Terminated AF destinations

Wed Nov 14, 2018 6:52 pm

As I am doing a little bit of research on AF, I'm trying to gather infos on former AF destinations.

I know there is a list on wikipedia but it is far from complete; some example of former AF destinations that don't appear on this list are AUH, AVN, BEL, BVE, DND, EIN , FMO, GNB, GRQ, IOM, JER, LUX, NGO, PAD, TRS, UIO (restarting soon with JN).

So my question is, which cities where at one point served by AF (including it's regional offsprings) but aren't anymore ? Thanks to all.

MVD

AF flew there as a triangular route. CDG-MVD-EZE-CDG.

My only flight on AF ever was MVD-EZE 3 years ago.

AF flew to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta for several years in the late 60s and early 70s. ORY-JFK-GDL-PVR. GDL is still served as a cargo route.

PNH was inaugurated in 2011, becoming only European route flown from Cambodia to Europe non-stop. The route only lasted a couple of seasons.

BEG was discontinued back in 2005 I think. AF said that despite good loads they couldn't make any money with their cost structure. They signed a code-share agreement with JU which took over the market.

CVG was a good catch. AF flew an A340 into there.

Is that the only US destination dropped by AF? SEA was dropped, but recently resumed.

KL served MEM, but I don’t believe that AF ever did.

Correct. The route operated with a A343 and 772. I wouldn't be surprised to see PNH return to the AF network via Joon. Cambodia is a growing market and is quickly becoming a popular tourist destination. When I visited Siem Reap in 2015, I couldn't believe the amount of Europeans I saw there, especially families. I saw countless Dutch and French families with young children...including a couple young European parents with what looked to be newborns visiting the ruins with babies in baby carriers and slings....not exactly the type of place I would take a newborn but to each their own.

Doha used to be served twice weekly with A319. Obviously it couldn’t compete with Qatar Airways

First destination I thought of was PNH, for sure. It was a very unique route all the way to Europe from there. As a former French territory the historical knots are there. Quite realistic they will put it back. Makes sense it could be added under the Joon brand. However, the plane needed for that isn't probably the A340 if they want to enhance an efficient operation. Rather fly there with the 787.

There were 2 CDG flights one Air France and one Delta.

BSB, despite the heavy presence of the group in the country, was also dropped in 2016.

I think nobody has mentioned Valladolid, Spain (home to a Renault factory) to ORY which was dropped in 2009:

Not that long ago. OVD was dropped in 2012 and VGO in 2015. Both routes were subsidised in one way or another.

A thin route cut at the peak of the Brazilian crisis. I imagine when Brazil recovers, this route could come back.

KUL is interesting because the first time they served it, it was due to the merger with UTA and it was quickly cancelled. The second time they tried it in 2012, they lasted around 3 years before ending it - although they should have waited a bit longer since MH pulled out of CDG only a few months after they left.

On the other hand, sister company KL is doing great in KUL. I guess AMS is the perfect starting point for Malaysians to get around Europe as opposed to CDG or FRA.

Hey guys,
Add Sydney to the list...
UTA used to fly into Sydney and when Air France took it over, Sydney was retained for a little while before being dropped. At the time, the UTA colourscheme was one of my favourites flying into Sydney.
I remember the AF 747-400 with the experimental colourscheme featuring the silver cheatline seemed to be used a lot on the Sydney route.
Cheers,

AKL was in a similar boat to SYD, served by UTA for years then briefly 1-2 years by AF around 1992-94 before being dropped, I remember seeing an AF 744 no idea of the routing, NRT-NOU-AKL-PPT? 1-2 weekly I think.

EIN is a former AF destination. From 2005 to 2006 they flew EIN-CDG, which was operated by AN on the ATR42. From 2011 to 2013 they flew EIN-MRS on the A320. The MRS route was closed due to heavy competition from FR, but in 2012 I was lucky enough to fly it on AF. FR still flies this route today.

CDG is still missing from EIN, has not been served since AN pulled out. It would be a great route for A5 or HV.

off topic - but some insight into this observation: there used to be a flourishing surrogacy program in Cambodia (harder since 2017), so I wouldn't be surprised if those children weren't born in Cambodia (as my son was) and the parents were killing time in REP while waiting for all the official paperwork to be completed - taking newborns around in slings and tuktuks while living in hotels/serviced apartments provided some unusual parenting experiences ;)

You can add ARN to that list from summer schedule 2019. The 3 daily services will be replaced by Joon, and they will further add a 4th flight.
Although technically it is owned by AF it is not really AF. This will end pure AF service to ARN after many decades.

True, Air France has served Jakarta in the past with the 777. Found pictures of a 777-200 in 2003 and a 777-300 in 2015.

While searching for this, I also came across several photos of an Air France Concorde in Bali in 1988. Given that they no longer fly there I'd say this is a terminated destination as well, however I assume this was a one-time flight.

Hey PatrickZ80,
I believe that the Air France Bali Concorde flights around 1988 were charters. We saw some here in Sydney as well. We tended to get more Air France Concorde charters I recall than we did British Airways ones.
