Your 2019 route suggestions by airline

Sat Dec 22, 2018 12:57 pm

Just like last year (link) and the year before I'm sure we all got some suggestions for our favourite airlines on what routes they'll be successful.

Request as you please, but try to keep it realistic. Routes should be attached to at least one hub for the airline and flyable with the aircraft they got.

It would be good to know over the years, if any, which suggested routes have been launched (and then axed maybe)...

LH: MUC-SAN, A350, x2 at least (on the days our FRA flight isn't operating).
Edelweiss: ZRH-SAN, year-round (I can dream, can't I?)
KLM: AMS-SAN, 787 (come on, SkyTeam, you're the only one missing!)
COPA: PTY-SAN, 738 (we can work with the airport to get you the times you want!)
KE: ICN-SAN, 787 or A350

My previous wish of BFL-DFW came true, but we'll see how long it lasts.

I hate to say it, but outside of SAN, I really can't think of anything...how selfish of me!

EIN - LHR/FRA/MUC with BA or LH respectively. Just one would be fine. It's a wealthy region with quite a bit of demand. Ryanair flights to Manchester are regularly £200+ even looking quite a bit ahead. Would catch southern Netherlands, bit of Belgium and a bit of DE.

That's true, and Ryanair has a monopoly on flights between Eindhoven and the UK. There sure could be a bit more competition here, that's why I suggested Wizzair to start Luton - Eindhoven. Of course any other airline would be welcome too.

Monpoly element is important but also about opening up through tickets to the rest of the world. Point to point traffic should be liberalised to reduce prices and then better routes to connect long haul.

For FI, I’d like to see any routes further into Europe that connect to the main connecting banks (so not a 1x weekly BCN, MAD and MXP outside peak times). It could be either changes to the schedule of those flights or new destinations like FCO and LIS.

On the US side, I’ve wanted to see KEF-AUS for a long time because I feel Austin fits the profile of smaller markets FI has been very successful in adding in recent years. However, I unfortunately think most FI adds next year will be beefing up routes already in the system - which, don’t get me wrong, is probably the sensible thing to do but also the boring one! ;)

SY: PDX-BNA, MSP-SLC, MSP-IAD
LH: MSP-MUC/FRA (either one works)
DL: HRL-ATL (add some summer service for connections to the east coast/Europe)
F9: DEN-ANC (I am sure there is a market for an ULCC on a DEN-ANC routing)
AS: MSP-ANC (AS serves all top 10 from ANC besides MSP, there is room there)

British Airways at London Heathrow (LHR):
Short Haul - Eindhoven, Ankara, Calvi (Summer Seasonal), Chambery (Winter Seasonal), Lleida (Winter Seasonal), Turin (Winter Seasonal), Bern (Winter Seasonal)
Long Haul (more likely to start in W19)- Brasilia, Lima, Dammam

There's an entire thread on the very low flight prices from BCN and MAD due to LCC pressure. Not sure why FI should touch that

While I agree with the current situation at BCN, FI does already operate to MAD. It is however currently operated outside of the hub bank times, so re-timing that flight would just allow them to sell connections as well.

If there has been no effort to change it then I'm sure they know what they're doing. IAG, Norwegian, TAP, UX I'm sure have it sewn up. FI would add little to the party.

There has never been an opportunity to change it as the old bank system only allowed for a maximum of 3,5 hour flights from KEF in order to catch the connections to N-America. Changing the bank system starting next summer to accomodate longer flights is indeed an effort to change flights like MAD, MXP and potential new destinations further into Europe.

CZ
CAN-ORD
CAN-YUL
SHE-DXB
(Above needs bilateral agreement exemption)
CAN-CMN
CAN-CRK
CAN-OOL
CAN-CBR-WEL
CAN-FRA(CSX stop eliminated)
CAN-DAR
CAN-JNB
CAN-LOS
CAN-LAD
CAN-DRW
CAN-OVB
CAN-LED
CAN-NAN
URC-IST/L
URC-CDG(in 321N)
Etc.

Additional coverage of Oceania and Africa is needed to keep ahead of CX. European nodes are already over served by CX&HU, so fewer are listed.
Also, URC-LHR (for example) is only as long as JFK-DSS (served in 752), which means URC can cover large parts of Europe using A321neo.
Disclaimer, listing routes doesn’t mean flying them all.

MU
PVG-PER
PVG-KBP
PVG-OVB
PVG-VVO
PVG-OSL
PVG-KHV
PVG-WAW
PVG-NBO

What MU lacks is the coverage of E. Europe and W. Australia. An completely unserved Africa is unrealistic, either.

BA flies LHR - BAH, pax can easily enter DMM, via BAH.

ALL airlines:
Fly to Phoenix so I can spot your aircraft...even Rex with their tiny planes from Essendon...

Also to my beloved, native airport of SJU.

Seriously, however:
Avianca to Phoenix from Guatemala or El Salvador...perhaps Copa from PtY carrying over people from nearby countries as well.

A link from SJU to southern South America is needed, and Ponce airport in Puerto Rico's south (which has JetBlue) can use United, American or Delta as well, seasonally. Ponce just needs growth period.

Last but not least, Aguadilla and Mayaguez should get SDQ service.

LO: WAW-DUB - probably with the E-jets. EI used to fly the route, but cancelled it a year or two ago. Currently only FR fly WMI-DUB, only 6 weekly, 5 days a week, and WMI is crowded and difficult to get to. I remember when EI, FR, and Norwegian all operated WAW-DUB.
Unlikely, but maybe UA EWR-WAW with a 767? They are both star alliance hubs.

Have probably said it every year for the past few years, but wish DL would bring back XNA-SLC. Loads more traffic than when they tried it ~10 years ago. Hoping they will once the airport reconstruction is winding down. To give them some credit, MSP times have gotten much better for XNA than they have been in previous years, but still not as convenient as SLC could be for west-coast connections.
Next up: XNA-ATL-PWM-ATL-XNA
