further after the 1989 merger, but was part of the original PI service that created the "Piedmont Shuttle" and "Shuttle Link" service by Henson on Dash 8's to feed flights at TPA.
MEM was originally a hub city for SO, then RC due to the merger and then on to NW. DL did not operate MEM as a hub beyond what it inherited with the NW merger and that it downsized rather quickly in favor of ATL. BNA had the AA hub created in the 90's, downsized and withdrawn as was RDU, and resurrected with same terminal space by WN to some degree in both cities, but most notably in BNA.
watch what you want. you may get it.

Ohio's population centers are all essentially medium-sized. The "3 C's" are on the large end of medium-sized, but medium-sized. Plus, they are bracketed by much larger population centers--Chicago, Detroit, Washington, DC. When there were six legacy carriers, medium-size cities could host hubs. However, once eight carriers (six legacies and the two largest LCC's, WN and FL) consolidated down to four, there was always a bigger hub into which the smaller Ohio hub could be integrated: CLE into ORD, CVG into DTW.

Dayton, of course, was a victim of the first round of consolidation. USAir didn't need a hub at Dayton after the PIT hub terminal opened in 1992--a hub which also helped end the carrier's 'focus sub-hubs' in BUF, CLE, and IND, and the old PI hub at SYR.

And, of course, even before the recent round, PIT, also a large-end-of medium population center, had lost out to PHL, and Allegheny County is renovating PIT to be more convenient as the O & D airport that PIT now is.

While DL no longer markets CVG as a hub, DL still has a focus city at CVG. DL also still has nonstop service out of CVG to some destinations that are not hubs or focus cities for DL, including AUS, CLT, ORD, DFW, DEN, FLL, RSW, BDL, IAH, MCI, MKE, LAS, PHL, STL, SFO, TPA, and DCA.
