Longest CRJ2 routes

Sun Aug 26, 2018 8:52 pm

It looks like the upcoming DEN-MRY and DEN-STS will be the world's longest CRJ2 routes....ack! West-bound to STS is blocked at 3h10m.

Here's to wishing fervently for an upgauge to a E75 before long, at least out of STS :)

This one was pretty long. ;) Seriously though, three hours should qualify as cruel and unusual punishment. I regularly fly PSC-DEN and hate when they downgrade to a CR2, and that’s only a two hour flight.

Anything CA to Denver is pretty bad. Especially when you consider the wealthy demographics of some of these markets...especially STS, MRY, SBP, SBA, PSP

I got stuck on an IAH-MSP NW/Mesaba CRJ2 flight in 2005 (a relatively late downgrade from what was originally an A319 flight). That's 1,034 miles.

But HP/Mesa used to fly DSM-PHX on a CRJ2 for several years at 1,149 miles.

In the 2000s, there were oodles of CRJ operating flights of 1,000 miles; nothing unique here. UA still operates the ERJ on similar routes.

My personal longest:
CRJ, DL DTW-SLC (1481 Miles)
ERJ, CO, IAH-BFL (1428 Miles)
We don’t care what your next flight is.

Yup. NW had a decent number of 900+ mile CRJ routes from MSP in the early 00s. The longest I remember is MSP-ELP, which is almost the same length as DSM-PHX. 9E did have the advantage of operating CRJ440s in that time period, which was helpful on the long routes.

My personal longest was PWM-MSP when I flew the plane at Mesaba. 1136 miles!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

AA and UA/CO flew GSO-DFW and GSO-IAH, respectively, although I can't remember the exact aircraft used. Now DFW is the only one operating and it's on an E175. Both are about a thousand miles long.

Delta also flew from Atlanta to Aguadilla and Ponce in Puerto Rico, both using CRJs.

Air Canada also has various long CRJ routes. YYZ-JAX, YYC-IAH, and YVR-SAN all clock in at about a thousand miles each. The longest (although on a CRJ-900) is Vancouver-DFW, at about 1,700 miles and four hours (with an extra half hour for the return flight).

I guess with the really short cabin, it feels like you're in a tiny box. Wouldn't sitting in the very front feel most claustrophobic then, and in general really?

Come on United, you were getting much better at eliminating 50 seaters right after Jeff left and now with Kirby at the helm it's 50 seater love all over again.

That looks like a corporate CRJ jet, and since those only hold a few passengers at most, the jet is able to fly much longer since there is less weight (people and luggage in this case) aboard the aircraft.

DEN-MRY = 959 sm
DEN-MFR = 964 sm (though they also fly A320's in here too)
DEN-STS = 977 sm

They can and most of them do, but UA is short narrowbodies and has no more room within scope to add more 76 seaters.

It’s not “...50 seater love all over again.”

It’s: try out a market on a tester aircraft (in this case), hopefully stoke interest and increase demand, and eventually up-gauge to a 2-class cabin when demand warrants it. Sheesh, the lot of you want certain aircraft types launched on new routes but then will complain why it didn’t work out.
UA has shown that they’re quick to up-gauge a route when the time is right and the market allows.

God that must be horrible. Almost as bad is American flying MIA-CMH on the E145 which I like the E145 but in that tiny of a plane for two and a half hours I am alright.

When I flew the CRJ2 on behalf of Continental Express (Chautauqua) in 2007 our longest route was IAH-RIC-IAH (1,157 miles :( )...

Very long flight, even for the pilots...

We are taking 50 seaters. The only routes you mention above were served by 50 seaters were IAH-GSO and YYZ-JAX which isn't that long. The rest were CR7 or CR9.

A little off topic, but I use to operate Houston - Toronto in an EMB145XR. That was a little over 1300 miles. That was a torture mission for all involved.

50 seaters aren’t built for long/thin routes. This whole “starter aircraft” thing is silly. The CR2, especially, is going to be weight restricted every day... they’ll have to step climb like a transpacific heavy jet... you’re telling me all this hassle and that tiny cabin for 3+ hours encourages ridership? UAL abuses 50 seaters, period. Their CRJ’s, operated by Skywest and AWAC, are also among the shabbiest in the sky.

The ERJ is way better than the CR2. 2/3 of the plane has aisle access. 1/3 of the plane has a single seat. Windows at "proper" height.

No, it is 50 seater love. Most airlines, including AA are trying to get rid of their CRJ's. UA is picking as many CRJ's up as they can because they are all scoped out at the moment. They definitely are back to "let's throw a 50 seater on a route that can support a CR7/E175".

UA can add a 100 seater (A220/E190) to their fleet, and this allows them to increase their scope limit of 76 seaters up to 225. They can also have their own pilots fly E175s around all day long. They can also fly the guts out of old CR2s to distant destinations. They chose option 3.

Two years ago in 2016 a friend of mine was on a special charter flight on occasion of an event with a Cimber Air CR2 from Akureyri/Iceland to Alicante/Spain - a ride of 2013 miles and over 4 h flighttime! But they were only some more then 20 pax on board!

I would rather ride in a 737 for 3 hours than a CR2.

But I would rather ride in a CR2 for 3 hours than ride in a bus for 30 hours. The CR2 is a fantastic vehicle in that respect.

UAX flies them BNA-DEN, which is 1000-1100 miles and pushes 3 hours westbound.

I have deliberately avoided this flight and taken connections on other airlines instead to avoid spending 3+ hours in that rat jet.

STS has worked hard to get service to SLC on DL or DEN on UA. The eastbound service isn't great for east coast connections with a 4:30 p.m. DEN arrival time and the a/c choice isn't good at all but UA is so tight on E75/70s that all they had to use is the CRJ2.

I hope advance bookings convince them to upgauge quickly before too many folks are turned off by the hard product. Some product is better than no product I agree but this is a rough way to attempt to develop a new market in an area which has demonstrated it will support a good product. AS upgauged their service to SAN and a PDX flight to the E75 and is doing very well.

I know! I was on one for a little over an hour this morning flying MCI-CVG and I only got a mild case of CRJ neck craning out the window. Great flight.

I also don't get the hate for the California to DEN routes. Even LAX-COS is less than 2 hours most days, not. Bad on any aircraft. Then again I liked flying the Dash 8 from DEN to SLC and back, so maybe I just don't know what's what.

I don't see hate for the Calif to DEN routes and the east bound leg is shorter than west. Pushing three hours on a CRJ2 can be a bit tough, especially for folks who are taller than average but its better than no service.

Seat pitch is 31 inches in economy. No different than most configurations for a 737 or a320 etc. Seat widths are actually better than 737.

Worst part is the single bathroom. About that 3 hour mark and a lot of folks are eyeing that bathroom occupied sign.
