Weirdest Connections You've Ever Made

Tue Nov 27, 2018 3:59 pm

Hi all.

I think there isn't a topic on "weird connections," and I think it's an interesting and fun subject. I'll start.

My family once flew STL-ORD-FWA-CLT on AA to get to a meeting in Charlotte. Keep in mind, AA has some STL-CLT nonstops, but those were obscenely expensive. For whatever reason, the tickets through Fort Wayne was super cheap, so we booked that. I wonder if anyone else has connected through FWA or another small regional city.

Also, a colleague of mine flew STL-ORD-COU for a few months. Keep in mind, Columbia is a two-hour drive from St. Louis, and these flights (on UA) were pretty expensive, and usually were around 4 hours with the connection. Yet he kept shelling out the money for this until his partner moved from Columbia to Memphis, at which point he started flying Air Choice One nonstops to Jonesboro, TN, and has been using those ever since.

Do any of you have weird connection stories? I'd love to hear them. Please list the airline, departure date, and airports, although additional info is certainly welcome.

I once did ORD-SJC/SFO-MUC-FRA, simply to ride on LH's A346 when they were brand new. Totally worth it back then.

In terms of connections in small cities I once flew MDW - CMH - BOS on WN which was $2 cheaper than the nonstop flight. I just did it because CMH seems like a place I'd never go again. A week later I did DCA - ORD - LHR - TXL - FRA - YYZ - SCL on AA, BA, LH and AC because it was cheaper to go this way than to fly from IAD or ORD straight to Chile. Was a fun trip!

I flew DFW-JFK-LHR-TLV (kind of a standard routing if you can't catch a nonstop DFW-LHR, but the return was TLV-LHR-LAX-DFW, which was kind of weird (but it did give me a few extra frequent flyer miles).

It was a busy time trying to get home from MDW to PHX. Using apps, I found that I could get home as followed via Southwest

MDW to SDF to BHM to BNA to PHX. The crazy thing is that I only had to change aircraft once. The first two legs were same flight number. Then the BHM to BNA was using same aircraft. Finally we landed early in BNA where I made a late PHX flight. Took me only 6.5 hrs to do whole trip.

Also when I was dating my wife, I was working for pinnacle at the time. I used my benefits to fly SGF to MEM to MSP to DFW. DFW is only about 7 hours away by car.

Then when she worked her first flight as a FA, I flew her first route BWI to PVD. Then flew on my Northwest benefits home. Flew PVD to CMH to MEM to SGF.

Finally on the Dallas return trip I flew DFW to DTW to MSP to MEM to SGF. The joys of NRSA :)

FRA to MUC via SKG comes to mind. It was a convenient schedule and only 78 euro's on Aegean!

I'm using up Aeroplan points, and taking a series of fun trips: flying just for the heck of it, going out of my way to maximize the aircraft / airline / airports that I get to experience!

So... I'm going from Toronto to Ho Chi Minh City for a weekend, to see how the local Pho stacks up to the real thing: YYZ-YUL-PEK-SIN-SGN, returning SGN-BKK-PVG-VIE-YYZ. Fun times!

Not quite a connection, but a weird direct flight, in 2017: TUS-LAX-HOU on WN. Same flight number. Flying LAX-HOU I was on the right side of the plane, looking down at my home town as we flew over the Santa Catalina Mountains. Easy to spot TUS from which we had departed around two and a half hours earlier.

Recently, YYZ-PVG-BKK-HKG-AKL, cause using miles and that was the only route to get J the whole way. Similar on the way home, CHC-MEL-BKK-TPE-YYZ. Could have had enough time to leave the airport in TPE, but I was just exhausted at that point.

just this year, I went BOS-MSP-AUS on DL because my original flight routing, a more sensible BOS-JFK-AUS got cancelled due to weather. hard to fathom going to MN for a trip to TX, but oh well.
That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

I once did an SNA-SFO-ORD-BZN trip, which was actually the fastest way to do it given the time of day, season, and some operational issues some other carriers were having.

Must have been a while ago. I think there were flights from SFO to SJC some time in the past, but I can't imagine that's been the case at all recently.

Ah yes, the 'take a 1-stop for extra PMQ' approach.

Definitely over-used that taking GRR-ORD-EWR and YYZ-YUL-EWR instead of the non-stop options.

