Ignorant things often said by infrequent annoyed Travellers

Tue Sep 04, 2018 6:14 pm

What are the kinds of things that infrequent passengers often say when they are really annoyed at the airline?

1. I’ll bet they canceled my flight because it’s only half-full.

2. The weather is fine both here and at my destination. But the airline canceled my flight. They say it’s because of weather. They are lying.

3. I have 31,000 miles in my account. I’m an important flyer.

4. "They held us on the runway for 2hrs"
5. People who don't understand the difference between immigration and customs (and to some extent security)
6. I don't like flying XYZ airline because all their flight attendants are rude (as if to suggest all FA at that airline are trained to be rude! Probably because one FA one time told them one time something they didn't want to hear)
7. I don't fly United because I don't want to get beaten up
8. I don't need to check this bag. I have carried it on this airline many times before and it's never caused an issue

12. "Ugh, a mechanical issue. Stupid XYZ airline is gonna cancel my flight!" (As if 1. The airline wants to cancel the flight and has a choice and 2. It would be better to fly with a broken plane)

These are all pretty good. However, the most annoying person isn't the infrequent flyer, it's the frequent flyer who thinks he/she is holier than thou.

No. 666: Airline cancelled my flight and told me I am on my own, as it was an "act of God". Well, sorry to say but God doesn't exist so it can't be an "act of God". I bet the airline just doesn't wanna pay for their screw-up.

I don't why but these two make me irrationally annoyed. I'm a member of some travel orientated pages on various sites and it's so annoying when people don't understand the difference between security, immigration, and customs especially when the answer to their question changes depending on which they're asking about.

Cannot agree more. In my work place top people bashing airlines and their employees day in day out are the supposedly loyal customers/frequent fliers. The entitlement is another level and some confessed to verbally abusing employees when they did not get their way.

People complaining about being delayed due to an aircraft going tech. It's not like airlines plan these delays - if the aircraft develops a fault, it has a fault, and needs to be fixed. When I hear these complaints at a gate, I point out I would rather arrive safely, and late, in an operational aircraft than have departed on time in an unsafe one. This usually shuts them up quickly.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

"This plane has propellers, it participated in D-day! We are all going to die!"

Heard on a flight I operated with a 6 month old ATR 72-600. We had 50 sobbing women in the back crying their eyes out because they legitimately thought they were going to die. They were initially scheduled to go with a 30 year old 737-300 from a rather dubious airline.

"Flight cancelled/delayed because of a technical issue, the airline must be unsafe".

No, unsafe is the airline that doesn't cancel when it has a technical issue ;)

13. "I'll never fly airline XYZ again. Their flights encounter so much turbolence."
14. "You have to let me pass you in the line for security because my flight is about to leave (in 2 hours)"...
15. ... but then those passengers get lost duty free shopping because they are through security and the plane will wait for them anyway.

It’s really hot in the plane, can you open my window?

Can you call my connecting flight and tell them to hold the plane?

Where is the toilet?
Oh it’s right there.

You need to push the door where it says push.

Boards a regional jet: " oh, we got the small plane today. I guess they didn't have any more of the big jets"

Heard more than once on a rental car shuttle:" We don't fly XXX Airlines anymore, they made their seats really small. We only fly YYY now" with both carriers mentioned being US big 3 airlines that have virtually the same seat width and pitch in Y.

"I thought [departure time] was when we board the plane", as they walk up to the gate after boarding has completed and the doors are closed, and get angry that they're not being allowed to board the plane. This after the gate agent paged them multiple times, and eventually gave their seats to standby passengers when they didn't show up, while they were off at the bar drinking.

I use my BA Bronze on my bag. Totally pointless and gives me nothing except a name and number on my bag in case it gets lost. Just another way to be contacted by BA through my membership number. I can understand why people do this.

I'm probably not super-clear on that myself, having never flown internationally since I'm 12.

Security = ensuring no prohibited items enter the airside/secure area.

Immigration = control of people crossing the border into a country

Customs = control of goods entering into a country and ensuring any applicable duty/tax is collected.

In some cases, such as when flying into the Schengen Zone but connecting to another Schengen country (JFK-AMS-MAD for example) you can clear immigration and customs in different countries, so it is very important to know the difference between immigration and customs.

Your flight is delayed by half an hour. Runs to rival sales counter to see if they can get a last minute seat.

Assigned seat 23B on a 737-800. Sits in 23A - oh sorry I though B meant window.

Many years ago I flew on an AI flight from BOM to HKG via BKK...plane developed a technical snag at BKK and passengers had to be deplaned and sent to a hotel for half a day....as we were getting off at BKK, I heard one of the passengers whining to a FA: "why didn't you tell us at BOM that this would happen?!!" :)

Another one I thought of...rather US-centric but anything above economy, usually business class, being referred to as "first class".

Or when people refer to flight attendants as "stewardesses", "stewards" or "hostesses". Makes me cringe pretty hard when I heard those terms used today, they seem so dated. Flight attendant and cabin crew seem a lot more current.

About two years ago I was disembarking from a Lufthansa A380 at SFO. As I passed through the premium economy cabin on the way to the door I overheard a passenger behind me comment "Wow, this is nice! This must be business class." He'd probably be shocked to see what the actual business class on the upper deck was like.

"United drags passengers off planes"
"Southwest is the cattle car airline that crams people into their airplanes"
"Check out those first class seats" - referring to business flatbeds in 1-2-1 config, though such seats would have been called first class in the past, so I understand where they are coming from

My gut feeling tells me that airlines have much fewer technical cancellations if that triggers compensation to be paid.

Calling everything bigger than a B737/A320 a "jumbo jet" and everything smaller a "puddle jumper"

Referring to the F/O as "copilot"

And of course - although not exactly something people say per se - applauding after landing, especially after rough ones. Surprised no one brought that up yet.

Applauding has nothing to do with ignorance. Many seasoned travelers will applaud to show excitement, gratitude, or well-wishes.

Applauding can happen on an inaugural flight.
Applauding can happen on a final flight for the aircraft or for a crew member.
Applauding can happen when the plane lands safely after a harrowing experience.
Applauding can happen if individuals are really happy to get to the destination.

I find it sad that so many mock applauders.
