Your favorite safety video?

Mon Oct 29, 2018 3:44 pm

We have had in-flight entertainment for some decades now, which means many airlines have used to broadcast a safety video before take off. Some airlines have made a pretty basic video, while other's have made it to be something a little bit different to get our attention.

I quite like the safety video on Turkish Airlines (LEGO - but I agree with Batman about the jingle in the end because it is stuck in my head as I type this...), British Airways was a pleasant surprise with Director's Cut (featuring Gordon Ramsay, Gillian Anderson, Rowan Atkinson, et al), Thai Airways, to name a few. Qatar Airways has one with FC Barcelona but it was too football-y for my liking, but that's just me.

What are some others that you all have come across in your travels? And please do share the link to it if there is one available :)

Cheers, all!

And of course there are the parodies for the safety videos which can be hilarious if you understand them. For example, here's one in Dutch.

I think the best I've seen is the NZ Bare Essentials of Safety videos from about 10 years ago. I can't figure out how to add a link, but just google "NZ bare essentials". They are all NZ employees, and all their clothing is body paint. I've never seen a planeload of passengers pay so much attention to a safety video, which is the true measure of its success. All the cast members have huge smiles and really seem to be enjoying themselves. I had one of the FAs on a flight (the blond guy) and he said they were laughing so hard it was difficult to get the lines out.

They also did some promo videos (look up "NZ commercial nothing to hide") which are even better. They were used on domestic TV. In those ads note the grey haired baggage handler. That was the then president of Air NZ

I loved the TK and BA videos, but absolutely hated TG's. TG's video from between 2007 and 2012 is still the best.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite safety videos:

MU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6p9lgOwLpg (more for the music than the quality of the video)

I found recent Qantas ones very good. A clever play on on board actions and real life situationstories. Also doubles up as anew Australian tourism film too. Interjected with typical dry Aussie humour. Second film also pretty good but first one was the best, they kept you watching and engaged.

TG's one was very weird. Feels unprofessional to some degree.

Forgive me for breaking from the airline safety video thing, but, the following German forklift safety video is seriously over-the-top:

This Air France safety video during the "France is in the Air" remains my favourite.

Simple and typical French chic.

Absolutely THE BEST safety video in the aviation history. I watched it a couple of years ago and was stunned. Unbelievably chic, concise, informative, and generally very stylish. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown (to me), they changed the music and it now sounds horrible:

My favorite safety video is any of them which are short, to the point and don't have a pile of fluff in it....get the information out in a simple format. After all it is a "Safety Video".
Any views shared are strictly my own and do not a represent those of any former employer.

I don't know. I find the current music much more calming compared to the original version, but perhaps that's just me.

Wow, that video made my night. Even if you don't speak German, I highly recommend everyone watch this. Be patient -- the first few minutes (especially if you don't speak German) are ho-hum. The rest of it -- there are no words. I started crying at one point I was laughing so hard :rotfl:

And who said Germans don't have a sense of humor...

The video just gets crazier and crazier. I'd love to see a safety video done in this manner for Ramp workers!

I was JUST going to say that!!! Some safety videos go WAY beyond reason and common sense. The famous Air New Zealand video. The "Men in Black" video (United, wasn't it?). The recent Qantas attempt. Lots of "action", girls in tiny bikinis... Yes, they do attract the passenger's attention. But they attract it to the VIDEO, not to the SAFETY!!! It's very easy to go overboard with "visuals", and many airlines do.

Of the mainland Chinese airlines, HO (Juneyao Airlines) has the best so far.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-K0VfYjteg

GS (Tianjin Airlines) also has a great video, but it has one major downside: it's NINE minutes long! :\

I agree. I consider the latest TG and TK videos as dangerous since there is no reference to the actual aircraft. How should people remember the locations of the emergency exits if they are not shown in the video or just in a stylistic way...

I'd rather airlines spend the money on almost anything else than these ridiculous videos. Put FAs in the aisles (just as they do on airlines without IFE), within three minutes they'll be done.

(TK - among others - has a habit of taking off during the encore presentation anyway. For example, those "we are turkish airlines, we are globally yours" skits took forever...)

Granted, many safety videos don't effectively convey necessary safety information. Unfortunately, my FA friends tell me that at best, 30% of passengers are actively paying attention to them during the safety briefing. Seems like humor gets people to pay attention more than anything so with that said:

Like them or not: What are some of the funniest safety videos you've seen?

Can you sort them into 'bare-bones' and 'over-the-top' safety videos? I, for one, have just seen one (from within an aircraft, that is): AI. That is as bare-bones as possible.

And literally so - I love looking at the stick figure passengers march out of the plane during emergency as if it was an order from the Commander In Chief....and that 787 nose wheel though! :P

Seconding Air France. Just very cool and couldn't be more French if it were a beret toting baguette smoking a cigarette. I love it and completely rewatchable so you actually pay attention every time.

The BA video got a mild chuckle the first time, but man that humor gets old VERY fast. It's very hard to have humor work for repeated viewings.

Get me hard to think about LGBT-rights in QATAR! No wonder QR is flying to Mykonos... :duck:

Back to the topic, best safety video for sure, MGM Grand Air DC8! Note "The Service Request Button", NOT just a flight attendant call bell!
