US Airports With Ramp Boarding and/or Bus Gates?

Sat Dec 15, 2018 12:33 am

It's still somewhat common in Europe, but are there many airports left in the US which board planes without the use of jetways, even in isolated examples? This can be any combination of walking directly from the terminal outside to the plane or being bussed to remote stands and boarding airstairs/switchback ramps.

I can think of some E gates at CLT, B9A at BOS, and the terminals at PIE and UST being examples of the former, but am struggling to think of examples of remote stands and buses, especially with mainline-sized airplanes. Can anybody else think of more examples of either?

Not mainline fleet but both Denver and Newark board some United EMB145/175s directly from the tarmac

Parts of Concourse F at PHL do not have jet bridges. Direct boarding onto the ramp.

Gates 35B-O at DCA require you to be bussed to the aircraft in order to board.

PDX Concourse A has 12 gates, all ramps, for Q400s and E175s, but it will be torn down soon.
Major airports with no PDX nonstops: MIA, FLL, TPA, IND, MSY, CLE, CVG, PIT, RDU

BOS has ground boarding from the E gates too for Porter and Silver
Someone noted LGB which has the double ability of not only no jetbridge option, but also rear stair boarding too
That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

I couldn't remember if F at PHL had ramp boarding or not, as it's been a few years since I've been there, but I now do remember an entire section with Dash 8s last time I was there.

I also blanked on 35X.

I don't know the details behind the other airports, but SeaTac is particularly noteworthy in this regards because they just opened a new annex to Concourse D specifically ADDING bus gates for boarding at hardstands.

The rapid growth at SeaTac in recent years has meant that, instead of moving away from hardstand operations, they have had to return to hardstand operations being a normal process.

MIA boards E175s from the ramp with stairs or a ramp, as well as many of the ski resort airports in Colorado.

At least when I was there in February, SFO had a few gates (gate 84 for sure, and possibly a couple of others) where the jetway gets you down onto the ramp where you then join the appropriate line for your flight and board from the ramp.

There's also EYW, of course.

I boarded a DL flight to DTW where we boarded from the tarmac. I got to experience that, and I got to see the tunnel at DTW as we connected to our 738 to Seattle. I guess the considerable downgauge from the A319 to the CRJ wasn't all too bad...

Every time I've connected at LGA the last several years I've had to ride a bus to a remote stand to board a CRJ.

Not currently in use but the gates at the far end of the D pier at BWI were built for PI Express (then US Express)....

LGA gates c12/13/14 are bus gates to the blast fence on the far side of Concourse D. Based of the construction at LGA, those gates have less than 2 years until there is a jet bridge.

I believe that Allegiant used a ramp when they were at BTV. There is still a ramp (maybe the same one?) sitting around that is branded for United, but I have never seen it in use.

Pretty sure SAF has no jetbridges, same with DIK, ISN and CYS. Sure they are all small.

Adding to my own discussion, MCO has gates for Silver. I think they used to use 36 and have since moved to 13.

The "new" terminal at BFL from 2005 (hard to believe now how long that has been around!) has jetbridges as well as one outdoor walk-to-your-EMB-125-to-LAX gate. I don't know if this is still in use anymore, as there are no longer flights to LAX, but the terminal was built to offer this as an option for airlines.

This might be the last all-new airport terminal building built with this concept in mind.

PSC (Pasco/Kennewick) - 4 ramp boarding gates (AS, UA, Allegiant, and DL). Gate 4 is a jetway to support larger aircraft (E175, 737, A320)

IAH, Gate A3. I believe usually used by UA's ERJ-145s. There used to be one at Terminal B IIRC when they were doing the reconstruction of the southern section.

BUR and LGB are probably the largest airports in US I can think of without any jetways whatsoever.

Gates A1-A6 at IAD are all ramp boarding gates - used by United Express. And enjoy Gate 35X at DCA while you can - the new replacement concourse is set to open in 2021.

At LAX, AA will occasionally park at remote stands, deplane you via stairs, and bus you to the AA terminal. I did this on a domestic 787 from ORD last year.

Also the AA regional terminal is effectively ramp boarding for their E-Jets

LAX uses remote stands regularly for international widebodies as TBIT doesn't have enough gates, especially during the midnight rush and afternoon arrival bank.

I mean, if you want to get technical, the last time I flew out of JFK I had to board an A380 via the tarmac/stairs.

Surprised it took this long to mention JFK, which definitely has designated remote stands. You can even see some of them in use on Google Maps. For example: https://goo.gl/maps/zPgnbHeU5Qq

They seem to be "overflow" in most or all case, not preferred, but they are used every day by multiple airlines.

G4 uses a ramp at XNA, despite there being unoccupied/unbranded gates with bridges readily available. I've heard mixed messages if this is a normal occurrence for G4 though...so I apologize in advance if this their M.O. for their smaller stations.

Kinda sorta. Technically you get bussed to these, but there's that little micro terminal they take you to, then you board via jetway. It's a little different from the countless int'l airports where you get bussed directly to the plane and you walk up a stair car from the tarmac.

I like the all-757 pic. Those were de days. Always get nostalgic seeing 757s at the four Hs; hot, high, Hawaiian, and s(h)ort-runway airports (just made that phrase up), not that I ever really flew such routes on such a plane.

I de-boarded Durango, CO by airstair, no surprise since it's a tiny, seasonal airport.

Gate 24 at BUF (used by DL as an overflow gate for their regional flights) is a ramp boarding/deplaning gate.

HVN is only served by AA (previously on Dash 8s, now on the CR2) and uses the ground boarding gates. There is an upper level jet bridge, which I think was an overly ambitious bit of construction.
