BA and VS on same ticket with good price

Wed Nov 28, 2018 4:28 pm

I've been checking prices in C from WAW to NYC, and I've noticed that in January 2019 I can find 1500 euro flight which has WAW-LHR segment on British Airways metal, and LHR-EWR segment on Virgin Atlantic.
How is that possible ? I thought that BA and VS hated each other - but here it looks like they had to agree on the connection.

result from flights.google, looks like it's bookable

Airlines submit “net fares” that can be sold by agents and they can be coupled with net fares from other airlines that create somewhat offline connections. Come on, they’re both based at LHR, it might be an uneasy relationship but what can you do? In fact I heard that BA is VS’s biggest source of interline feed at LHR, which, when you think about it, is inevitable. Especially cos VS isn’t in an alliance. Who else could it be? Sri Lankan?

An anomalous find worth investigating! Is 1.5 hours at LHR enough time to transfer terminals. I suppose if all is on time. Many "enemies' still maintain interline agreements thus resulting in search result you presented. Only the US3 seem intent on killing off many of those arrangements. But even then I have seen AA/UA combinations that price quite well .

Interesting, thanks!

Also I would prefer not to try 90 minutes connection on LHR with terminal changes. LHR is one of the reasons I switched from OW to *A - changing terminals there sucks.

1.5 hours to land and move through LHR T3, transfer to T5 make your flight and hope your bag accompanies you, that's got a huge risk factor attached. The only good points are that VS has two later departures to JFK that day and BA has four.

Its cheap for a reason, the stress factor involved.

Hell, in some scenarios, you can buy Alaska, American, Delta, and Hawaiian right on United.com.

Flight’s Ok if you are willing to arrive one day late...all depends on your expectations...

This is something like Kiwi.com would offer, they mix and match everything together making use of self-transfers. As long as two airlines use the same airport, they connect them to each other. They don't care about interline agreements or anything like that.

Of course this would mean that you have to collect and re-check your luggage since it still remains a self-transfer. It even says so in their terms. You make one booking with them for the whole trip, but they make seperate bookings for you for each part of the trip. On top of that they charge a service fee which is also an insurance for missed connections, what they charge you is always more than the sum of the flights added up.

Except in this case it isn't. I can find the fare on ITA Matrix and it is a single VS fare that happens to allow BA on the WAW-LHR-WAW legs. So here it isn't a self-transfer.

BA and VS have been providing transfer passengers to each other at LHR for many years as it makes business sense for both.

There's only 90 minutes to transfer from T5 to T3: I don't understand why this availability is shown in the GDS (BA847 --> VS001) as the MCT is 130 minutes.

The BA to VS int-to-int T5 to T3 MCT is 90 minutes (or 1 hour 30 minutes):

But this is a same terminal transfer....
BA’s WAW flight lands at T3.
VS EWR flight leaves T3
Easy connection.

I can assure you that BA's WAW flights are at T5.

Amadeus shows MCT of 130 minutes:

DMBA/LHR5-3/VS/30NOV18
LHR BA TO VS
LHR-LHR FROM - TO D/D D/I I/D I/I
CC FLTN-FLTR ORGN EQPTM-CC FLTN-FLTR DEST EQPTM HMM HMM HMM HMM
BA 5- 3 130 130 130 130
BA 5-VS 3 --- 130 --- 130
CK ALSO STANDARD CONNECTING TIMES

The WAW flight recently moved (28OCT) from T3 to T5.

MCTs are displayed in the GDS as HMM format so 130 is 1:30. A 130 minute MCT would be displayed as 210.

My mistake, so 90 minutes is valid but a tight connection.

I've noticed VS seem keener to use BA on domestic BA connections at Heathrow. I could have sworn they'd been pushing people onto FlyBe but something seems to have changed over the past few weeks. I rarely see a BE/VS result returned, it's always BA.
