International Carriers at USA Airports in 2018

Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:06 pm

Hello all,

I ran across this list and thought it was interesting. This is the top 40 USA airports by traffic ranked by the number of airlines providing international service out of those airports in 2018. Now this is just 2018 data, no announced carriers for 2019. The only requirement is that the airline had to operate 9+ scheduled passenger flights in 2018 at the airport to be counted on this list regardless of its start date, end date, seasonality, foreign flag carrier, United States carrier, frequencies, seats, etc. Just counting each airline once that operates internationally in any form (i.e. for IAD, United is counted a 1 international route operator, Lufthansa is counted as 1, etc). Obviously things are constantly in flux at every airport, but this was done to establish a baseline for comparison. Interesting to see the number of international route operators at each airport!

1st JFK – 76
2nd LAX – 62

9+ flights is an odd threshold. You got me thinking what the minimum should. Obviously it is subjective, but I probably would have guessed at least 52 as that would cover an average of once a week service.

Thanks for the list.

Would LATAM or Avianca count as one carrier or would they be broken up into each group member (Chile/Argentina/Peru/Brazil, etc)?

Also, to the OP, I noticed MDW is not in the list. It's a top 40 airport, and it has international flights. They have 3 carriers flying internationally tying them with DCA and SLC. Agreed that it's a great list.

52 would cut off some carriers as they commenced service to certain airports this year, resulting in less than 52 days of operation

Cool list. I wondered where SNA is thinking it has to be in the top 40. Turns out I was almost correct. SNA and SMF are 41 and 42.

I chose 9 as this would allow some airports to count once a week destinations that only run for a few months during summer (like midwest cities to CUN for example) while excluding random popup flights at major airports.

NZ starts service to ORD tomorrow... it should meet your thresholds by the end of the year to put ORD at 45.

TAP just announced. More international service coming in 2019.

I don't know if there is any significance in this but two of the US3 are based at hubs which are some way down the list, namely DL (ATL) and AA (DFW). Also, DL's other two biggest hubs (DTW and MSP) are way down the list as well. In contrast UA has five in the top eight (LAX, ORD, SFO, IAD and EWR).

Not sure how PIT made this list. It was #49 last year.

NZ was already included. Anything that had published schedules for more the 9 operations between Jan 1st 2018 and December 31st 2018 was included.

I didn't get into future announced flights as half the airports on this list have new carriers coming in 2019 and that is too confusing to figure out at this point

SJC is down to 8 now, possibly 7. LH and CA discontinued. AM is dropping GDL also but not sure if they plan to keep the seasonal MEX flight.

Which is why DL has such great pricing power at their hubs both domestically and internationally. Limited competition.
Considering they own 49% of VS and are partners with KE, that is two "competitors" at ATL that really are aren't.

Its not just VS and KE

of the 13(soon 14) carriers that fly international to ATL, Delta operates a JV with 5(soon 6) of them (AM, AF, KL, KE, VS and soon WS) That leaves AC, BA, LH, QR, WN and TK

I'm not sure who the 13th carrier is unless its 9E (who operates for DCI)? I'm not sure WG has enough flights to count.

I pulled the full-year 2017 stats from the T100's for all US airports with departures logged for foreign-based carriers I went with carriers with at least 9+ departures as well -- it's not a perfect threshold but it does represent roughly at least weekly service during a "season". A few other notes:

--Only passenger airlines
--Only foreign-registered airlines
--All reported operations included, and that means scheduled airlines and reported charter flights (no matter how large or small the aircraft). Just has to be at least 9 or more by a single carrier in 2017.
--Operating carriers noted, not brand. So if AC and Air Georgian sold as AC* each had at least 9 departures at a city, that counted as 2 in spite of both being sold as "Air Canada"

Here's the list for all US airports with at least 1 foreign carrier with 9 or more departures. Also listed are many medium-larger airports with no foreign carriers with 9+ departures in 2017.

Did you read? He’s including the top 40 airports in the US by number of passengers. DAL is in the top 40.

The new list makes more sense. Very interesting how many foreign carriers that ORD does have and that FLL has more foreign carriers than DFW, IAH, ATL...etc
