Favorite retired aircraft

Mon Jan 07, 2019 2:00 am

For us middle age or older people on here, what is or are your favorite retired aircraft? For me it is definitely the 727. I've only flown on it a few times, but I miss seeing it, and flying in it. Although I've only flown on it as a little kid, I really liked the sight and sound of the 707.

One last thing, I didn't put it in the header but when I was stationed in Germany, I would take Pan Am on my leaves back to the states. Loved the airline and the 747-200 that I always flew on a acrossed the Atlantic.

For me, it's the 727 and the L-1011. I miss the beauty of these two tri jets. My favorite propliner is the Constellation.

I'm in my mid 20's but I miss the 737-200/3/4/5. I've spent a lot of time with them and those will always be special. Never got to fly on a 727. We're about to close the curtains on MD80's and JT8D powered aircraft all together.

There are many 727's and 737 classics still flying, thread should specify "retired aircraft in the US and Europe"

Maybe we could go with airline/aircraft combinations? I was a big fan of WN's 733s- can't count how many times I flew on those growing up. It seemed that the WN 733 would take me wherever I went- I remember getting on a freshly painted -700 back in 2003 and being utterly surprised that I didn't end up on another -300. I particularly enjoyed the all analog flight deck that WN had on their 733s/735s; it's pretty wild to think that WN operated analog airplanes from their founding in 1971 all the way to the retirement of the last 733 in 2017. The role of the 733 in WN's history is pretty huge too, as their first airplane with the legs to help them expand beyond the range of the -200.

My last flight on one was in 2016 on N697SW - better known as the TACA aircraft that landed on the levee in New Orleans. Rather comfortable with a 137 seat cabin, and I was thrilled to catch an airplane that I'd seen on TV!
