What aircraft is a good start?

Tue Nov 27, 2018 2:38 pm

I have been thinking (read dreaming) of starting my own airline based in my hometown Gothenburg, Sweden (GOT). There is no airline with hub in gothenburg, hence domi use it for my example. The airline would have focused on commuter routes in the morning and during the day, and some leasure destinations on the evening. What aircraft would be the best to operate given the circumstances.

Either of theese:
E-jets, A220, A320(Neo aswell), 737, Crj.

The 737 and the A320 may be too large to fill, and as the airline would be new, they would benefit from having more aircrafts rather than a few large ones.

And for those long, thin routes the 747-8i.

I would suggest to start with a fleet of Airspeed Horsa's. This will keep your fuelbills low, and these planes are able to haul cargo as well as passengers.

Use the google: look at the thread's named "want to start my own airline".

To summerize it:

- If you don't have a bunch of cash you want to lose.
- Have no prior CEO-level experience in a large airline
- Don't want to make a fool of yourselve.

Dont do it.

How nice can be our fellow a-netters some time.... let the guy dream. It could be an opportunity of some community work to build an airliners.net collaborative business plan. We have people that think they’re airlines knowledge Gods for what I’ve seen lately when it comes to other people management judgement. Well put your knowledge at work and show us what you can do!

Take Volotea as a similar example. It seemed a crazy idea but who would have said that they’re performing quite well!

I know, but I bet the people behind Volotea didn't ask "what plane should I use" on airliners.net .

Ofc im not thinking of starting an airline, i was just looking for someone with knoledge on how the AIRCRAFTS performed, and how they stack up against eachother in cost etc. But i understand that people want cheap goals to seem knolegeble enough to discourage someone on the internet from starting an airline... how typical.

I think a majority of us have had a dream of starting our own airline. And believe it or not, a few members on this page have actually done it! If I had the money, I would be knocking on the A220 door personally. I mean, it would fulfill my starting point and meet the criteria of routes planned. Of course, it really all depends on the startup money. In that case, I would be lucky to even get a Cessna 150 at this point! LOL!

If he's thinking commuter routes my thought would be to go with the Embraer type commuter aircraft. I suspect even the A220 might be too large for what the gentleman has in mind. A market analysis would provide a basis upon which to do further planning. For what it's worth, incredible dreams have resulted in some incredible achievements, where courage, resourcefulness and determination came boldly together.

Probably something like an atr or a Saab 2000 for commuting . Second hand planes much cheaper for a start up . You also don’t need the utilisation quite so much . Leisure destination would be fine on a old 737 800. Pretty reliable and sturdy

I'd start with an ATR 42/72 initially and as the airline develops with more routes and frequencies I'd introduce the Embraer E-2 family as with a single jet family you can cover the 80 - 150 seat market.

While true, his/her initial approach was similar strategic wise. And I think a lot can still be done in this niche. And you’d agree with me that if Volotea did so, people would have gone nuts...

This seems the best choice for more economical operation.

The OP could at least gave some suggestions as to where he would like these commuter jets to actually fly to rather than ask for the best aircraft for flights out of GOT.

The actual question whether it's a dream or not is extremely vague, if he really wanted to find out he could have Googled it or least gone to the aircraft manufacturers website for the the information that he is asking.

Too many people head straight to airliners.net to ask questions when the answers to those questions can usually be answered in a more professional way by searching elsewhere online!

Airliners.net is not Big Brother :-)

I would start with the ATR 42-500. This is more than enough for domestic Swedish flights, as well as Copenhagen and Oslo. They are dirt-cheap to operate, and leases should be low.

As the airline grows, cheap second-hand Embraer E170 or E175s, depending on what is cheaper. These will also allow you to do stuff like charter and extradition flights. E190s will eventually allow for further seamless growth.

I would put a heavy focus on ACMI and contract flying. Make sure to have some interline agreements with airlines like SAS and KLM to help fill the flights for you. Even better, get a contract to operate aircraft for a another airline.

AWK and C-101 are excellent choices.. (And if you buy the HAWK it is very easy to fly as it has an easier flight model so you can get up to speed very quickly.) Then once the advanced flight model is finished you will receive the newer update for free so it is kind of like two planes for one.. This would allow you an easier plane to get the feel and then the more advanced flight model down the road once you are better used to things..
