Have you flown the alphabet?

Tue Nov 27, 2018 11:14 pm

A few years ago, we did the same thing as the airport thread, but for airlines. So, with no further adue, I'll post my updated airline list. Rules are IATA codes of the operating carrier only. Feel free to post yours! I might have forgotten a few as I did this by memory, but it seems I'm only missing R so a trip to AMM or OTP might be in order. ;)

A: AA AB AC AF AI AS AY
B: BA BE BT BY B6
C: CA CC CL CX
D: DI DL DU DY D8
E: EI EK ET EW EY
F: FI FL FR
G: GA
H: HH HV

V: VY

Goodness, Sveinn! You're keeping me up here since it's midnight as I'm writing this.

New airlines which I flew this year are in bold, while upcoming airlines are in (parentheses).

A: (AC), AF, AM, AS, AZ
B: BA, BE, BR, BT
C: CA, CO, CX, CZ
D: DG, DL
E: EI
F: FM
G:
H: HG
I: IB
J: JN, JT
K: KE, KL
L: LH, LO, LX
M: MA, MU
N: NK, NW
O: OA, OU
P: PC, PQ, PR
Q: QX
R: RO
S: SK, SQ
T: TG, TZ
U: UA, US
V: VF
W: WN, W6
X:
Y: YV YW
Z: Z2
#: 2P, 3K, 5J, 6K

Connection carriers (United Express and Delta Connection, in my case) aren't listed above. Unlike my airport list though, my airline list has less variety, and I'm missing both G and X. Maybe I'll get to fix that at some point. ;)

Well, I've got my ABC's covered, but not that many others.

AC, AF
BW
CP, C6
PV
QK
WS
9A

And a US Regional during IROPS, I don't recall which.

New airlines since the last time we had one of these threads, which appears to have been 2 years ago, are in bold. It looks like I've added the letter H this year.

Ok, I have a list like that too, but I use different rules for my list:

2R, 4M, 4U, 5C, 5L, 9W
A5, AA, AB, AF, AM, AR, AS
BA, BD, BE, BM, BT
C9, CB, CX
DD, DE, DI, DK, DL, DY
EA, EI, EK, EQ, EW
FH, FI, FR
GL, GU
HF, HG, HP, HV
IB, IJ, IT
JJ, JK, JQ
KF, KL
LA, LH, LO, LX
MA, MP, MX
N6, NH, NT, NW, NY, NZ
OA, OK, OL, OS, OT
PA, PM, PU, PV
QF
RA, RZ
SK, SN, SO, SP, SQ, SR, ST, SW
TA, TG, TK, TP
U2, UA, UK
VG, VY
W1, WF
X3, X8
Y -
Z -

In my list I didn't care who actually operates the flight. If I booked an EW flight and end up on an AB, 4U, OK or whatever airplane, it is still EW for me. Only for codeshare flights like HAM-LHR-IAD booked as UA I listed HAM-LHR as LH (which it actually was). KLM Cityhopper appears as KL in my list. And all the incarnations on Norwegian or Easyjet appear as DY and U2.

Short list for me, most of the alphabet is missing. I usually stick to the same airlines.

A:
B:
C:
D: DE, DY
E:
F: FD, FR
G:
H: HD, HV
I:
J:
K: KL
L:
M:
N:
O:
P:
Q:
R:
S: SK
T:
U: U2
V: VY
W: W6
X:
Y:
Z:

Just like others, this is the name of the main airline. In some cases the flight was operated by a subcontracter like KL was operated by KLM Cityhopper. I've never flown KLM mainline.

HD in my case stands for Air Holland, a long defunct airline. This code is currently in use by Air Do, but I've never flown them.

My list. Quite a few of those actually only operated for another airline as sub charter or wet-lease, but I still wrote that specific operating airline instead of the organizing airline.

Living in Ireland makes this more awkward than it should be, relatively poor range of airlines for some time (due to strength of FR and to a less extent EI) is only being corrected now; plus I haven't flown around North America much - usually in and out on EI or KL.

A - AY
B - BA, BD, BE, BT
D - DY
E - EI
F - FR
K - KL
L - LH, LM
R - RE
S - SK
T - TP, T3

All non-Indian airlines on my list are AirAsia airlines.

6E
9W

AI, AK
DN (Air Deccan and then Simplifly Deccan)
FD
S2, SG

The end.

BTW, can you explain some of the not-so-obvious codes? Such as...

MG: MNG Airlines (pax-flights suspended years ago, today cargo only)

There is a list on Wikipedia you can refer to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airline_codes
May not be complete or up to date though.

T3 = Eastern Airways, UK regional carrier who operate under BE codes currently

A nice new thread and a new list - thanks to the OP for starting it.

C - CZ

U - U2 UA UK
V - VN VS
W - WE
X - XO
Y - missing
Z - ZB
and one airline I couldn't find a code for Lloyd Aviation, an Australian airline that flew me to Kangaroo Island.

Sadly many of these are now defunct, but not forgotten :-)

If I listed the airlines by name rather than by code the missing letters list increases to 6 - H,P,W,X,Y, Z.

Still a few gaps for me

A: AA, AC, AV
B: B6, BA, BD, BE
C: CO, CX
D: DJ, DL, DP
E: E7, EK, EY
F: FJ, FQ, FR
G:
H: HA, HP

Q: QF
R:
S: SI, SQ
T: TW (TT)
U: UA, US
V: VA, VN, VS
W: WP, WW
X:
Y:
Z: ZB

9K

Here WW refers to bmibaby and not WOW.

I have listed DP, MT and ZB by their IATA codes but all flights taken on those airlines were marketed under their ICAO codes AMM/FCA, JMC/TCX and MON.

I've listed all airlines by the marketing carrier and not OO, ZW etc. The regional carriers I do know I've flown on are SkyWest (DL), Skywest (VA - prior to the VARA takeover), Sunstate (QF), Eastern Australia Airlines (QF), Cobham/NationalJet (QF), ExpressJet (CO, UA), Air Wisconsin (US), Chautauqua (US), PSA (US), Mesa (UA), British Regional Airlines (BA), BACitiflyer (BA). There was a flight on United Express that I just cannot remember who the operating carrier was.

I've never flown a mainline flight on JL, NZ or TW, and flew on JALways, Mount Cook Airlines and Trans States Airlines respectively.

TT is in parentheses as I haven't flown them yet but will be doing so in four weeks.

I don't know the IATA code for a few airlines that have long since disappeared: Airtours International (ICAO: AIH), British World Airlines and TAT European Airlines

Notes:

I did use regionals, I think it's fair as it's about operating rather than marketing carrier and I don't really care about how they deal with the commercial relationship between them.

Yes, I fly very frequently and have never flown LH

Yes, I have flown QK but not AC

Interestingly enough my YW flight (Air Nostrum) was actually sold as a charter under a YW only code.

Some glaring gaps here; obviously the memory is getting rusty. Some "Babyflots" are omitted as I cannot reliably confirm which of them I flew and which I just knew about. Just one per letter for now, placeholders so to speak.

Dang -- including regional codes (operating beneath the code share) I've been aboard all the letters except B. Really surprised, especially considering i didn't try to get obscure carriers and have only one non-US carrier. I must be getting old! Some of the regionals I did fly as a kid prior to code-share under their own branding but not all.