As for general connections, I remember taking a family trip to Florida in the mid-90's from NY on Air South (or South Air or something like that), that I think went JFK-ORF-CHS-ATL-JAX or something like that.

MIA - ORD - SJU
This was as a non-rev due to crazy loads on MIA-SJU. At least I got to meet the previous governor of Puerto Rico on the ORD-SJU leg.

MIA-MVD-EZE
Nothing too crazy about this but I did have the unique experience of a 20 or so minute flight on an Air France 772 across the river plate. It's the only flight on AF I've ever taken.

I went the long way around the Earth once and flew GRR-DTW-KIX-BKK-DAC, then later on to CGP, in order to avoid LHR and earn Gold Elite on DL. Return trip was DAC-BKK-NGO-DTW-GRR.

My grandparents flew BNA-DFW-FRA on DL in 1985, which was way out of the way. More recently, I changed my BWI-ATL flight by a day and got on BWI-DTW-ATL on WN where I was able to stay on the plane during brief layover in DTW. I've also been offered oddball ATL-RDU-LGA and ATL-PIT-LGA connections in the past where they presumably had some extra seats similar to another poster's FWA connection between ORD and CLT.

Not particularly complex but not that normal. I've connected at both MCO and MSY when flying between ORD and MIA on AA.

Also, done IB to CX at both AMS and CDG between MAD and HKG.

TPA-SDF-STL. Just strange to connect in SDF (even if it was on WN). This was 10 or 15 years ago.

Was booked for work travel from Atlanta to Cincinnati ... didn't pay much attention, just drove to the airport, checked in, got on the plane.

Was a little surprised to be woken up, upon landing, and hearing "Welcome to Gulfport!" ...

Yep, work had booked me ATL-GPT-CVG ...

A few years ago, probably around 2002-03, I flew from Dublin to Jersey via the Isle of Man (IOM) and LGW. Three flights; one was an ATP and I think another was a BAe 146-100, both fairly rare types.

One I thing I like about weird connection is the bag tags; I have a corkboard at home with 2 and 3 sector connection bag tags pinned to it; makes a nice display!

SA flying will have you doing some gnarly routings to get home. I once managed SEA-HNL using the following routing. One way rental from SEA to drive to PDX. Then PDX-ORD-LAX-KOA-HNL. I’ve also driven from DEN to LAX in a night in order to get a seat on LAX-KOA-HNL.

Flying as a nonrev you do a lot of them.

My most elaborate was SNA-DEN-OMA-ORD (my backup was SNA-DEN-FSD-ORD)

It's nearly impossible to nonrev between DEN and ORD on UA, so connections in OMA, DSM, FSD, LIT, SGF, LNK, MLI are all extremely common to have to do, anywhere where fares tend to be high and thus loads aren't 100% full all the time. Some of the flights are even same aircraft. For example my friend flew ORD-SGF-DEN all same a/c and the agent in SGF was waiting with his boarding pass to DEN when he got off the plane.

I've done OMA-DFW-ORD-TYS on AA just to get on a 772.
Also, OMA-ORD-DFW, AA to get on a 788.
OMA-CLT-DFW-GRK, AA because I had time to kill and I like to go up and down a lot...
DL bumped me in SLC so my route was LAS-SLC-ATL-OMA.

If it's just me, I'll go around my elbow to scratch my nose every time.

I've done that with MDW/ORD, and also within IAD when I wanted to get there on WN but go onwards to Europe on UA. All for personal travel in my cheaper days before I had all of the miles I do today.

Many moons ago I flew LPA - LUX - AMS - JNB - CPT just because KLM still allowed smoking onboard (And of course to fly the B74M). Unlucky for me they changed their policy during my stay in ZA. That was a bummer.

Now I regularly fly BER - LYS to visit family in the Provence and as SXF - LYS nonstop with FR is of course way too boring for any real Anutter I so far connected in CDG ( also to fly A318), ZRH, AMS, FRA, VIE and DUS. Looking forward to many more options as I can arrive in MRS too.

Used to be pretty common in Cincinnati, but I flew DAY-CVG-ATL-MCO on numerous occasions to save money over a direct CVG-MCO. I know many people from CVG routinely flew IND/DAY/CMH/SDF/LEX-CVG-XXX to avoid Delta's high fares in Cincinnati.

