Is there any country where domestic flying is carried out entirely or almost entirely by one manufacturer's aircraft?

Mon Oct 29, 2018 2:13 am

I was recently asked by a non-avgeek if there was any country where domestic flights were operated only with A320s, so I thought I'd extend the question here, but realistically ask for a country where a very high percentage of flights are operated by one manufacturer's aircraft.

The closest I can think of is Vietnam where at present the overwhelming majority of domestic flights are operated with A32Xs across 3 airlines, only SGN-HAN and a handful of turboprop services aren't. This will change in the future but it's an interesting quirk.

Any country we can think of?

Regards,
Martin

Airbus owns the Philippines.

There are a few old 737-200 cargo planes plying the islands but Philippine Airlines, Air Asia Philippines and Cebu Pacific all operate Airbus. Of course that jet aircraft only. Cebgo and Philippine Airlines also operate ATR's and Q400's, respectively.

There's a lot of A320s flying around Germany.

In Chile is almost the same. LATAM operates A320ceos, A320neos and A321s for the domestic network. Also Sky Airline has A319, A320ceos and A320neos as well. The newest entrant, JetSmart, operates exclusively A320ceos.

The only exceptions might be the 772, 788 and 789 operated between SCL and IPC. Also there are a few smaller airlines which operate mostly charter services using BAe 146s and 737s, but I would say that more of 95% of the domestic services in Chile are operated by the previously mentioned A32X planes.

Ireland.

The only two domestic routes, namely DUB-KIR/CFN are operated by EI Regional's ATR 42/72 fleet.

New Zealand. Both NZ and JQ operate the A320, so appart from the prop routes, domestic operations are pretty much solely on this type.
A319, A320, A321, A330-200, A350-900, A380, 737-700, 737-800, 777-200ER, 777-300, 777-300ER, 787-8, Q300, Q400

Japan and Boeing?
When no other countries around the world is going to militarily stop China and its subordinate fom abusing its citizens within its national boundary, it is unreasonable to expect those abuse can be countered with purely peaceful means.

I'd say the upper echelon of air travel is Boeing there. Except for ANA A321 NEO. But the LCC market is almost exclusively A320 in Japan.

Although two very small domestic markets:
In Namibia all routes are with ERJ 135/145 of Air Namibia and WestAir...except a daily A319 WDH-WVB sector operating as a tag-on to CPT.
Botswana is all ATR72/42 with Air Botswana

The Saudi Arabian domestic market is almost operated by A320 fleet by 5 carriers.

Exceptions:
Saudia sometimes operate A330 & B777 on certain domestic routes ex. JED-RUH
Nesma airlines operate ATR72 on short routes

Not forgetting Fuji Dream Airlines flying Embraers domestically, namely the E170 and E175.

You're forgetting the scheduled Britten Norman Islander services on Aer Arann Islands

In a small country like Austria there's already two types of aircraft in use for domestic flying. Austrian Airlines, the only airline that flies domestic in Austria, uses the Dash 8-Q400 from Vienna to Klagenfurt and Graz whilst they use the E-195 to Innsbruck.

The only domestic route in Slovakia, Bratislava - Kosice, is flown by CSA Czech Airlines on an ATR 42. That looks like a 100% score to me. One country, one route, one type of aircraft.

It seems that all or most domestic flights in Ethiopia are operated by ET Q400

J-Air is an even larger operator of E-Jets in Japan with 18x E70s and 14x E90s. In fact, JL's operation at ITM is 90% E-Jets.

NH (ANA Wings to be exact) has a large fleet of Q400s also. Throw in those props on inter-island flights both down in Okinawa and also out of NGS also.

And as PanzerPowner already mention, LCC in Japan is almost 100% A320s (The only exception is Spring Japan, which is a tiny player that never gain foothold in the domestic market. Also funny that its parents, Spring Airlines of mainland PRC, operates A320s). Starflyer is another airline that operates A320s (And they're a nice ride also, too bad their network is tiny).

75% of Indonesian domestic flights are 737s:
GA 738
SJ/IN 733,735,738,739ER
JT 738,739ER,38M,39M

If you count French Polynesia as its own country, I believe all scheduled domestic flights are on ATR aircraft.

Taking in to account ATR is one of Airbus' JV, Cambodia is overwhelmingly connected by Airbus aircraft: Cambodia Angkor Air, Bassaka Air, Sky Angkor Air, JC International, KC International, Small Planet (Cambodia). The only airline without Airbus is Bayon Airlines, and they have a fleet of 2 Xian MA60s, with more Airbus coming in....

Myanmar. Burmese airlines exclusively use ATR on domestic routes. The few jet aircraft they have are used on international routes.

I would have put the Netherlands on this list, with KLM's AMS-RTM flight (E190), but then realised Corendon flies GRQ-MST with a 738.

Speaking of which, Airbus has been a spectacular failure with Dutch airlines, far more than with Japanese airlines (JAL will have A350s in its fleet this time next year). Not only does no Dutch airline operate the A320 family, but KLM's A330-200s (PH-AO*) are not really new, and if these are retired, KLM will have a tiny subfleet of A330-300s (PH-AK*).
In grieving remembrance of the thousands of people who lost their lives on ET-AVJ, PK-LQP, XA-UHZ, S2-AGU, CP-2933, SU-GCC, EI-ETJ, D-AIPX, PK-AXC, 9M-MRD, VT-AXV and above all 9M-MRO, besides many more. Your deaths are not in vain. Safety first, always.
