Why? PHX Skyharbor is just fine for an airport.

I generally don't like naming airports after people, especially politicians, especially especially active politicians. Besides that, it looks a lot like the nearby McCarran Intl. Sky Harbor is fine, no reason to change it!

McCain is one of the only politicians who respects the opinions of both sides, a pretty big accomplishment. Problem is LAS is too close and too familiar sounding. Why not just give him a terminal?

As a Democrat, I fully endorse this proposal. The man is a patriot and this would be a fitting honor.

And so what if it sounds a little like "McCarren"? All those pesky Irish names, they're so damn alike...

Rename a park or name a prominent building after McCain. That should suffice.

So it can be the John McCain Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a John McCain terminal... Similar to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport which has the Maynard H Jackson International Terminal.

Something I've never understood...should have left the airport name as Hartsfield & then just name the int'l. term. after Jackson.

I'd be surprised if the city of PHX did the same. I thinking naming T3 after McCain is just fine and leave it at that. There's bound to be other things in the state that will be named after McCain...which as a poster above said...I also as a Democrat fully support it to recognize a patriot and superb Senator with GUTS.

They named San Jose Norman Mineta and he's still alive. I like the idea of John McCain being honored with the airport name.

I believe a major public venue should only be named after a person at least a decade after they have died. This gives time to assess their actual contribution and positive impact they had on society. I'm sure something will be named after Senator McCain but the rush to so is unnecessary.

T3 already is. The branding hasn't been unveiled yet (I presume awaiting his death or the opening of T3S) but it was put up on the side of the building about 2-3 months ago.

I rather like Sky Harbor. It's unique and it's instantly recognizable as Phoenix. It's old as shit too, I think it dates back to the 20s.

When Barry Goldwater died the useless Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza wanted to name the entire airport after Barry Goldwater. Needless to say the public didn't like it and wanted to keep Sky Harbor. In Columbus, OH I think they screwed up the name Port Columbus by putting John Glenn on the name. Ditto attaching Reagan to Washington National. Three airports that did't need a politican name attached.

You do know that John Glenn was amongst NASA’s original 7, had a stellar career and was an American aerospace pioneer and hero before he entered politics.

How about McCain-Skyharbor International?

I was raised in AZ (but TUS, not PHX). McCain drove me crazy on occasions, and other times, he was the absolute voice of reason and principle, then he was infuriating again. Taking all this into account, and his significant military experience, I'd give him an airport - sure, why not!

I suggest this thread is moved to the "Non-Aviation" forum, because if I'm going to list all the 20+ reasons for NOT naming the airport after John McCain, it's going to get very political!

I think we can rest assured some naval vessel will be named after him; very appropriate given that his service to our country was in the Navy.

It seems the general consensus is that PHX will not/should not be renamed and that naming T3 for him is sufficient, but...if anybody wants
to name an AZ airport after McCain, how about TUS? It's just simply "Tucson Int'l. Airport", not terribly original, so there you go!