I also have done LAX-SFO/SEA-CVG on Delta. The check-in agents got a kick out of me connecting in SFO on Delta, but there seemed to be quite a few people doing the same thing. I almost took CVG-MCI-LAX on Delta as well, but the nonstop price went down before I bought the ticket.

Many years ago you could get some really "doozey" routings from AA.com using their multi city feature.

I once flew STL-CLE-CVG (on Continental) then CVG-ATL-LGA on Delta, one ticket, for $125 one way. The return was $89 and was LGA-CLE-ATL on Continental, then ATL-CVG-STL on Delta.

All one ticket, all booked on AA.com

Check in was at the AA ticket counter.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

SLC-LAX-LHR-SVO-KBP on DL/NZ/UN as a student in order to get the cheapest possible route, with the bonus of catching a NZ 744.

When I lived in BZN and had limited connection options I did some unique domestic trips, especially when the destination was another small city:
BZN-SEA-MSP-BMI/SPI-ORD-MSP-BZN (for business in Champaign/CMI area)
BZN-MSP-JFK-SYR (for business in Ithaca/ITH)
PHL-DTW-SEA-BZN (Coming back from business in PHL. I usually went PHL-MSP-BZN. I don't recall why I had to take the long route this time, but I did it.)
BZN-MSP-LGA-YYZ and return (This was much cheaper than BZN-MSP-YYZ, and it also got me onto the WS 737-600.)

Also a few international trips where more direct routes were available, but I chose to take a more interesting itinerary. These all would have required at least a double-connect, but I chose to go triple-connect to catch new airports, airlines, and/or aircraft types:
BZN-SLC-YYC-AMS-HAM / CPH-AMS-YVR-SLC-BZN
BZN-MSP-ORD-FCO-VIE

Ticket construction was obviously different, but earlier this summer I functionally connected in ICN to get to ICN (SFO-ICN-HKG-ICN) due to far lower fares to Hong Kong and allowable stopover in Seoul.

I've also done a three-stop itinerary from Chicago to St. Louis with NW in the mid-2000s, ORD-MSP-CLE-DTW-STL. Mostly a "why not?" situation, but obviously did pick up more miles.

My really good buddy lives right around the corner from MDW and only flies WN. I live in MKE. He somehow booked a WN flight from MDW to MKE which isnt even possible by connecting through DTW.

He called me and told me he was here I thought he was at the Amtrak station at MKE. I was waiting there for like 30min when he called and said where are you? I told him im outside been waiting here for half and hour? He then said he was at the airport.

The dumbest thing I have ever seen someone do. This guy has lived in Chicago his whole life and never realized that MKE is a hour and half drive, hour train ride.

I did ROA-ORD-ARN-BKK one time in order to get to BKK on an award ticket.

We had an 8+ hour layover in ARN, so we brought heavy winter coats to explore Stockholm (it was January) that were really quite unnecessary once we got to Bangkok.

Last year I had to get to Nashville for a class during one of the Country Music festival weekends and the nonstops from NY/NJ were brutal ($350+), so I flew nonstop on UA from EWR-ATL for something like $78 one-way and then took the Boutique flight ATL-MSL-BNA which I think was $102 one-way. Interestingly, the 4B flight was full, and all but one of the pax on board the PC-12 were flying through to BNA. The flights were operated by the same plane and crew but with different flight numbers, so we all deplaned in MSL, stretched our legs for a few minutes, and re-boarded. Who would have thought of Muscle Shoals, AL as a connecting city!

On a number of occasions I've taken "the long way home" from BNA by flying BNA-SFO-EWR with the SFO-EWR redeye, though my favorite was one time I really needed to get back for the next morning, and the only way to do so was to fly BNA-IAH-DEN-IAD-EWR with the DEN-IAD as a redeye. It only got me in 2 hours before the morning nonstop, but got me to my nephew's baptism (barely) that I would have otherwise missed.

I've also had a number of interesting IRROPS routings, such as BOS-EWR-GLA-CDG during a nor'easter when the BOS-CDG nonstop was cancelled.

I once flew TLV-EWR-ORD-BDL ... nothing like flying over your final destination and then turning around to reach it!
