Aircraft With The Most Intense Engine Start Up

Mon Jan 07, 2019 9:46 pm

Greetings everyone! I would like to hear your opinion on the loudest, most intense engine start ups on any aircraft you flown. I only have flown on the Boeing 737-700 and -800 variants on Southwest in person and it gets pretty loud when those CFM56-7Bs come to life. But in my personal opinion, the 777s equipped with the GE90 engines are absolutely insane!

What about the CSeries? Or is the howl just during taxi?

The most intense one that I’ve experienced is indeed the 777’s GE90. However I also quite like the GE equipped 787s. GE seems to be good on that :D While it’s not intense, it just has this deep sound which I like. It’s not so much on the RR equipped ones IMO.

I haven't heard the A220 start up on the inside yet, but its real interesting how the PW1500G starts up.

(It actually happens at around the 2:12 mark, but I started at the beginning of the spoolup.)

Radial engines tend to be a lot more interesting on start up.

Sitting in the back of an MD-80 during start is a pretty neat experience; the starter engages and the sound progresses from a low rumble and increases in pitch several octaves until it reaches a steady howl that sounds characteristically low bypass and (IMO) exceptionally more interesting then most types today.

I'm with Bohica on the RB211 but my perspective is more from the ramp-side, not from on-board. They also seemed to smell 'richer' than other engines as there was always a strong smell of jetfuel whenever these started up.

Deep sound as in this? Because it sure does have a really intense growl and rumble to it. I can imagine how much the cabin is shaking from those GEnx engines coming to life! Looks like the GE90 and GEnx are closely matched!

Has a nice rumble to it! I love the high pitched whine that is faintly present in the cabin.

It seems the ATR 42/72 is also pretty intense. No personal experience, I've never flown an ATR. However for such a small plane they make a lot of noise, more than an average jet.

The F-16 had a rather intense start-up, only got to sit in the back seat during an engine test (never as a passenger in flight *tears*).

The GE90 engine start can and Has been modified with the new fuel nozzle scheduling. It's not near as bad as the RR used to be. The first time I saw that thing start?
It scared to fool out of me and that was modified to start more smoothly as well. It .was all fuel scheduling..

777 with GE90 certainly the loudest I’ve experienced.

A32N with the CFM LEAP-1A
F-15C/D with the P&W F100

The IL-86 was the best sounding engine start up I've heard. I videoed one in SIN once, couldn't see the plane, but did it just to get the engine start up noise, it was worth it.

The 4360 is smokier and more impressive and sounds better on the start and idle, but it doesn't pop and snort the same; any radial with collectors doesn't nearly so much. Put short stacks on them, however, it 's like a symphony of 12 gauge shotguns out of sync with one another. The R2600 on the B25, for example.

A little too much throttle during the start and it's got some noise to it, and possibly a carburetor backfire (and subsequent fire).

I'd have to say the 77W. I used to live a stones-throw away from IST, and when the winds were blowing the right way I could hear the GE90's start up from the lounge room. It was the only sounds we'd hear from the airport and it was absolute music to my ears!

Right !? When I was young my father purchased a bigscreen TV with a total surround sound speaker system. I'm talking, boomin' !! Well, he also got a Laserdisk (if that dates any of this) called Earthlight, which was basically just videos of earth from space, set to relaxing music. The very first clip is of a shuttle launch, and I swear, for not being able to reproduce the sound & experience of being there live, it certainly came close. ;)

Well, I've designed and built some speaker systems capable of shaking your bones when listening to good heavy metal. But that feeling didn't even come close to the one at launch. Granted, I never really listened to a good quality recording of a space shuttle launch. Nonetheless, the real stuff is the real stuff and I'm happy that I made it to one. It won't happen again but I'm already thinking about the Falcon Heavy.

Absolutely agree with this...When I was working as a line mechanic in EWR in the 80's I could "hear" TWA start their L1011 even when I couldn't see it and if it was winter time and cold it would be surrounded with a big cloud of white smoke. Of all the airplanes I have been around in the 30+ years I have been in the industry I have to say the L1011 was the most distinct in that regard.

The 1500G on the A220 howls at startup and as it comes off idle. It’s quite cool and sounds awesome inside.
I was talking with a DL A220 Captain at LGA last Thursday (on the DL inaugural day) and he said he loves the sound so much that he’ll purposefully bring it off idle more than necessary during taxi.

Yak-40 must be up there, especially if you keep in mind that it's a really small plane.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIvHAYioipg

What you don't see in this video, and what I got to experience a lot: after engine start, but prior to taxi, the engines are run at high thrust (take-off?) for some time. The noise was incredible. People "in the industry" used to joke that this "engine test", prior to taxiing, had a fuel bill equaling the one for the flight itself. No idea if they were just kidding/ exaggerating, or it was indeed nearly as bad.
