BA Heathrow Terminal 3

Thu Sep 27, 2018 8:27 pm

I thought BA was all in Heathrow Terminal 5? Just booked flights from LHR to MIA and it lists T3 as the departure terminal. Is this right?

Perhaps they are BA/AA codeshare flights? AA operates out of T3 , but IIRC, I saw a few BA birds
at T3 when I flew out of there on VS 3 years ago

BA has a select departures from T3 due to the fact that T5 cannot handle the entire BA operation. Most flights out of T3 are those that are heavily O/D

BA most certainly operates flights out of T3, only a handful but as I recall it is mostly the low-J 744s.

PHX is also at T3 now. Made the connection to my AMS flight at T5 quite tight. The split really isn't an ideal situation and something I take into consideration when looking at BA flights.

How long was your connection, I'm the same domestic into T5, off to MIA from T3, with 2 kids :banghead:

You quite often see an A380 parked up as well at Terminal 3. I imagine this is the Miami flight.

Miami with British Airways has been at Terminal 3 for over two decades and during that period it was the only British Airways flight to use the terminal when the airline was still using Terminal 1 and Terminal 4.

Having that single BA flight at Terminal 3 also allowed the airline to be represented at the terminals management level with the then BAA, meaning that the airline had a say in the terminal operation.

Previously to moving to Terminal 3 the Miami flight was originally flown from Terminal 1.

Terminal 5 took 20 years from the planning stage then the long running legal battles to it eventually being built and completed in 2008 by which time it was already too small to accommodate all of British Airways flights under one roof hence why the airline also uses Terminal 3.

With the takeover of British Midland by British Airways in 2010 the airline gained a large amount of slots at LHR as well as the former airlines aircraft, Terminal 1 closed over five years ago and all the remaining British Airways flights were moved to either Terminal 3 and Terminal 5.

Obviously the OP is not a regular user of LHR as anyone that's familiar with the airport would have noticed the numerous BA tails at the gates at Terminal 3.

Could also be the flight to Vancouver

I'm not exactly sure. Our inbound was delayed. I think door to door we had about 1:15h. We walked fast, but the line for the busses and the ride itself took quite long. After going to the restroom and getting a sandwich at Pret, we were second to last on the plane.

Miami is an A380. I think that's the only A380 flight from T3, but might be wrong.

Pretty sure Vancouver is from T5.

The rest of the T3 flights are operated by 747's (long haul) and A320's (short haul) - there's a few A320neo's operating out of T3 as well.

Vancouver is T3 A380 ops from early May to 30SEP

Miami is operated 2 x daily on a 747 and daily on a A380 for the duration of the winter schedule (so this year it will op 28OCT18-30MAR19)

W18 BA plan to operate the following longhaul routes/aircraft from T3

A380 to MIA (BA209/BA208 Only)

Mid-J 747’s (14F/52J/36W/235Y) to operate flights to ACC/CPT/DEN/MIA/NBO(Until 30NOV)/PHX/LAS & YVR

4 Class 772ER (14F/48J/40W/124Y) to NBO from 01DEC

No, YVR is a T3 service. Will go from A380 to B744 from 1 Oct.

I wonder how and when T3 will finally be replaced and demolished? Presumably with something new north of the A4. I think Heathrow needs a new Terminal and more stands sooner than it needs another runway, though ideally both. T1 is certainly taking its time to die.

Could a new terminal (or satellites) be built near the A4/M4 spur, even if the 3rd runway is delayed/cancelled?

Last week I saw BA A380 parked exactly next to EK A380 and a B747 on the other side all in T3 , so close to EK lounge.

IIRC, this should be *relatively* straightforward outbound - Domestic arrivals at T5 just have to go up two flights of stairs to the departure lounge for T5 departures, without having to be rescreened. I'm sure I've seen signage for transfers to other Terminals at the landing half way up the staircase, so that should just be go to the Bus and get taken to T3. Admittedly the way back will be more awkward as you have immigration and rescreening to go through as well as the transfer bus.

Don't know if the domestic makes a difference, as normally that would be transit without security. There's an airside bus. Takes about 20 minutes on the bus. Depending on the time of day you might get on the first, if not the second, with frequency about every 5-10 minutes. Done it a few times now onto the Nairobi, which leaves at 12 ish. In that direction T5-T3 at lunchtime it took about 30-40 minutes all told. Reverse at 06.30 it took more like an hour, waiting for the second bus and queuing for security. But that was off of EU flights, not domestic.

I definitely didn't get on the first or second bus. More like bus five or six, and we were one of the first economy passengers of our flight to get there. Obviously this isn't always the case, but it does happen.

Yeah, I've done it a few times myself, mostly BA to AA. It's not great, but still doable. And generally I'd say that the bus frequencies are good...sometimes there's back to back buses ready to depart, so no drama there. But then the ride itself is LOOOOONG....although absolutely lovely from an enthusiast's perspective! That I am sure you will love!
I'd say, at the very least you'd need at least 65 minutes...hoping there's no delays though!

I've done the T-3 <--> T-5 transit twice and had no problems either time. I'll make the disclaimer that the first time was a bid out of the norm as we were the first arrival of the day of any flight into T-3 (ex JFK).

I asked the same question a while ago - apparently it's to keep them in one place. Hopefully when the A321neos come they'll move them to T5

If you have BA lounge access via your ticket or status you should go early and go to the Cathay lounge

Certainly is, I’m flying BA to Vancouver in a little over an hour and it departs from T3 despite arriving from Dublin on BA in to T5 - what joy it was to behold the process of transferring... Thank God we could use the Qantas First lounge because the BA offering is worse than dire.

It’s more likely the A321neos will go to T5 and the A32N’s will stay at T3, for now.
