NEO vs CEO & MAX vs NG impressions

Mon Dec 03, 2018 5:56 pm

I'm wondering what people think regarding flying the a32x NEOs vs the CEOs and 737 MAX vs NGs from a passenger (or pilot?) perspective.

I've finally had a chance to ride on both the A320neo and 737 MAX 8. My Impressions:

    - The NEO was much quieter than the CEO as a passenger. I really enjoyed the experience and didn't previously realize how pleasant a quieter ride can be
    - The 737 MAX 8 was almost indistinguishable from a newer NG plane. If I didn't know beforehand, I would assume I was just riding an NG with Sky Interior

I now find myself much more eager to fly on the NEOs vs the MAXs, given the option.

(PS I'm really not an Airbus fanboy -- if anything I usually lean the other direction)

Other than looking out the window, I didn't notice a difference on either. I was a half hour into my first flight on a MAX before I looked out the window and realized it was a MAX (gate had been arranged such that there was no view of the plane before boarding).

Flown in the MAX. Noticeable difference in cabin noise over the NG. The MAX is a very nice ride. Also I much prefer the Sky Interior. Not going to book either way though since the two are virtually equals.

Yet to fly the NEO, but I have one booked in February.

I've flown on the A321NEO. Only noticeable difference from the A321CEO is the exit door configuration (2 overwing exits instead of door 2) and A321NEO painted near the entry door.

A32x CEO has CFM, IAE, and PW engines. A32x NEO has CFM and PW engines. Which engines are you comparing?

Interesting question. I rode the F9 A320neo, so we're talking CFM in that case. On the CEO, I'm fairly certain I've ridden on all 3, but I couldn't tell you which is louder than the other. What thoughts do you have re: engines + noise in this case?

I’ve flown on both, the A321neo (VX/CFM LEAP-1A) and A320neo (F9/CFM LEAP-1A, NK/PW1100G)and I can definitely say that the NEO is far quieter than the previous generation of aircraft engines. They’re noticeably quieter and they make flights on ULCCs such as Spirit and Frontier much more enjoyable. You can definitely tell the noise difference going from a NEO to a CEO.

However, as quiet as these newer engines are, I still stand firm in my belief in that the quietest aircraft seat I’ve ever been in has been seat 8A on the American Airlines MD-80. The seat is before the wings and you can’t hear anything but the air rushing past your window.
