The ones you mentioned I think take the cake... At least ANC has somewhat of a catchment area...
joeblow10 wrote:GIG/GRU to LAD on TAAG Angola is one that comes to mind...Obviously I know there are ties w/ Portuguese heritage but still, an oddball
The tag on from Easter Island to Tahiti on LAN is another, I guess there really is a market for South Americans going to Tahiti?

Texas, Russia, and Dubai (UAE) are are major oil producers. I think many of the passengers were oil industry's workers and executives.

So maybe it won't be unusual to link Deadhorse, AK with Dubai

It’s not about cachement areas. FAI and YXY are tourism areas. It’s about taking Europeans to those tourist destinations.

This is a common misconception. Tourism is Saudi Arabia's 2nd source of revenue. Saudi Arabia had 18 million tourists in 2016; more than popular destinations like India, Netherlands, Portugal or Brazil. https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/st.int.arvl In fact Saudi Arabia caps the number of visitors to be able to absorb the massive demand for pilgrims to the religious sites. And with Muslim population booming in the world, this will only can grow. And since religious tourists visit Makkah (1 hour away by car from Jeddah) and Medina, JED is their gateway.B747forever wrote:no real hub operation at JED
JED is not an ME3 but (at least from Europe) you can usually find connections to JNB or some other Asian (MNL, Jakarta) and Indian/Pakistan. I can only assume that with the new JED terminal (which at the moment is partially open only handling domestic flights) and the country trying to diversify their economy, they will emphasise that side. Certainly SV will not become an ME3, but they will probably put themselves at the level of some niche connecting carriers in the area, like EgyptAir, Oman Air or Royal Jordanian.

How many people live and work in Deadhorse, AK? Is it comparable to Houston, Moscow, and Dubai?

Answer is zero. No-one lives in Deadhorse full time. People rotate through there for weeks at a time for work purposes. I've been to Deadhorse after biking up the Dalton Highway. My understanding is there are no full time residents.

Thanks for the informative reply. I am sure they can make the numbers work on LAX-JED, as they still fly the route. I just think it is a interesting route.

You can gamble in Shreveport, LA? I knew about Biloxi, MS, but not Shreveport.

That's cool! How was the experience? I've only partially been up Dalton.
