Longest & shortest routes in airline networks

Tue Jan 01, 2019 6:41 pm

Can we come up with the longest and shortest served route within each airline's network?
For better comparability I would suggest the gc distance as a measurement rather than the flight time.

LH
Shortest: FRA-STR 157km
Longest: FRA-EZE 11,479km

UA
longest is: SFO-SIN 13,593km
shortest is a good question....probably ORD-MKE* on mainline at 108km

*I think they still fly this with mainline equipment part of the year. If that's stopped SFO-SMF might be the next shortest at 138km.

Flying is not inherently dangerous but it is very unforgiving in case of carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

Unless it has changed...

WN
Shortest: AUS-HOU
Longest: EWR-OAK

I never really think of Southwest when I think transcons; if Midway or some airport of similar size existed on the East or Weat coast, things might be different.

The longest easyJet is just 2105 nmi (great circle) LGW- HRG

But the shortest is an impressive 66nmi (not so great circle) BFS-IOM

Very short for an A320.

Loganair of course has WRY - PPW. An incredible 2 nmi.

May I suggest that nmi is used as the measurement in this thread. That would suit most pilots and industry people.

Without the flights it would be 4hour ferry ride, then around an hour on windy roads to BHE from where the ferry docks.

It’s an pretty popular route operating around 5x daily.

It's actually the fairly recent LFW-LAX. It's longer than ORD->ADD also. Even ADD-GRU is longer than ADD-ICN anyway.

(On a side note, it's funny that neither the shortest nor the longest ET flights involve ADD)

No idea which flight is shortest on AC "mainline", though.

IB

Shortest: MAD-BIO 171nm/317kms, closely followed by MAD-SDR 176nm/327kms
Longest: MAD-NRT: 5828nm/10794kms. Soon to be overpassed by LEVEL (operated by IB) BCN-SCL 6011nm/11132kms

BCN-SCL flown by an A330 will be probably among the longest routes operated by this AC.

BA's shortest non stop route is ANU-SKB (I don't think there are any shorter bookable routes within the carribean) which is 65 miles and the longest LHR-SCL which is 7240. The longest route overall is LHR-SIN-SYD which is 10670.

The ACC-ABJ sector of JNB-ACC-ABJ is technically shorter (418km). Not sure if SA has traffic right on that or not, though.

The shortest non-mainline SA flight I can find is JNB-PTG (281km), on Airlink ERJ. There maybe something shorter, though.

I'm not sure what's the shortest flight for AA, but I know DFW-OKC/AUS are probably some of the shortest, but I feel like there might be some 100nm hop I'm not aware of.

Longest: DFW-HKG 7046 nm.

Surprising how the longest two flights in the world were forgotten so far.
SQ: Shortest: SIN-KUL and longest: SIN-EWR.
QR: DOH-OHS (Sohar, Oman) and DOH-AKL. Back in the day DOH-BAH was the shortest, followed by DOH-AUH, DWC, DXB, SHJ and RKT in that order.

CLT-GSO (Single A319 daily + a bunch of RJs) at 72nmi would be the shortest AA (mainline) flight. After that there's also PHX-TUS (96nmi, again, only 1 single A319 alongside a bunch of RJs).

For route with larger amount of mainline flight, CLT-RDU (113nmi) is shorter than DFW-OKC (152nmi) and DFW-AUS (165nmi).

Of course, if you count regional also, there are many even shorter routes. I believe shortest is ORD-MKE (58nmi) follow by CLT-GSP (65nmi). From DFW the shortest would be DFW-ACT (78nmi).

CLT-GSP(75Miles) is shorter than CLT-GSO (83Mile).
AA operates CRJs on this route (8 to 10 of them in each direction everyday)
